Cats can change their behavior after another cat or companion animal dies, but current evidence does not show that cats understand death as a permanent state. The changes people report are real enough to watch for, yet they are nonspecific. They can reflect grief-like distress, a disrupted household, the caregiver’s own sadness, or an illness that needs treatment. Keep routines steady, ask a veterinarian about any change that persists, and treat a cat that stops eating as urgent.

Do cats know that another cat has died?

No study has established that cats grasp that a death is final. Cats Protection states that there is no evidence establishing whether cats know another cat is dying. What can be observed is behavior: whether a cat’s habits shift from its own baseline after a companion is gone. That is the question this article can answer with some confidence. Whether the cat’s inner experience resembles human grief is a question the current evidence cannot settle.

What the studies show

Two studies are most often cited. Both rely on what caregivers observed or reported, which limits what they can prove.

2016 owner survey (Walker et al.)

Walker and colleagues published a preliminary questionnaire study in Applied Animal Behaviour Science titled “Owners’ Perceptions of Their Animal’s Behavioural Response to the Loss of an Animal Companion” (2016). It gathered 279 viable surveys covering 159 dogs and 152 cats. Owners reported the following changes in the cats:

Reported change in surviving cats Share of cats (owner report, Walker et al., 2016)
Increased affectionate behavior 78%
Territorial behavior 63%
Increased frequency of vocalization 43%

These figures describe what owners perceived in a preliminary survey. They are not direct measures of feline cognition, and the study cannot prove that bereavement caused every change it recorded. They also should not be read as the share of all cats that react this way.

2024 caregiver survey (Greene and Vonk)

Greene and Vonk surveyed 412 cat caregivers about 452 surviving cats. Their paper, “Is companion animal loss cat-astrophic? Responses of domestic cats to the loss of another companion animal,” appeared in Applied Animal Behaviour Science volume 277 (2024), article 106355, published online 15 July 2024. Caregivers reported reduced eating and playing, along with increased attention seeking, hiding, time spent alone, vocalization, and apparent searching. The reported patterns varied with the relationship between the animals and how much time they had spent together.

The authors state that caregiver projection or reporting bias may contribute to these results. They call for further work to determine whether the patterns reflect the cats’ own grief.

What this adds up to

  • Some cats show grief-like behavioral changes after a companion’s death.
  • The evidence does not demonstrate human-equivalent grief, an understanding that death is final, or a single predictable grieving process.
  • Some cats show no outward change at all, so an apparently unaffected cat is not necessarily a problem.

Signs to watch for

None of these signs is specific to grief. Each one can also come from a change in household routine, from the people in the home being upset, or from illness. A sign on this list is a reason to look more closely, not a diagnosis.

Rule out a medical cause first

Because the same signs can have a medical cause, check health before attributing a change to grief.

  • Persistent changes need an exam. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine advises a veterinary examination for behavior changes that continue, and does not recommend assuming they are grief-related.
  • Track litter-box habits. Changes in urination or defecation are worth reporting to the veterinarian alongside appetite and activity changes.

Keeping your remaining cat steady

Where the cat is healthy, the most practical support is predictability and gentle attention:

  1. Keep feeding times, bowls, play sessions, and sleeping spots as close to their previous pattern as you can.
  2. Offer activities the cat already enjoys, such as a favorite toy or a familiar game, at its own pace.
  3. Give calm reassurance without forcing contact. Let the cat choose when to approach.
  4. Note any change in eating, drinking, litter use, or behavior, and the date it started, so you can describe it accurately to a veterinarian.

Should you get another cat?

Avoid adopting a new pet as a quick fix. Cats Protection notes that cats do not need a companion to be happy. It advises considering the individual cat’s needs and allowing time for adjustment before making a decision. A new arrival introduces its own change to the household, which may be harder on a cat that is already unsettled.

Should the cat see the body?

Cats Protection states that there are no studies showing that seeing a deceased companion helps a cat’s grieving process. Letting the cat see the body is an optional choice, not an evidence-based requirement. The decision depends on two practical factors and one unpredictable one.

Choice Evidence for benefit Practical points
Allow viewing None established. No study shows it helps the grieving process (Cats Protection). Only reasonable if the cause of death poses no infection risk and the caregiver is comfortable. The body may smell different, which can prompt an unexpected reaction.
Do not allow viewing Not applicable. The sources reviewed do not present viewing as a requirement. Keeps the cat away from a possible infection risk and avoids an unfamiliar scent. Caregiver comfort is the deciding factor.

Do not describe viewing as providing “closure.” The sources reviewed do not support that claim, and the cat’s reaction cannot be predicted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there a typical timeline for how long a cat grieves?

No. The sources reviewed do not establish a clinically validated feline grief scale or a timeline. Changes reported in the 2016 and 2024 studies were caregiver observations, so they do not show how long any cat’s behavior stays altered. If a change persists, have a veterinarian examine the cat rather than waiting for a set period to pass.
