Saving The Aggressive Breeds (STAB) is a dog rescue based in Charlotte, North Carolina, and it is listed as a partner of Best Friends Animal Society. Its stated purpose is to challenge the stigma attached to what it calls “power breeds,” rescue dogs described as “aggressive,” and educate the public about them. Adoption and fostering are the main ways to help, and the rescue points visitors to its adoptable dogs on Petfinder. This guide explains what the organization says about itself, how to approach adoption or fostering, and which details you should confirm directly before you commit.
What the organization is
The rescue’s official website names it Saving the Aggressive Breeds Inc. and states that it is based in Charlotte, NC. The Best Friends Animal Society partner profile gives the location as Charlotte, NC 28217-2065. A separate nonprofit directory entry, ProPublica’s Nonprofit Explorer, lists it as Saving The Aggressive Breeds Rescue Inc., which is the same organization under a longer legal-style name. If you are searching for it, either name will find the same rescue.
The directory records that the organization received federal tax exemption in December 2025 and classifies it under animal protection and welfare. For a rescue, that classification matters mainly because it tells you the group operates as a registered nonprofit rather than a private seller or breeder.
Its mission and the “power breeds” framing
The Best Friends profile quotes the rescue’s mission as helping to “‘STAB’ the stigma of our power breeds.” The work has two parts: rescuing dogs that are labeled aggressive, and educating the public about why those labels are often misleading. The profile also includes the rescue’s own summary of its approach:

“Power breeds” and “aggressive breeds” are the rescue’s own framing. They describe the category of dogs the organization works with and the stigma it wants to address. They are not a scientific ranking of which dogs are dangerous, and they do not establish how any particular dog will behave. A breed label is a weak predictor of an individual dog’s temperament. Training history, past experiences, health, age, and the household the dog enters usually matter more, and the rescue’s emphasis on matching a dog to a lifestyle reflects that same idea.
How to adopt or foster through STAB
The rescue’s website links to its adoptable dogs on Petfinder, so that is the most direct place to see who is currently available. Best Friends describes adoption as a way to help homeless pets, noting that each adoption opens space for another animal to find a home. Its description of fostering is that it can be a short-term commitment. These are general descriptions from Best Friends. The rescue’s own application and care requirements are what apply to your situation.

Confirm the trial adoption period before planning around it
A Petfinder search summary says the rescue requires a two-week trial adoption before an adoption becomes final. The full listing could not be checked in full, so the wording and whether the policy is still in effect remain unconfirmed. Ask the rescue directly before you arrange time off, a move, or introductions with other pets, and get the answer in writing if the timeline matters to your household.
Before you contact the rescue
- Review the current adoptable dog listings on Petfinder through the rescue’s website, and note each dog’s individual description rather than assuming anything from its breed label.
- Write down your household’s daily schedule, including hours away from home, and whether anyone works from home.
- List every animal in your home and whether they have been introduced to a dog before.
- Identify who would handle the dog during vet visits, walks, and training, and whether you have a plan for a dog that needs a slower introduction.
- Ask about the trial adoption period, the application steps, and any follow-up support the rescue offers after placement.
Questions to ask about each dog
The rescue’s approach depends on fit, so compare individual dogs on the criteria that actually predict whether a placement will work. When you speak with the rescue about a specific dog, ask about:

Fostering: what Best Friends says and what to verify
Best Friends presents fostering as a way to help dogs while they wait for permanent homes, and it describes the commitment as short-term. Foster arrangements vary by rescue, so the rescue should tell you what it covers, what it expects from you, and how it handles emergencies, veterinary care, and any transport needs. Because the sources reviewed do not list STAB’s foster supplies or care instructions, ask the rescue for its current requirements before buying equipment or making promises to a dog’s future adopters.

Best Friends describes its Network as thousands of public and private shelters, rescue groups, spay and neuter organizations, and other animal-welfare groups. It says it offers partners marketing help, fundraising events, webinars, grants, and other resources. That description is about the network in general. It does not state which of those services STAB has used, so do not read partner status as proof of any specific grant, event, or funding arrangement.

What is not established
No outcome figures were found for this rescue. There is no published count of dogs placed, return rates, or the number of animals currently in care, and no study measuring the stigma the rescue targets. Financial data is also unavailable in the ProPublica directory. That directory notes that smaller organizations may file a short-form Form 990-N e-Postcard rather than a full return, so the absence of financial data there does not mean the rescue has no revenue or activity. For a clearer picture, ask STAB for its most recent annual filing or financial summary, or check the nonprofit’s filings directly.
General national statistics about shelter populations or dog breeds do not measure this rescue’s work, so this article does not rely on them.
