The amount, the length of treatment, and the form your cat receives are set by your veterinarian for a diagnosed infection and the specific authorized product dispensed. Published label figures show how dosing works, but they are not a prescription for your cat. The most important feline-specific safety risk is not the dose alone. It is the way a tablet or capsule travels. Doxycycline that stays in the esophagus can injure it, so how the medicine is swallowed matters as much as how much is given.
What the published doxycycline doses mean
Veterinary product information for doxycycline gives a general oral dose of 10 mg per kg of body weight per day. The daily amount may be split into two administrations. For feline Chlamydia felis infection, the same European product information (Version 9.1, dated November 2024) recommends 28 days of treatment. These are directions for one authorized product. They are not a dose for a cat that has not been diagnosed, and they should not be applied to other infections, formulations, or species without the prescriber’s guidance. Labels are revised over time, so check the current product leaflet with your veterinarian.
| Source | Context | Figure given | How to read it |
|---|---|---|---|
| European veterinary product information, Version 9.1 (November 2024) | General oral dosing | 10 mg/kg body weight per day, which may be split into two administrations | Label direction for that authorized product, not a population statistic |
| European veterinary product information, Version 9.1 (November 2024) | Feline Chlamydia felis infection | 28 days of treatment | Duration under that label for that indication only |
| UK Veterinary Medicines Directorate product information, revised June 2025 | General labeled dose | 10 mg/kg per day | Matches the European figure for general dosing; interaction and adverse-event information is in the same document |
| US human prescribing label (DailyMed) | Human patients | Human dose schedules, not reproduced here | Not feline guidance; used only for general side-effect context |
Why body weight is part of the calculation
Because the label figure is expressed per kilogram, the amount depends on an accurate weight. The product information stresses this point. Ask the clinic to weigh your cat at the visit that sets the prescription, and confirm that the amount on the label was calculated from that weight. If your cat’s weight changes during treatment, ask the veterinarian whether the amount should be recalculated instead of adjusting it yourself.
Interactions that reduce absorption
The 2025 UK product information notes that antacids and multivalent-cation preparations can reduce how much doxycycline is available. Multivalent-cation products include some antacids and many mineral supplements containing calcium, magnesium, aluminum, or iron. Such products are easy to overlook because they are often sold without a prescription.

Giving doxycycline so it reaches the stomach
Doxycycline tablets and capsules are the forms most closely linked to feline esophageal problems. Veterinary guidance notes that cats can move some tablets and capsules through the esophagus slowly, so a dose given dry can lodge there. In the ISCAID antimicrobial guidelines published in the Journal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, doxycycline tablets are frequently reported among drugs associated with feline esophageal problems.
What the case report describes
Cannon et al. (2005) described four cats with esophageal strictures after oral doxycycline. A stricture is a narrowing that can make swallowing difficult. Oral doxycycline can cause irritation, ulceration, or stricture if it remains in the esophagus. In these four cats, regurgitation was the predominant presenting sign, and the authors recommended a food or water swallow with oral medication.

How to give each dose
- Confirm the form and whether it may be altered. Ask your veterinarian whether the product is a tablet, capsule, or liquid, and whether it may be crushed or split. Do not do either unless the product’s instructions and your prescriber say it is appropriate.
- Pair each oral dose with a swallow. Veterinary guidance describes giving these forms with a lubricating substance or in a pill treat, with at least 2 mL of liquid, or followed by a small amount of food. Use the method your veterinarian specifies for this product.
- Never give a dose dry. A tablet or capsule given without a food or water chaser is the avoidable risk the case reports point to.
- If water by syringe is specified, use the volume your veterinarian gives. The case-series authors wrote: “Therefore, all oral medication administered to cats should be given either with food, or followed by a small amount of water (5 ml), given by syringe.” The 5 mL figure was part of their discussion, not an individual order for your cat. A plain oral dosing syringe can measure a chaser; this article does not recommend a specific brand.
- Observe your cat afterward. Note any regurgitation, difficulty swallowing, or refusal of food or water, and use the table in the section below to decide whether to call.
- Keep to the schedule. If a dose is missed, or the product is changed, ask the prescriber what to do rather than doubling up or stopping.
Side effects to know about
Esophageal signs
The most serious feline-specific effect is esophageal injury. In the four cats of the 2005 case series, regurgitation was the main sign. Regurgitation is food or liquid coming back up with little or no retching. Vomiting usually involves retching and often originates in the stomach. Describing the difference accurately helps your veterinarian judge what happened.
Gastrointestinal effects
The US human doxycycline label lists anorexia, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, and dysphagia among possible effects. It lists esophagitis and esophageal ulceration as rare effects for tetracycline-class tablets and capsules. These figures come from human patients. The sources cited here do not establish a reliable feline incidence for gastrointestinal effects, so the human rates should not be read as what a cat can expect.

Other reactions listed on veterinary labeling
The 2025 UK veterinary product information lists gastrointestinal disorders, hypersensitivity, photosensitivity, and other reactions as very rare for dogs and cats. “Very rare” is a frequency category on that product’s label. It is not an estimate of risk that transfers to every cat, formulation, or use.
When to call your veterinarian
| Sign | What to do |
|---|---|
| Regurgitation after a dose | Call the prescribing veterinarian promptly. This was the predominant sign in the feline strictures reported. |
| Difficulty swallowing, or inability to keep food or water down | Call the prescribing veterinarian promptly, especially if these signs follow a dose. |
| Vomiting, diarrhea, or loss of appetite | Contact your veterinarian to discuss. These effects are listed for doxycycline, but no reliable feline frequency is established. |
| Sudden facial swelling, hives, collapse, or breathing difficulty | Treat as an emergency and contact an emergency veterinary service immediately. |
How strong is the evidence?
The feline esophageal risk rests on a small body of case reports. Cannon et al. (2005) describe four cats. A case count is not an incidence rate. The authors state that the incidence of companion-animal esophageal injury after doxycycline is not known, and no denominator-based feline incidence figure is available from the sources cited in this article. The European and UK figures describe product-label dosing and adverse-event categories, not measured risk in cats. The authors put the practical caution plainly: “Caution should be exercised when administering oral medication to cats, especially doxycycline, and should be accompanied either by a water or food swallow.”

- Used to treat a variety of susceptible bacterial infections in small animals, including chlamydia in cats and tick-borne infections in dogs (e.g., Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever).
- Can also be used for certain tick-borne and respiratory conditions in horses.
- Avoid dry pilling, especially in cats and other small animals; always try to administer with a moist treat and/or a small amount of liquid.
- May be prescribed for other animal species; please consult your veterinarian.
- While this drug does not have an FDA-approved indication for all animal uses, it is commonly accepted for veterinarians to prescribe this medication for use in animals.
Questions to take to your veterinarian
- Which exact product, strength, and form (tablet, capsule, or liquid) is dispensed, and how many milligrams is that per dose for my cat’s weight?
- How long should treatment last for this diagnosis?
- What should follow each dose: food, water, or a pill treat?
- Is my cat taking any antacid, mineral supplement, or other product that could reduce doxycycline’s effect, and how far apart should it be given?
- What should I do about a missed dose?
- If my cat struggles with tablets, is a different form or product appropriate?
Use only doxycycline dispensed on a veterinary prescription. Avoid sellers who offer it without one, because you cannot confirm the product’s identity, strength, or storage.
