Fiber can help some cats with diarrhea, mainly cats whose diarrhea is linked to colitis (inflammation of the large intestine). No fiber product has been shown in head-to-head comparisons to be the best choice, so this guide does not rank four winners. It describes four product categories that a veterinarian may discuss with you. Whether any of them is appropriate depends on the cause of the diarrhea, your cat’s hydration, age, severity, and other signs.

Why this guide does not name a single best product

Veterinary references support fiber as one possible dietary intervention for some cats with colitis-associated diarrhea. Merck Veterinary Manual’s colitis review, updated in full in June 2025, states that fiber supplementation or a commercial high-fiber food can improve diarrhea in many animals with colitis. Cornell Feline Health Center’s inflammatory bowel disease guidance, last updated in April 2018, says soluble fiber such as psyllium may help cats with inflammatory colitis.

Neither source compares named products against each other, and the sources reviewed do not include head-to-head trials or dated outcome statistics for these products. Any claim that one supplement treats feline diarrhea better than another would go beyond the evidence. The useful comparison is between categories, and the choice within a category belongs to your veterinarian.

Diarrhea is a sign, so fiber is only one possible answer

Diarrhea describes a symptom, not a diagnosis. Cornell notes that its causes range from a brief dietary or stress-related episode to infectious, inflammatory, neoplastic (tumor-related), or non-intestinal disease. Fiber does not address every one of those causes. A supplement bought to “fix” diarrhea without a diagnosis can delay treatment for the condition that is actually making your cat sick.

#1 Best Overall
Vetnique Glandex for Cats, Anal Gland Powder & Fiber for Scooting
  • FELINE ANAL GLAND POWDER YOUR CAT WILL ACTUALLY EAT: Patented vet formula that supports healthy anal gland emptying, firmer stools, and normal digestion in cats over 12 weeks. Tuna-flavored powder helps reduce scooting, dragging, and fishy odor.*
  • REDUCES SCOOTING, DRAGGING & FISHY REAR-END ODOR: Scooting, dragging, or licking under the tail usually means full glands. The soluble and insoluble fiber for cats bulks the stool so bowel movements help the glands empty naturally, often within a few weeks.
  • MORE THAN PUMPKIN FOR CATS, A PATENTED FIBER + PROBIOTIC + ENZYME BLEND: Pumpkin seed and apple pectin firm the stool, Lactobacillus acidophilus balances the gut, quercetin supports histamine response, bromelain breaks down protein, plus vitamins C and E.
  • EASY DAILY DOSE, MADE FOR PICKY CATS: One scoop daily, about 97 scoops per 4oz jar (a 3-month supply for cats up to 25 lbs), for cats over 12 weeks. Sprinkle on kibble, mix into wet food, or stir into water for picky cats. Not for dogs.
  • VET-FORMULATED, TRUSTED BY 125,000 VETS: Glandex is a leading anal gland supplement for cats, recommended by over 125,000 veterinarians.* Pair with Glandex Anal Gland Hygienic Wipes for outside cleanup. Made in the USA, from vet-founded Vetnique.

Before deciding whether fiber makes sense, ask your veterinarian to consider:

  • Whether the diarrhea is short-term or has lasted more than a day or two.
  • Whether your cat has other signs such as vomiting, poor appetite, or lethargy.
  • Whether your cat is drinking enough and showing no signs of dehydration.
  • Whether a diagnostic workup, such as stool or blood testing, is needed to identify the cause.

The four option categories

The table below sets out the four categories in terms of what the sources establish. Use it as a list of questions to bring to your veterinarian, not as a ranking.

Option Format and labeling Fiber basis Who should choose it Main limit
Vetasyl Fiber Capsules (Virbac) 500 mg capsules. Virbac says the product is for dogs or cats when a fiber supplement is recommended. Psyllium husks and barley malt extract. A cat whose veterinarian has recommended a fiber supplement. Manufacturer information does not establish it as a diarrhea treatment or as better than other products.
DiaGel (psyllium combination supplement) VCA identifies it as used in cats and dogs to help control diarrhea and constipation. Delivery form not stated in the VCA source. Psyllium combined with other components. The sources reviewed do not list them. A cat whose veterinarian has selected a combination psyllium product and given directions. The VCA source does not provide head-to-head efficacy results.
Plain psyllium formulation Form and additives vary by product. Psyllium. Merck and Cornell identify psyllium as a fiber option for some colitis cases. Only with veterinary approval of the product and the amount. Do not default to a human product. Formulations vary, and no product-level evidence is given in the sources reviewed.
Veterinary high-fiber diet A full diet, not an add-on. Royal Canin’s April 2025 product guide describes Feline Gastrointestinal Fiber Response, with indications including constipation and fiber-responsive GI disease. Fiber blend that lists psyllium in the ingredient list (per Royal Canin’s guide). Merck includes commercial high-fiber diets among colitis options. A cat whose veterinarian has diagnosed the problem and selected the diet. Not an automatic choice for every cat with diarrhea. Whether it is sold without a veterinary prescription is not stated in the sources reviewed.

