Most of the time, a cat that ignores you is expressing a preference about attention at that moment, not rejecting you. The situation calls for a veterinary check when the withdrawal is new, sudden, or comes with other changes in how the cat eats, moves, grooms, or uses the litter box.
Why cats seem to ignore their people
“Ignoring” is your interpretation of what you observe. A cat that doesn’t come when called, looks away, or walks off when you sit down may simply not want interaction right now. Individual sociability varies widely, and a cat that has always been independent is not necessarily unhappy. The useful question is whether this cat’s behavior has changed from its own baseline.
It wants space
Cats often choose when and how they interact. A cat may be content to be in the same room while keeping its distance, and may approach on its own terms rather than in response to your voice or a hand held out to it. Ignoring a call can also be a learned pattern: if calling a cat has repeatedly been followed by something it dislikes, such as being picked up, medicated, or moved, it may stop responding to the call.
It feels wary or stressed
Fear and anxiety reduce a cat’s willingness to engage. Changes in the household, such as a new person, a visitor, a move, renovation work, or tension between pets, can all make a cat more cautious. A cat that is hiding more or avoiding certain rooms may be signaling stress rather than indifference.

Its hearing or vision has declined
Aging can reduce hearing and vision, and a cat with either problem may appear to ignore you when it simply did not hear or see you. Older cats are the most likely to show this, but the decline can be gradual enough that owners miss it. A cat that responds to touch or movement but not to sound, or the reverse, deserves a closer look.
It is in pain or unwell
This is the explanation that matters most, because it is the one owners are least likely to suspect. Veterinary pain guidance lists decreased interaction, hiding, lethargy, reduced appetite, and reduced grooming among possible pain-related signs in cats. Behavior can therefore be an early clue to illness rather than a separate issue. Sudden withdrawal in a cat that was previously responsive should prompt a medical assessment before you assume the cause is emotional or environmental.

Sudden change versus a lifelong pattern
Onset is the most informative single feature. A cat that has always kept its distance is different from one that used to greet you and has stopped. Use the comparison below to organize what you have noticed.
| Feature | Likely lifelong preference or situational | Warrants a veterinary check |
|---|---|---|
| Onset | Has always been this way, or started after a clear household change | Sudden or progressive decline from its usual level of interaction |
| Context | Specific to a person, room, loud noise, or visitor | Happens everywhere and with everyone, including you |
| Other signs | None, and appetite, energy, grooming, and litter-box habits are normal | Hiding, less activity, changes in appetite or drinking, reduced grooming, litter-box accidents, or trouble jumping |
| Response to sensory cues | Responds to touch or movement but not to voice, or the reverse, with a known pattern | New inconsistency in responding to voice or visual approach, or a change in reaction to touch |
These are observation prompts, not a home test. A single row in the right-hand column is worth noting; several together, or a sudden change, is a reason to book an appointment.

When to call a veterinarian
Contact your veterinarian promptly if your cat shows any of the following:
- A sudden or progressive drop in normal interaction, especially if it has lasted more than a short period or is getting worse
- Hiding more than usual, or spending long periods in unusual places
- Reduced activity, lethargy, or less interest in play
- Changes in appetite or drinking
- Reduced grooming, including a coat that looks unkempt
- Litter-box accidents or changes in how it uses the box
- Altered mobility, reluctance to jump, or stiffness
- Unusual vocalization
- Sensitivity to being touched, or a reaction when you handle a particular area
Do not wait for dramatic signs. Cats are good at masking discomfort, and the VCA Animal Hospitals guidance on illness signs in cats puts it directly: “Cats have evolved to hide signs of illness and pain.” A quiet, withdrawn cat may be the only visible sign of a problem that is already well established.

What to bring to the appointment
Write down when you first noticed the change, whether it is constant or only in certain situations, and any recent household changes. Note any shifts in eating, drinking, grooming, elimination, play, movement, or response to sound. A short video of the behavior at home is often more useful than a verbal description, because the behavior may not show up in the clinic.

If the cat is otherwise well and the change is clearly situational, low-pressure contact tends to work better than trying to win the cat back. Let the cat approach you, speak in a calm voice, and sit at its level rather than looming over it. Avoid chasing, cornering, or forcing touch, and keep handling brief and predictable.

Once a medical cause has been considered, reward-based activities can give you a structured way to interact. Veterinarian-authored guidance from PetMD describes simple clicker training and the use of a target stick for basic tasks. Use treats the cat likes, keep sessions short, and stop before the cat becomes frustrated. Training is not a fix for a sudden change in sociability; if the cat’s interest in you has dropped suddenly, the veterinary visit comes first.
Sources: The guidance above draws on AAHA and AAFP pain-management guidelines, a peer-reviewed review of feline behavior and health, a veterinary school resource on feline behavior changes, VCA Animal Hospitals’ illness guidance, AAFP and ISFM guidance on feline interaction, and PetMD’s veterinarian-authored article on why cats ignore their owners. The sources describe patterns and warning signs; none of them can tell you what is happening in an individual cat without an examination.
