It is easy to wipe clean and resists the scratching that wears down plastic. It does not make a box odor-proof, and it does not guarantee a good fit. The size of the box, its side height, its open or covered format, and the material of each part matter more than the word “steel” on the listing. Below are the stainless-steel models we could confirm from published specifications, along with the caveats that apply to each.
We could not verify seven models with enough reliable product-level detail to rank them, so this article does not present a numbered top seven. The figures come from published comparison guides and marketplace listings, not from independent measurements, and prices and stock change often.
Are stainless steel litter boxes better than plastic?
Only in specific ways. The feline guidance we checked does not establish stainless steel as better than plastic for odor. The Ohio State University Indoor Pet Initiative, which gives the most authoritative general care advice in this area, focuses on box size, number of boxes, and scooping habits, and does not discuss box material. A PupsParadise review of one seller’s stainless-steel listing found no evidence for the odor claim the seller made, and noted that the guidelines it consulted also say nothing about box material.
Where steel can help is in the practical details:
- Surface smoothness. A smooth, non-porous pan is easier to wipe down and less likely to hold residue than a scratched plastic pan. This is a general property of the material, not a measured result for any specific product.
- Resistance to scratching. Cats that dig hard can gouge plastic over time. Steel is less likely to show that wear, which can make cleaning more consistent.
- Stability. Metal pans are typically heavier than basic plastic ones, so they can be less likely to slide when a cat steps in and out.
Plastic has its own advantages. It is usually cheaper, lighter to carry, and more common in sizes made for large cats. Choosing steel is a preference about durability and cleaning, not a health or odor decision.
#1 Best Overall
- Large Capacity: The Idymere stainless steel litter box measures 16.93"L x 12.99"W x 5.12"H, offering ample space for kitty, kittens, elderly cats or medium cats to do their business comfortably. This litter box is ideal for single or multiple small-cat households. The open design of this large litter box promotes air circulation and helps reduce unpleasant odors, ensuring your pets have a fresh and comfortable environment.
- Strong and Sturdy: Made of high-quality stainless steel, this litter box resists corrosion, wear, and rust. Unlike plastic litter boxes, it does not trap residue or odors, helping keep your home smelling clean. The sturdy, non-porous surface of the metal litter box prevents scratches where dirt and smells can hide, creating a healthier space for your cat.
- Easy Cleaning: The spacious stainless steel design of this cat litter box requires less frequent litter changes. The smooth surface of the litter pan prevents waste from sticking, allowing litter and debris to slide easily to the bottom for quick cleaning. It’s especially useful for cats that kick litter or urinate high, and it dries fast for simple maintenance.
- High Sides & Safe Rounded Edges: Featuring raised sides, this stainless steel litter box effectively contains litter scatter—perfect for energetic or large cats. The litter box with high sides also help prevent urine and feces from adhering to the sides. The kitten litter box with smooth, rounded edges ensure safety for your cat and make the metal litter box easy to lift without hurting your hands.
- Versatile Use & Multiple Sizes: This stainless steel litter box suits various pets, including adult cats, kittens, rabbits, ferrets, and snakes. This stainless steel box can also double as a pet bathing tub or storage container. Available in several sizes, you can choose the best fit litter tray for your pet without taking up too much space, ensuring comfort and flexibility for different needs.
Five stainless steel models with published specifications
The table below lists each model as its listing or comparison guide describes it. Where a value is not published, the table says so. Dimensions are listing figures, not independent measurements, and can differ from what arrives at your door.

| Kirecoo Large High-Sided | 17.5 × 13.6 inches; all steel with 6-inch sides; no scoop listed (PupsParadise, 2026) | Kittens and small cats, or an open all-steel pan | Small footprint despite “Large” in the name |
| AIPERRO XL Enclosed | Covered steel box with mat and metal scoop reported (PupsParadise, 2026) | Readers who want a covered format in steel | Dimensions and configuration conflict in the listing summary; verify before buying |
These five are not ranked against each other. Each is a candidate to check against your cat’s size and your household, and the caveats above are the reasons to verify them before buying. Prices, ratings, and stock were recorded in these guides at specific dates in 2026 and are not stated here as current.
Plastic reference: Frisco High-Sided XL
If interior floor area matters more than steel construction, the Frisco High-Sided XL is a useful benchmark. Perch & Purr reports a 24 × 18-inch exterior and a 19.75 × 12.875-inch interior floor (September 2026). It is plastic, so it is not a stainless-steel pick, but its interior figures show what a comparable floor looks like in measured terms.

How to choose the right size and format
Measure the interior, not the exterior
Exterior dimensions include the walls and any enclosure, so they overstate the space a cat can use. Compare interior floor dimensions where the listing gives them. The practical test from Ohio State is simple: a cat should be able to stand and turn around comfortably in the box. Check this against your own cat’s length, not the box’s name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsMatch side height to the cat
Higher walls help contain scatter, which matters for cats that dig vigorously or spray while standing. Low entry helps kittens and older cats climb in and out. Many stainless models pair a steel pan with a higher wall or a removable enclosure, so you may be able to combine a low entry with containment by choosing a model that allows height to be added or removed.
Choose open or covered based on your cat
Ohio State says cats generally prefer large, uncovered boxes. Some cats prefer the privacy of a covered box, and a covered box can concentrate odor inside the enclosure. If you choose a covered model, check how easily you can lift the lid and clean the interior, because you will need to do that often.

Check the material of each part
“Stainless steel” can describe only part of a product. The WoofiGo XL uses a stainless pan with an ABS plastic high wall. The AIPERRO XL is described as a steel box, but its listing summary conflicts on configuration. Check the pan, rim, surround, lid, and scoop separately, and look for the material in the product description rather than the title.
Plan the number of boxes
Ohio State’s Indoor Pet Initiative gives what it calls its “Golden Rule”: one litter box per cat, plus one. It also recommends a box on each level of a multi-story home. One large steel box does not replace that count.
Cleaning routine for a steel litter box
- Scoop solid waste at least once a day, following Ohio State’s owner guidance.
- Empty the box completely once a week, removing all litter.
- Wash the pan with warm water and a mild dish detergent, then rinse thoroughly.
- Dry the pan completely before adding fresh litter, since trapped moisture can encourage odor.
- Inspect the rim and any joins or enclosure seams for residue, and clean them with the same detergent.
Avoid bleach or harsh chemical cleaners unless the manufacturer’s instructions permit them. Residue from strong products can deter cats from using the box.

Checklist before you buy
- Confirm the interior floor is large enough for your cat to stand and turn around.
- Check the listing’s dimensions against the live product page, not a comparison summary.
- Identify which parts are stainless steel and which are plastic or mixed material.
- Decide on open or covered based on your cat’s behavior and how easily you can access the box.
- Choose a height that contains scatter without making entry difficult for kittens or older cats.
- Confirm whether a scoop is included; some listings do not list one.
- Plan one box per cat plus one, with a box on each level of a multi-story home.
Use this list to shortlist the models above, then check each live listing before you order.

Where a listing gives no value, the box is marked “not stated.” Those gaps should be resolved from the manufacturer or retailer page before buying.
A note on evidence: no controlled study has been found comparing odor in stainless steel and plastic boxes, so any odor claim for a specific model should be treated with caution.
Cats are individuals. Some will ignore a box that looks perfect on paper, and others will use an imperfect one without complaint. Watch your cat’s habits for a few weeks after changing boxes before deciding whether the new box fits.
Finally, if a cat stops using its box, consult a veterinarian, since changes in litter habits can signal health problems.
