Over time, through patient and consistent positive interactions, he came to treat a blanket as something to carry, lie on, and rest with. Best Friends told his story in a feature published February 11, 2026, titled “Faces of No-Kill: A dog’s security blanket.”
Who Mai Tai was when he arrived
Mai Tai came to the sanctuary from a shelter and was not yet comfortable in his new home. He was wary of unfamiliar people and of the unfamiliar environment around him. His comfort did not appear all at once. The Best Friends account describes a gradual adjustment built on patience, repeated positive contact, and time spent with caregivers.
His history also shaped the way staff approached bedding. Mai Tai had a record of ingesting soft items, so he had not been given soft bedding. That detail matters for everything that follows, because the blanket was a deliberate choice made with that history in mind.
How his comfort was built
Bridgette Tamburello, a supervisor at the sanctuary’s Dogtown, worked with Mai Tai to help him feel more at ease and to build social connections. According to the feature, three things helped draw out a warmer response:

- Rides around the sanctuary in a golf cart. Time moving through the grounds gave him new experiences without pressure to interact.
- Treats. Food rewards gave him a positive association with the people and activities around him.
- A volunteer’s playful, high-pitched voice. This playful tone helped elicit a warmer response from him.
These are details reported about Mai Tai specifically. They describe what worked for one dog at one sanctuary, not a general training or behavior plan.
The blanket, step by step
The blanket was introduced as part of this slow process. The feature reports the sequence as follows:

- Staff offered Mai Tai a blanket while watching him closely.
- Tamburello watched for chewing, the behavior that would have signaled a problem given his history.
- Mai Tai did not chew it. Instead he treated it carefully, carrying it around the space.
- He took the blanket outdoors and lay on it while sunning himself.
- He later brought the blanket back inside and settled it at his preferred nap spot.
The account says he continued to arrange blankets and rest on them afterward. For a dog who had been kept from soft bedding because of ingestion, that shift from avoidance to routine use is the core of the story.
What this example does and does not establish
The Best Friends feature is a single-dog narrative, and it supports a narrow conclusion. It does not show that:

Best Friends’ definition of no-kill
The title refers to Best Friends’ broader no-kill work. The organization states that its goal is for every U.S. shelter and community to reach no-kill. In this story, Best Friends defines no-kill as saving every dog and cat in a shelter who can be saved, while also accounting for community safety and good quality of life for pets. The definition is Best Friends’ own, and it includes welfare considerations, not just the number of animals saved.
The feature also frames lifesaving as shared work between shelters and communities. It points readers toward fostering, adopting, and advocacy as ways to take part.

If you are adapting this to your own dog
Mai Tai’s experience offers a method more than a product recommendation. If you want to try a similar approach with your own dog, these steps follow directly from what the story shows:
- Start by asking whether your dog has a history of chewing or swallowing soft materials. If so, talk with your veterinarian before offering bedding.
- Introduce a blanket only while you can watch the dog closely, and be ready to remove it at the first sign of chewing.
- Let the dog explore the blanket at its own pace, as Mai Tai did when he carried it and rested on it outdoors.
- Check the blanket’s construction yourself, because the story does not identify the blanket’s materials or whether it is washable.
- Build comfort in the same gradual way the story describes, using positive experiences rather than forcing contact.
