Yes, this is common. A cat that hides, avoids touch, hisses, or seems distant after a veterinary visit is usually reacting to fear, stress, and an unfamiliar experience. That reaction is temporary in most cases and does not by itself show that the bond has been broken. Give your cat space, a quiet retreat, and time to come back to you on its own terms. If the change is severe, lasts longer than expected, or comes with other concerns, contact the treating veterinarian.
Why a cat may seem to pull away from you
Cats rely on familiar surroundings and predictable routines. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) describes a clinic trip as a chain of unfamiliar experiences: a carrier, transport, new sights, sounds and smells, strangers handling the cat, and sometimes medical procedures. Any one of these can be stressful, and together they can leave a cat feeling unsafe for hours or days afterward.
Withdrawing is how many cats protect themselves. AAHA quotes Sarah Heath, BVSc, DipECAWBM (BM), PGCert, Vet Ed FHEA, FRCVS, who explains: “Leaving the home or the location where you feel safe is not a normal thing for a cat. So yes, it is reasonable for them to feel that being extracted from their safe place is potentially threatening.” A cat that hides from you after this kind of trip is responding to the threat it just experienced, not making a considered judgment about you.
Behaviors that are typical after a visit
Zoetis Petcare, whose article is authored by Heather Berst, MA, VMD, a veterinarian, lists general signs of stress that cats may show after a visit. They are examples, not a diagnosis of your individual cat:

- Hiding under furniture or in closets
- Restlessness or agitation
- More vocalizing than usual
- Trembling
- Excessive grooming
- Inappropriate elimination
- Defensive behavior, including hissing or swatting when approached
Some of these signs are normal for a frightened cat. Others, such as house-soiling or defensiveness that is new and intense, deserve a closer look (see the section on when to call the veterinarian).
How long the change usually lasts
Zoetis Petcare states that most cats return to their normal behavior and habits within 12–24 hours. The page does not show a publication year, so treat this as a general estimate rather than a prediction for your cat. It is not a guarantee. If normal activity has not returned within about a day, Zoetis advises contacting a veterinarian. For a cat that has had surgery, anesthesia, or new medication, the treating veterinarian’s discharge instructions take precedence over any general timeline.

What to do when you get home
The goal in the first hours is to lower pressure, not to rebuild closeness through touch. The steps below follow the approach of the Feline Veterinary Medical Association (FelineVMA) owner guidance and the Zoetis advice above.
- Set up a quiet room. Choose a low-traffic room with food, fresh water, a litter box, and a comfortable bed. Keep food and water away from the litter box.
- Open the carrier and step back. Leave the carrier door open in that room so your cat can come out when it is ready.
- Do not reach into hiding places. Pulling a cat out from under a bed or forcing petting usually increases fear.
- Let your cat approach. Sit nearby, speak quietly, and offer food or a favorite toy. Touch only if your cat moves toward you and seems to welcome it.
- Keep routines predictable. Feed, play, and clean the litter box at the usual times so the home feels familiar again.
- Follow discharge instructions exactly. This includes medication schedules, activity limits, wound care, and any restrictions on food or water.
If there are other cats at home
A returning cat may be a different cat to its housemates for a short time. FelineVMA’s owner handout says: “When you arrive home after a trip to the veterinary practice, your cat may smell different to your other cats.” Clinic odors, bandages, clipped fur, or an e-collar can all make the cat look and smell unfamiliar. Housemates may hiss, avoid the returning cat, or fight with it. This is a recognized homecoming problem and does not necessarily mean the relationship is permanently damaged.

Introduce the cat back into the household in stages:
- Keep the returning cat in its carrier briefly while you watch how the others respond.
- Separate the cats if there is tension. Place the returning cat in a quiet room with its own food, water, litter, and bed. If another pet is hissing or chasing, separate them immediately to prevent escalation.
- Exchange bedding. Swap blankets or beds between the cats so each carries the other’s scent, then let scent and familiarity return through normal grooming and everyday household activity.
- Reintroduce gradually. Allow short, supervised contact and watch body language. Give more time if any cat seems angry or keeps avoiding the others.
- Ask about surgery. After an operation, ask the treating veterinarian when contact with housemates is appropriate.
When to call the veterinarian
Most post-visit changes settle with rest and patience. Contact the veterinarian promptly if you notice any of the following:

AAHA recommends a carrier that lets the cat stand, turn, sit, and lie down comfortably, is ventilated and easy to clean, and has a front entry plus a removable or top-opening top for veterinary access. The AAFP/ISFM owner guidance describes a sturdy hard-sided carrier with top and front access. A hard-sided cat carrier with a removable top is a practical choice for this reason, though it is a handling tool rather than a treatment for mistrust or illness.
Some additional options can help, with the usual caveats:
- Familiar soft bedding in the carrier can help a cat feel more secure.
- Calming pheromone products can be used according to the product label. FelineVMA’s handout says they can be sprayed on carrier blankets 15 minutes to four hours before travel, with the cat away from the blanket while spraying. Effects vary, and no outcome is guaranteed.
- Prescription medication may help some cats with strong travel fear. Ask your veterinarian rather than dosing your cat yourself.
- Low-stress clinic care. Ask the clinic how it handles fearful cats. FelineVMA recommends choosing a designated Cat Friendly Practice or Cat Friendly Veterinarian when possible. These programs are service pathways and do not guarantee a calm visit.
If your cat’s fear around visits is strong, raise it with your veterinarian before the next appointment so accommodations can be planned in advance.
