FRONTLINE Spray is a fipronil topical spray that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has accepted for use on cats, dogs, kittens, and puppies 8 weeks of age or older. The label directs you to mist the coat using approximately 1 to 2 pumps per pound of body weight, with the higher amount for long or dense coats, and says not to reapply for 30 days. This guide explains what the product is, how the label describes applying it, the hazards it lists, and when to contact a veterinarian. It is based on the EPA-accepted label dated June 28, 2016, so always check the package in your hands against these directions.
What FRONTLINE Spray is
FRONTLINE Spray is a topical spray whose active ingredient is fipronil at 0.29%. The EPA accepted label identifies it as a pesticide product for external use on pets. According to the label, it controls fleas, ticks, and chewing lice. The EPA registration record lists it under EPA registration number 65331-1, with Boehringer Ingelheim Animal Health USA Inc. as the registrant, and shows the product as registered. When the record was checked, it displayed the June 28, 2016 label as the most recent accepted version.
The label also states that the product aids in control of sarcoptic mange infestations in dogs. That is a dog-specific claim. It does not establish a use for cats, so do not apply the cat directions below to mange treatment.
Species and minimum age on the label
- Cats: labeled for use on cats.
- Kittens: labeled for kittens 8 weeks of age or older.
- Dogs and puppies: also labeled for dogs and puppies 8 weeks of age or older.
The label does not list a weight restriction in the portions reviewed for this guide. Products for a different species, age, or formulation are not covered by these directions.

How the label directs application
The U.S. label describes the following sequence. Read your own package before you start, because wording can change between versions.
- Put on household latex gloves.
- Hold the bottle upright.
- Ruffle the cat’s coat so the skin is visible.
- Spray a mist across the back, sides, abdomen, legs, shoulders, and neck.
- For the head and eye area, spray the product onto a gloved hand and rub it gently into the hair. Keep it away from the eyes and mouth.
- Continue until the hair is damp to thoroughly wet.
- After use, wash your hands and any exposed skin thoroughly with soap and water.
How many pumps the label specifies
The label expresses the amount as approximately 1 to 2 pumps per pound of the animal’s body weight, and it calls for the higher rate on long or dense coats. It does not state where within that range a particular animal should fall beyond that coat distinction. The table below shows only the arithmetic of the label rate for a few sample weights. It is not an individual recommendation for your cat, and the label does not state the volume delivered per pump in the portions reviewed for this guide.

If your cat is close to a boundary, has a long or dense coat, or has a health condition, ask your veterinarian before you decide on an amount.
How often to apply it
- Start: the label says to use the product before flea season.
- Ongoing: the label says to use it monthly thereafter to help prevent flea buildup or reinfestation.
- Minimum gap: the label says not to reapply for 30 days.
- Water and sun: the label says the spray remains effective after bathing, water immersion, or exposure to sunlight.
The label describes at least 30 days of control of fleas, ticks, and chewing lice. This is the manufacturer’s labeled claim, as accepted by the EPA. It is not an independent comparison against other products, and it does not state how effective the product is for every animal or environment.

Side effects and hazards
Hazards to people handling the product
- The label is for external use only.
- It warns that the product may cause severe eye irritation.
- Avoid breathing the spray and avoid contact with skin, eyes, or clothing.
- The human precaution section states that the product is harmful if swallowed or absorbed through the skin.
Reactions in pets
The label states: “Individual sensitivities, while rare, may occur after using any pesticide product for pets.” It does not provide a cat-specific incidence rate for adverse effects, and no such rate was identified in the sources reviewed for this guide. The word “rare” is the label’s own description and should not be read as a measured frequency. The label also does not provide a full list of signs to watch for, so monitor your cat after each application and treat any change you notice as a reason to ask your veterinarian.

EPA’s general consumer guidance advises following the label, using pesticide products only on labeled species and sizes, monitoring pets for side effects or signs of sensitivity, and keeping the product package available if an adverse event occurs.
When to contact a veterinarian
- Before the first use on a cat that is medicated, debilitated, aged, pregnant, or nursing, the label advises consulting a veterinarian.
- Any sign of sensitivity after application should prompt you to contact your veterinarian and, if needed, the National Pesticide Information Center, as EPA guidance recommends.
- Signs that persist or worsen: the label says: “If signs persist, or become more severe, consult a veterinarian immediately.”
- Accidental exposure to a person: follow the human precautions above, and contact a poison control center or your physician for symptoms.
Comparing FRONTLINE Spray with other flea products
A full-coat spray and a spot-on product differ in how they are applied, what they contain, and what their labels say.
