It usually occurs alongside an upper respiratory infection or after irritation, trauma, or a growth in the larynx. The signs that matter most are a changed voice with a harsh cough, and above all, noisy or difficult breathing. Swelling in the larynx can narrow the airway quickly, so any cat with labored or open-mouth breathing needs a veterinarian the same day, not a home remedy.
What laryngitis is in cats
The larynx sits between the back of the throat and the trachea. It controls airflow into the lungs and produces the sound of a meow, so inflammation there changes both breathing and voice. Veterinary references describe feline laryngitis as inflammation of this structure, and the central concern is swelling (edema). Mild swelling may only make the voice hoarse. Severe swelling can physically block the airway.
Laryngitis is better understood as a sign of a laryngeal problem than as a diagnosis on its own. Cornell University’s veterinary guidance places the larynx within the upper respiratory tract, which is why many cases are linked to the same infections that cause sneezing and runny eyes.
Common causes
Merck Veterinary Manual’s feline laryngeal disorders guidance (last updated September 2024) lists the following potential causes:

- Upper respiratory tract infection. Laryngitis may accompany feline infectious rhinotracheitis and feline calicivirus infection.
- Inhaled irritants. Dust, smoke, or irritating gases can inflame the lining of the larynx.
- Foreign objects. Something lodged in or near the larynx can provoke swelling.
- Trauma. Injury to the throat or neck area can damage laryngeal tissue.
- Excessive vocalization. Prolonged or repeated yowling can strain the voice box.
- Laryngeal tumors. A mass in the larynx can cause persistent inflammation and voice change.
Respiratory infection is the cause most owners will encounter first. Cornell’s guidance on feline respiratory infections describes nasal or eye discharge, sneezing, cough, conjunctivitis, mouth ulcers, lethargy, and reduced appetite as typical signs of upper respiratory infection. Those signs suggest a respiratory illness, but they do not on their own show that the larynx is inflamed. Only an examination can establish that.
Symptoms and when they are an emergency
Merck lists the following signs in cats with laryngeal disease:
- A harsh, dry, short cough that may later become softer and moist
- A changed or weakened meow
- Painful or difficult swallowing
- Bad breath
- Noisy or difficult breathing
Breathing signs are the ones that change the plan. A cat with laryngeal swelling may hold its head low and breathe with its mouth open. Swelling can develop within hours, and severe obstruction can lead to suffocation. Stress or exertion, such as a carrier trip or a chase, makes the risk worse.

Sort the signs by urgency
| What you see | What it may indicate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Hoarse meow with a dry, short cough, eating normally, breathing quietly | Possible early laryngeal inflammation or upper respiratory infection | Book a veterinary appointment promptly and report the change in voice |
| Painful or difficult swallowing, bad breath, reduced appetite | Inflammation causing discomfort, or a mouth or throat problem | Arrange veterinary examination soon; do not wait for the signs to pass on their own |
| Noisy breathing, open-mouth breathing, head held low, or labored breathing | Possible airway obstruction from swelling | Seek emergency veterinary care immediately |
Owners should not try to decide which row applies by waiting. Breathing that worsens over hours is a reason to move directly to emergency care.

How veterinarians diagnose it
A veterinarian may form a tentative diagnosis from the cat’s history, the signs, and a physical examination. A definitive diagnosis requires looking at the larynx with an endoscope, a procedure called laryngoscopy. In cats this generally requires anesthesia, which is why it is usually scheduled after the airway has been stabilized if needed.
A changed meow is not proof of laryngitis. Similar signs can arise from other laryngeal or pharyngeal (throat) conditions, so the examination is what separates one cause from another.

Veterinary treatment
Treatment depends on the underlying cause and on how much the airway is compromised. Merck’s guidance describes the following options, all to be prescribed and managed by a veterinarian:
Corticosteroids
Corticosteroids are used to reduce inflammatory swelling in the larynx.
Diuretics
Diuretics may be used when fluid has built up in the tissues.

Owners should not give human medicines or leftover prescriptions to a cat with a sore throat. Dosing errors and drug interactions are a real risk in cats, and some common medications are toxic to them.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Home support: what helps and what does not
Merck lists three supportive measures that owners can provide while a cat is under veterinary care:
- Humidified air. Moist air may ease irritation of the airway. A room humidifier is one option, but no particular type or model has been shown to work for feline laryngitis.
- Soft food. Softer food is easier to swallow when the throat is painful.
- A clean, quiet resting area. Reducing stress and dust helps the cat rest.
None of these resolves an obstructed airway, and none replaces diagnosis or prescribed treatment. If a cat with a hoarse voice is also breathing noisily or with its mouth open, skip the home measures and go to a veterinarian.
What is and is not established
Standard veterinary references describe the causes, signs, diagnostic approach, and treatment categories for feline laryngitis in consistent terms. They do not publish reliable incidence, prevalence, or recovery-time figures for cats, so this article does not quote any. The Cat Fanciers’ Association’s June 4, 2026 article on laryngitis in cats repeats the Merck framework for owners, but it is a secondary source and does not add clinical evidence.
