Large breeds such as Maine Coons can take up to 18 months. Full size has no exact birthday. Breed, genetics, nutrition, and environment all shift the timing, so these ages are ranges to check against your individual cat, not a guaranteed cutoff.
Why there is no single finish date
Growth is a gradual process rather than a switch that flips at a set age. Kittens gain weight fastest in the first months, then the rate slows as the skeleton finishes developing and the body fills out. A cat can look nearly adult well before growth has stopped, which is why owners often misjudge when a kitten is finished. Veterinary guidance from VCA Animal Hospitals describes growth as varying by breed and depending on genetics, nutrition, and environment. None of these can be read from age alone.
Growth milestones by age
The table below uses VCA Animal Hospitals’ kitten and feeding guidance. These are broad reference points for a typical kitten, not predictions for a specific animal.
| Age | Typical stage | Source and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| About 30 weeks (roughly 7 months) | Approaches 80% of adult size | VCA, feeding growing kittens |
| About 6 months | About 75% of adult size | VCA, general feeding guidelines for cats; a broad estimate |
| About 40 weeks (roughly 9 months) | Reaches adult body size | VCA, feeding growing kittens |
| 9 to 12 months | Most cats reach 80% to 90% of predicted adult size | VCA, guidance on switching kitten to adult food |
| 10 to 12 months | Mature to adulthood | VCA, feeding growing kittens |
| About 12 months | Growth typically complete | VCA, general feeding guidelines for cats; a broad estimate |
The sources do not fully agree on the endpoint. One VCA page places adult body size at about 40 weeks, while another says most cats are still reaching 80% to 90% of their predicted adult size between 9 and 12 months. A practical reading is that the frame is largely in place by around nine months, while the final stretch of growth can run to a year or later.

How breed changes the timeline
| Cat type | Typical maturity window | How predictable adult size is |
|---|---|---|
| Most cats, including many mixed-breed cats | 9 to 12 months | Mixed-breed adult size and appearance are less predictable than those of a pedigreed cat, according to Cornell Feline Health Center |
| Large breeds such as Maine Coons | Up to 18 months | Breed-specific adult weights are not established in these sources |
If you are comparing a typical cat with a large-breed cat, the timeline is the most reliable difference the guidance supports. Precise adult-weight comparisons across breeds are not something these sources establish, so avoid reading a final weight into a breed name alone.
How to track your cat’s growth
- Weigh the kitten at a consistent interval. Use the same scale, at the same time of day, and log each result. Regular weigh-ins are the simplest way to see whether growth is continuing.
- Check body condition. Run your hands along the ribs and spine. You should be able to feel the ribs with light pressure without seeing them prominently, and the body should show a visible waist when viewed from above.
- Compare against a growth chart. VCA points to Waltham Kitten Growth Charts as a tracking aid. Read the trend across several weigh-ins rather than any single number.
- Ask your veterinary team to interpret the results. VCA advises having the veterinarian or clinic staff read the chart and assess the individual cat’s progress.
Feeding through the growth period
Kittens need food formulated for growth because their nutrient needs differ from those of adult cats. VCA describes a typical transition to adult food around 12 months once growth is complete. Its maturity guidance advises weighing age and maturity together and consulting a veterinarian before switching, especially for large-breed cats.
