Orphan Kitten Club works on two fronts at once. It runs a Southern California nursery that provides round-the-clock specialist care for bottle babies and kittens with medical needs, and it helps shelters and rescues improve their own ability to save kittens through grants, staffing support, mentorship, and veterinary research. The organization’s stated mission is “to change the world for kittens,” and its impact totals are its own reported figures rather than independently audited counts.
What the Club does
Orphan Kitten Club describes its vision as a future in which all kittens have the resources to thrive. Its work is organized around four areas: shelter capacity, medical care, research, and specialist neonatal care. Its listed programs include a kitten nursery, medical grants, shelter grants, mentorship, and ethical research. The organization’s own history traces its founding to 2016 by Hannah Shaw, following an origin story that began with a kitten rescue in 2009.
The useful way to understand the model is that it has two parts that feed each other. The nursery handles the hardest cases directly. The grant, staffing, and mentorship work tries to make the same kind of care possible in shelters that do not have a specialist nursery of their own.
Direct care: the Southern California nursery
The nursery is the Club’s direct-care component. According to the organization, it provides round-the-clock care for bottle babies and for kittens with medical needs. That makes it a place for the kittens that need the most intensive attention, rather than a general adoption shelter.

Capacity-building: how the Club works with shelters and rescues
The Club’s broader efforts are aimed at partners. Its grants cover shelter staffing, supplies, infrastructure, and urgent veterinary care. Mentorship is meant to help partner organizations improve how they care for kittens over time. The organization’s own pages describe the aim as equipping shelters rather than doing all the work itself.
- Medical grants address individual treatment needs and urgent veterinary care.
- Shelter grants fund staffing, supplies, and infrastructure, which tend to last longer than a single treatment.
- Mentorship shares neonatal care practice with partner staff.
Research that is meant to change shelter practice
The Club also funds and collaborates on ethical veterinary research. Its research pages state that kittens are underrepresented in veterinary research, and they describe partnerships with universities to generate evidence that shelters and veterinarians can use in their decisions. Two projects are highlighted: a UC Davis study on respiratory infections and a project examining morbidity and mortality in young kittens.

The clearest published example of that research being applied is in the Club’s 2025 Impact Report, which covers work published in 2026. The report says a 2024 Club-funded UC Davis study found that kittens with upper respiratory infections recovered more quickly when famciclovir was included in treatment. It then describes how Lawrence Humane Society in Kansas used a Club grant to introduce treatment standards for three common conditions.
The report summarizes the outcome for the grant term this way: “During the grant term, 248 kittens were directly impacted: 116 treated for diarrhea, 106 for URIs, and 26 for ringworm.”

Reported impact figures
The organization’s current mission page reports the following cumulative totals. They are published by Orphan Kitten Club itself. The materials reviewed do not include a methodology or independent audit for these headline numbers, so they should be read as reported impact figures rather than independently verified counts.

Comparing the Club’s program areas
The Club’s programs are complementary parts of one model, not competing options. Three comparisons help show how they differ in purpose and reach. This framing is an editorial summary of the programs the organization describes.
| Comparison | Direct care | Partner capacity-building |
|---|---|---|
| Who receives the help | Kittens in the Southern California nursery, including bottle babies and kittens with medical needs | Shelters and rescues across the U.S., which then care for their own kittens |
| Typical form of support | Round-the-clock specialist nursery care | Medical grants, shelter staffing and supply grants, and mentorship |
| Time horizon | The immediate care of individual kittens | Longer-term staffing, infrastructure, and practice improvement |
A second useful split is between clinical practice and research. Clinical practice helps the kittens in front of a team today. Research aims to change the standards that shelters use tomorrow, which is why the Lawrence example matters: it shows a research finding moving into a treatment protocol.

A note on formula
Bottle-fed kittens are a central part of the nursery’s work, and the Club reports distributing more than one million meals of formula. The organization’s pages do not name a brand of milk replacer or endorse a product, and nothing here recommends one. Anyone caring for a bottle baby should follow the feeding guidance from their veterinarian or shelter.
Orphan Kitten Club and the UC Davis Orphan Kitten Project are different organizations
The names are easy to confuse. The UC Davis Orphan Kitten Project is a student-run nonprofit that takes in orphaned kittens, uses foster caregivers, and trains veterinary students in neonatal kitten care. Orphan Kitten Club is a separate organization with its own nursery, grants, and research partnerships, and it is the one described in this article.
A 2025 University of California article about the UC Davis project includes a quote from Rogers, who says: “It takes a village because we’re running an entire rescue.” That quote refers to the UC Davis project, not to Orphan Kitten Club.
The Club’s own statement of purpose
The organization’s mission page states: “Orphan Kitten Club’s mission is to change the world for kittens.” The materials reviewed do not include a named individual’s quotation about the Club itself, so the mission statement is the organization’s own direct statement of its aims.
The impact figures above are the strongest test of that mission, but they are the Club’s own reported numbers. The Lawrence Humane Society example is the most detailed independent-facing case in the Club’s 2025 report, and it is one partner’s grant term rather than a full evaluation of the program.
