A small dog can be a meaningful source of comfort, companionship, and routine—but no verified set of ten owner stories accompanies this topic, and research does not show that tiny dogs are more healing than larger ones. Personal accounts can describe what an owner experienced; they cannot prove that a dog treated or cured a health condition.
Why there are no ten “real owner” stories here
A story presented as a real owner’s experience needs a traceable source and the person’s informed permission. No named owners, dogs, or verifiable personal accounts are established for this collection, so inventing ten anecdotes—or presenting composites as real—would mislead readers. The title’s promise of ten stories cannot be met responsibly on the available evidence.
That does not mean individual experiences are unimportant. A person may describe a dog as a source of comfort or say that caring for one helped bring structure to the day. Those statements should be attributed to the person and reported as their perspective, not converted into a medical conclusion.
What research says about dog-assisted interventions
Studies of structured dog-assisted interventions examine particular activities, populations, and settings. Their findings cannot automatically be applied to everyday pet ownership or to every person and dog.

Healthcare settings
A 2017 systematic review included 18 eligible healthcare studies. Fifteen reported at least one statistically significant positive effect, but most outcome measures did not show a significant treatment effect. The review characterized effects in relevant settings as minor to moderate. Read the review.
Brief interventions and stress response
A systematic review published online on May 16, 2025, identified 26 controlled studies of brief dog-assisted interventions and psychobiological indicators of stress. Its authors concluded: “Evidence to date partially supports the notion that a brief therapeutic intervention with the assistance of a dog may influence the autonomic stress response.” They also called for more standardized measurement methods. This is qualified evidence about brief interventions, not proof that a pet dog will reduce stress for every owner. Read the review.

Mental-health and neurodevelopmental conditions
A systematic review focused on people with mental-health or neurodevelopmental conditions found mixed results and described the evidence base as not robust. That uncertainty makes it especially important not to portray a comforting experience as treatment or a cure. Read the review.
Assistance dogs are a different category
A 2020 review examined trained assistance dogs and handlers with physical disabilities—not ordinary pet ownership or emotional-support dogs. Across 147 statistical comparisons, 68% were null, 30% were positive in the hypothesized direction, and 2% were negative. These results should not be generalized to all dogs or all owners. Does a tiny dog have more healing power?
The evidence summarized here does not establish that small dogs provide greater emotional or health benefits than larger dogs. A dog’s size can be part of an owner’s story, but it is not a basis for ranking breeds or claiming one size is more therapeutic.

A credible account should make clear who is speaking, what they experienced, and what the story cannot establish. Before publication, confirm the details with the owner and obtain permission for their words, identifying information, and any images used.
