Veterinary interest today centers on the microbiota-gut-brain axis, the proposal that gastrointestinal microbes can shape cognition, mood, and behavior. A September 2026 editor’s letter by Simon R. Platt, BVM&S, FRCVS, DACVIM (Neurology), DECVN, in Today’s Veterinary Practice introduces that idea with historical context and calls the microbiome a promising therapeutic target. It is an editorial, not a clinical guideline. It offers no treatment protocols, outcome data, or statistics, so it supports interest in the topic rather than any specific treatment for a pet.
What the proposed mechanism says
The premise is that bacteria living in the gut produce chemicals that can affect the nervous system. The editorial names three groups of these neuroactive substances:
- Neurotransmitters, chemical messengers that nerve cells use to signal one another.
- Short-chain fatty acids, compounds produced when gut bacteria ferment dietary fiber.
- Amino acids, the building blocks of proteins, some of which serve as precursors to signaling chemicals.
Within this model, changes in the gut microbial community could in principle influence mental, cognitive, and behavioral processes. That is a plausible biological hypothesis. The editorial does not show which bacteria, which substances, or which pets are affected, and it does not measure any behavior.
The historical thread behind the idea
Platt’s letter traces the concept back through several phases. The details below are the author’s account of history, not independently verified consensus, and specialist historical sources should be consulted before they are repeated as established fact.

- Early fecal transplantation. The letter links transferring intestinal contents to historical antecedents in traditional Chinese medicine during the Dong Jin dynasty and in Ancient Greece.
- Autointoxication theories in the 19th century. Physicians of that era proposed that gut bacteria released toxins that were absorbed and could poison the central nervous system.
- A 20th-century reversal. Some functional gastrointestinal disturbances came to be associated with psychological distress rather than with toxins from the gut.
The modern interest comes from molecular techniques that allow researchers to characterize gut microbial communities far more precisely than earlier methods could. The letter presents continuity between old and new ideas as a source of renewed interest. It does not argue that this history proves any treatment works.
What is established, what is proposed, and what is not shown
The table separates the claims in the editorial by how much support the letter itself provides.

| Claim | How the editorial treats it | What it does not show |
|---|---|---|
| Gut microbes produce neuroactive substances | Presented as part of the axis’s proposed mechanism | Which substances change behavior in dogs or cats, and at what levels |
| Gut-brain interactions can influence mental, cognitive, and behavioral processes | Stated as the central premise | Any measured behavioral or neurologic outcome in a named study |
| The microbiome is a promising therapeutic target | Described as promising | Clinical efficacy, dosing, or safety of any intervention |
| Fecal transplantation has historical antecedents | Part of the editorial’s historical sketch | That the procedure works for any current veterinary condition |
| Some functional GI disturbances were linked to psychological distress in the 20th century | Historical account in the letter | The direction or strength of that link in pets |
What this means if your pet has a digestive or behavior problem
The editorial is useful as background, but it does not change how a pet with symptoms should be assessed. Practical steps follow.
- Do not start a probiotic, supplement, or diet change for behavior based on this article. The letter names no product as useful, and it reports no outcome data for any supplement.
- Report persistent signs to your veterinarian. Ongoing vomiting, diarrhea, weight change, anxiety, or new neurologic signs have many possible causes, and a gut-related explanation should be tested for rather than assumed.
- Treat fecal microbiota transplantation as a clinical procedure. It is performed under veterinary supervision, not at home, and the editorial does not establish that it is effective for any particular pet condition.
- Ask specific questions. Useful ones include: What evidence supports this approach for my pet’s condition? Is it a studied treatment or an experimental one? What are the known risks? What would tell us it is not working?
Where to find the clinical evidence
The same issue of Today’s Veterinary Practice (volume 16, issue 5, September/October 2026) contains a separate clinical review titled “Role of the Microbiota-Gut-Brain Axis in Behavioral and Neurologic Disorders.” It is written for veterinary professionals, and it is the appropriate place to look for the clinical side of the topic. Editor’s letters like this one introduce a subject; they do not summarize it.

Open questions for pet owners and clinicians
- Which gut bacteria, if any, matter for specific behavioral or neurologic conditions in dogs and cats.
- Whether changes in gut microbes cause behavior changes, follow them, or both.
- Whether any microbiome-targeted intervention is safe and effective over the long term for pets.
Until those questions are answered in controlled clinical work, the microbiota-gut-brain axis is best understood as a promising area of study with an old pedigree, not a settled explanation for any individual pet’s symptoms.
