There is no single way to help animals. You can volunteer with a local shelter, support policy changes, educate others, donate, or make consumer choices that align with your values. Start with the kind of work you can sustain and the needs of organizations in your area.

What does “beyond animal welfare” mean?

Animal welfare work often aims to improve animals’ conditions and reduce suffering. Some animal-rights advocates go further, challenging human uses and institutions that they believe cause that suffering. PETA’s animal-rights advocacy reflects that organization’s position; it is not a neutral consensus definition. You do not have to adopt one particular framework to take useful action for animals.

Choose how you want to help

The right route depends on your time, location, interests, and whether you prefer direct care or broader policy work.

Route What it can involve Best fit if you want to
Policy advocacy Learn about a local issue, respond to action alerts, contact elected officials, attend public meetings, or work with a community group. Influence rules, public decisions, or institutional practices.
Hands-on service Socialize animals, help at adoption events, transport animals, foster, or support fundraising events. Contribute directly to care in your community.
Education and sharing Share verified campaigns and educational materials from organizations you trust. Help others find reliable information or take action.
Consumer choices Ask businesses about animal-friendly options or consider plant-based choices. Align some everyday choices with your values.
Donations and supplies Give money, organize a fundraiser, or donate items requested by a shelter. Support an organization without a regular volunteer shift.

Get involved in policy and advocacy

Begin with an issue that affects animals where you live. Check current alerts from established organizations, then follow their instructions for contacting officials or participating in public meetings. Humane World for Animals describes volunteers meeting with elected officials and working in their communities; the ASPCA offers advocacy training and support for citizens. Campaigns and action requests change, so consult each organization’s current materials rather than relying on an old alert.

The ASPCA’s official Get Involved page says, “Regardless of your location, there are many ways for animal advocates like you to make a positive difference for animals in need.” Its advocacy opportunities are one way to act, alongside local community work.

Volunteer with a shelter, rescue, or sanctuary

Contact organizations near you and ask what they need now. Possible roles include socializing dogs or cats, helping at adoption events, transporting animals, fostering, or assisting with fundraising. Tasks, schedules, training, age limits, and other eligibility requirements vary by organization.

For example, the Cincinnati-area League for Animal Welfare volunteer page describes orientation sessions and local volunteer tasks. Wildheart Animal Sanctuary’s support page lists volunteering and fundraising options. These are examples, not universal requirements; ask your chosen organization about its own process.

Help if you have limited time or cannot volunteer

Regular shifts are not the only useful contribution. Depending on the organization, you can make a one-time or recurring donation, organize a fundraiser, share a current campaign, respond to an action alert, or give requested supplies. The ASPCA lists fundraising and action alerts; Wildheart includes fundraising and campaign sharing; the League for Animal Welfare lists donations and supply needs.

Before buying supplies, check the organization’s current wish list. The League for Animal Welfare gives examples including litter, cleaning supplies, leashes, and toys, but another shelter may need different items—or may not be able to accept them.

Use education and consumer choices thoughtfully

You can share information from organizations whose work and claims you have checked, or use their educational materials to learn about an issue before discussing it with others. For consumer advocacy, PETA suggests asking local businesses about animal-friendly options, while Humane World for Animals describes work promoting plant-based eating. These are possible approaches, not prerequisites for helping animals; choose them if they fit your own values.

Humane World for Animals reported that over 40% of U.S. egg-laying hens were cage-free as of 2024. That is an organization-reported progress figure, not a measure of the effect of any one person’s purchase or action.

Pick a first step you can sustain

  1. Choose your focus. Decide whether you are most interested in direct care, policy, education, consumer action, or financial support.
  2. Find an organization or issue. Look for a local shelter, rescue, or sanctuary, or identify a current animal-related policy issue in your area.
  3. Check official instructions. Review current volunteer requirements, wish lists, campaign details, or advocacy alerts before acting.
  4. Start at a manageable scale. Try one shift, one action alert, a small donation, or a specific request from an organization, then decide whether to continue.

If you want to explore the animal-rights perspective further, PETA recommends Peter Singer’s Animal Liberation Now in its advocacy article. Treat that recommendation as further reading from an advocacy organization, not as a required starting point.