When comparing these options, the honest axes are the active fiber source, whether the product is labeled for cats, the format (capsule, powder, gel, or diet), the indication, how easily you can give it, and whether a veterinarian has chosen it for your cat. Claims about taste, speed of effect, value, customer satisfaction, or “best overall” are not supported by the sources and should be ignored.

Giving psyllium safely

Psyllium is the fiber most often named in these sources, so the administration rules matter. VCA’s guidance on psyllium products sets out the following points:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose a product labeled for the species you are treating. For this topic, that means a product labeled for cats.
  2. Follow your veterinarian’s directions on how much to give and how often. Do not use label or human-product amounts as a substitute for that advice.
  3. Give it with food or in adequate liquid, as specified, and make sure fresh water is always available.
  4. Do not mix psyllium into thickened food or thickened liquid. VCA warns this carries a choking risk.
  5. Tell your veterinarian about any medications your cat takes and any other health conditions, since VCA advises asking about interactions.

Psyllium is not appropriate for cats with suspected intestinal blockage or difficulty swallowing. VCA lists both as reasons not to use it.

When fiber can make diarrhea worse

More fiber is not automatically better. The sources describe two ways it can backfire:

Rank #3

  • Tail-wag Flavor: Your dogs will love the pumpkin flavor and it is easy to use. Simply sprinkle as dog food toppers or add water to make a tasty pumpkin puree for pets to enjoy while supporting their digetive health. The product is suitable for adults
  • Overly liquid stools. Cornell warns that excess soluble fiber can make stools overly liquid and can affect how well nutrients are absorbed.
  • Gas, cramping, and diarrhea. Merck notes that highly fermentable fiber can produce gas associated with cramping and diarrhea.

If diarrhea worsens after you start a fiber product, stop giving it and contact your veterinarian rather than adjusting the dose yourself.

Plain canned pumpkin and other fiber sources

Plain canned pumpkin appears in constipation guidance as a possible fiber source. None of the sources reviewed establishes it as a treatment for feline diarrhea, so it should not be used in place of veterinary care or in place of the options above. Ask your veterinarian before adding any new food to a cat with diarrhea.

Supplements are not reviewed the way drugs are

VCA notes that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration does not review non-drug health products for safety or effectiveness before they are sold. A fiber supplement sold for cats therefore should not be read as FDA-approved or as proven to work for diarrhea. VCA’s guidance on DiaGel puts it this way, in the words of Kayla Hyland, DVM: “Your veterinarian is the best source of information about the safety of non-drug health products in pets.”

Rank #4

  • ENHANCES ANAL GLAND HEALTH: This cat anal gland supplement encourages natural anal gland expression during bowel movements, reducing the risks of impaction and infection. This prebiotic for cats is ideal for supporting comfort and preventing gland-related issues that affect digestive health.

When to see a veterinarian instead of trying a supplement

A supplement is not a substitute for diagnosis. Contact your veterinarian promptly if your cat has:

  • Severe diarrhea, or diarrhea with blood.
  • Diarrhea that lasts longer than a day or two with signs such as poor appetite, lethargy, or vomiting, as Cornell advises.
  • Vomiting, or signs of generalized illness.
  • Signs of dehydration, since VCA notes that diarrhea can lead to dehydration.
  • Symptoms that persist or keep coming back.

Questions to ask your veterinarian

  • What do you suspect is causing the diarrhea, and what tests would confirm it?
  • Is fiber appropriate for my cat, and if so, should it be a supplement or a diet?
  • Which specific product do you recommend, and is it labeled for cats?
  • How much should I give, how often, and with how much water?
  • Could this product interact with any medication my cat takes or with another health condition?
  • When should we reassess, and what changes should prompt a call?

Veterinary references do not establish that any one of these four categories is best for all cats with diarrhea. The right option is the one your veterinarian selects after identifying what is causing your cat’s symptoms.
