Albon for Cats: Dosage, Safety & Side Effects

Albon (sulfadimethoxine) is prescription-only in the US. Here is what the label says about dosing, duration, hydration, and side effects, and when to call your veterinarian.

Albon is the brand name for sulfadimethoxine, a sulfonamide antibiotic. In the United States, federal law allows it to be used only by or on the order of a licensed veterinarian, so the dose, form, and duration for your cat should come from the prescription, not from a label table or an online guide. This article explains what the label says, how the sources describe feline use, and what to watch for while your cat is on it.

What Albon is and what it is labeled for

Sulfadimethoxine is a sulfonamide antimicrobial. The US Albon label, published on DailyMed by the US National Library of Medicine (label updated November 7, 2019 for the oral suspension), describes its use against sulfadimethoxine-sensitive bacterial infections in dogs and cats, and against coccidiosis-associated bacterial enteritis in dogs.

That distinction matters. The label does not name feline coccidiosis as an indication. Veterinary references, including the VCA Animal Hospitals drug information page for sulfadimethoxine, describe its common use in cats for intestinal coccidia in the Isospora group. Prescribers use it on that basis, but the label wording and the clinical practice are not the same statement, and you should not read the label as having approved your cat’s specific diagnosis.

Dosing: what the label says and how to read it

The US label gives a loading dose of 25 mg/lb (55 mg/kg), followed by 12.5 mg/lb (27.5 mg/kg) every 24 hours. These are label figures, written for the general labeled use. They are not a calculation to run for your cat, and a veterinarian may choose a different regimen for a particular animal.

Albon is sold in two forms in the label you will see on DailyMed, and the two are not interchangeable at the same numbers:

Feature Oral suspension (5%) Tablets
Concentration or strength 250 mg per 5 mL (5%) 125 mg, 250 mg, and 500 mg
Label dosing examples 1 teaspoon (5 mL) per 10 lb initially; one-half teaspoon (2.5 mL) per 10 lb for each later daily dose Examples are listed by tablet size and animal weight in the tablet label
Label source DailyMed oral suspension label, updated November 7, 2019 DailyMed tablets label, updated November 7, 2019

The suspension examples are consistent with the mg/lb figures above: 5 mL of a 250 mg per 5 mL product is 250 mg, which matches the 25 mg/lb initial dose for a 10 lb animal. The half-teaspoon example works out to 125 mg per 10 lb for later days. Even so, do not convert a dose from one form to the other, and do not use the label’s per-10-lb examples for your cat unless your veterinarian has told you to. Ask the prescriber to write the amount in the units on your bottle, such as mL for the suspension or number of tablets for a specific strength.

If the bottle, measuring device, and written instructions disagree, call the veterinary office before giving the next dose.

How long treatment lasts

The US label states that “In most cases treatment for 3–5 days is adequate.” It also says treatment should continue until the animal has been free of symptoms for 48 hours. In other words, the duration follows the cat’s clinical response, not a fixed calendar set in advance.

Cats.com, in an article by Chris Vanderhoof, DVM, MPH (last updated April 4, 2026), describes 5 to 10 days as common in feline Isospora cases. That range is the author’s clinical description and is broader than the label’s general statement. Your veterinarian decides the length for your cat, and you should not stop early because the bottle has run low or because the cat looks better on day two.

Hydration and when to reevaluate

The label’s main precaution is about fluids. It says: “During treatment period, make certain that animals maintain adequate water intake.” VCA’s drug information gives similar advice in plainer language: allow your pet to drink water freely to prevent dehydration.

Who should not receive Albon, and what to disclose

VCA lists the following as reasons the drug should not be used: a known allergy to sulfonamides, thiazides, or sulfonylureas; severe liver or kidney dysfunction; dehydration; pregnancy; and nursing. It advises caution with mild liver, kidney, or thyroid dysfunction, frailty, and a history of urinary obstruction.

Side effects: what is listed and what is uncertain

Sources describe a range of possible effects. They are grouped below by how the veterinary references present them.

  • Common, in dogs per VCA: decreased appetite, vomiting, and diarrhea.
  • Serious sulfonamide effects listed by VCA: dry eye (keratoconjunctivitis sicca); acute liver inflammation with yellowing of the skin or eyes; fever; hives; polyarthritis; facial swelling; increased drinking and urination; urinary crystal or stone formation; allergic reactions including anaphylaxis; anemia; and low white blood cell counts.
  • Hypersensitivity in cats: Cats.com describes hypersensitivity reactions as rare in cats and notes that some effects are reported more often in dogs.

The sources do not give a reliable feline frequency for any of these effects. Published adverse-event rates for cats were not identified in the references reviewed for this article, so no one can tell you how likely a given reaction is in a particular cat. Treat each listed effect as a possibility to report, not as a predicted outcome.

Giving the medicine at home

  • Shake the liquid suspension well before each measurement.
  • Measure with a marked dosing syringe or measuring device that matches the units on the label. A kitchen teaspoon is not an accurate measure.
  • Keep fresh water available throughout the course.
  • If your cat vomits after a dose given on an empty stomach, VCA notes that a later dose may be given with a meal or treat. Confirm this with your veterinarian before you do it, because the prescriber’s instructions take priority.
  • People with sulfa allergies should avoid handling the medicine or wear gloves, according to VCA.

Diarrhea in kittens does not confirm coccidia

Many owners look for Albon because a kitten has diarrhea. Cats.com states that diarrhea alone does not establish coccidia. Other causes and other parasites can produce the same signs, and the appropriate step is a veterinary examination with fecal testing before any course is started. Do not treat a kitten with leftover medicine from another cat or from an earlier illness.

When to call the veterinarian right away

Contact your veterinary office immediately if you suspect an overdose or any adverse reaction, and if your cat shows any of the serious signs listed above. Also call if your cat has not improved within 2 or 3 days, as the label directs, or if it stops drinking water during treatment. For a suspected overdose or allergic reaction, do not wait for the next scheduled check.

When you call, have the product name, strength, the amount given and the time, and your cat’s weight ready. That information lets the veterinary team assess the situation quickly.
