Eye cancer in cats is not one disease: tumors can arise in the eyelids, conjunctiva, iris, inside the eye, or the orbit, and cancer elsewhere in the body can also affect the eye. Their signs and treatment vary. A changing spot, sore, or swelling cannot be diagnosed at home, so contact a veterinarian about a new or worsening eye change; some causes are not cancer, but prompt assessment matters.

What causes eye cancer in cats?

There is no single cause for feline eye cancer. Tumors develop in different tissues, and some cancers reach the eye from elsewhere in the body. The Merck Veterinary Manual says ocular tumors are less frequent in cats than in dogs, but tumors that do occur in cats are more likely to be malignant. This is a qualitative comparison, not an estimate of an individual cat’s risk. Merck Veterinary Manual: Tumors of the Eye in Cats

Squamous cell carcinoma

Squamous cell carcinoma can affect the eyelids, conjunctiva, or third eyelid. It is more common in white cats with nonpigmented eyelid margins. It may look like a rough, irregular pink mass or a thickened sore that does not heal. Merck Veterinary Manual: Neoplasia of the Eye in Animals

Iris melanoma and melanosis

Diffuse iris melanoma is described as the most common primary tumor inside the eye in cats. However, a darkening iris is not automatically cancer: benign diffuse iris melanosis can resemble melanoma, and the two can be difficult to distinguish. A veterinary ophthalmologist can assess pigmented iris lesions and advise whether monitoring, testing, or treatment is appropriate. Merck Veterinary Manual: Neoplasia of the Eye in Animals

  • FESTIVAL DECORATION This cat cone can be used as a soft pillow or Christmas or Halloween decoration. The neck rope has been designed with an open knot, and if the rope is too long or there is a risk of the pet breaking free, it can be knotted

Post-traumatic intraocular sarcoma

This rare, locally aggressive tumor is associated with older cats that have chronic uveitis (inflammation inside the eye), prior intraocular damage, or certain past injections into the eye. A 2019 review reported an average interval of approximately 6–7 years between initiating ocular trauma and tumor formation; that figure is specific to this tumor, and the review describes the evidence base as limited. Most injured eyes do not necessarily develop sarcoma. Wood et al., Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, 2019

Lymphoma and cancer that spreads to the eye

Merck identifies feline lymphosarcoma-leukemia complex as the most common secondary ocular neoplasm in cats. It may affect one or both eyes and can occur alongside systemic illness. Other tumors may also spread to eye structures. Merck Veterinary Manual: Neoplasia of the Eye in Animals

What symptoms should you look for?

Signs depend on which part of the eye or surrounding tissue is affected. These changes do not by themselves prove cancer; inflammation, injury, and other conditions can cause similar problems.

  • Iris or inside the eye: a gradually expanding dark area, an irregular iris surface, a pupil that changes size or shape, inflammation, or later signs of glaucoma such as pain or an enlarged eye.
  • Eyelid or conjunctiva: a pink, rough, irregular growth, thickening, or a persistent sore that heals slowly.
  • Possible lymphoma: inflammation or swelling, abnormal blood vessels, retinal changes, or an altered pupil; illness elsewhere in the body may also be present.
  • Orbit (the tissues around the eye): the eye may protrude, the cat may have difficulty closing its eyelids, the surface may dry or ulcerate, or vision, eye movement, pupil responses, or gaze may change. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine: Orbital Tumors

When should you contact a veterinarian?

Contact a veterinarian about any new or changing eye appearance, a mass or persistent sore, pupil change, pain, squinting, vision difficulty, or protrusion. Seek prompt advice rather than waiting for a visible change to become severe: some tumors can progress, and other eye conditions also need timely care. UC Davis advises veterinary assessment for altered appearance, difficulty seeing, blinking, or moving the eye, and changes in pupil size or gaze. A photograph may help you describe how a spot or swelling has changed, but it cannot identify the cause. Do not try to treat or remove a growth yourself. If your cat has a history of serious eye trauma, chronic uveitis, or an eye procedure, mention it during the appointment.

How do veterinarians diagnose an eye tumor?

The veterinarian starts with an eye and physical examination. The next steps depend on where the suspected mass is and what needs to be distinguished. Imaging can show a mass’s location and extent; examination of sampled tissue by a veterinary pathologist may be needed to identify what it is. That distinction matters because different masses can require different treatment. Merck notes that advanced imaging and biopsy can improve diagnosis and treatment planning. If disease may be in the orbit

For a suspected orbital mass, UC Davis describes possible blood tests and chest radiographs before procedures requiring anesthesia. Ultrasound, CT, or MRI may then help locate and characterize the mass. Tissue sampling and microscopic evaluation can be important in selecting treatment. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine: Orbital Tumors

If the iris is pigmented

Because benign melanosis can look like diffuse iris melanoma, an iris mark should be assessed by a veterinarian rather than judged by appearance alone. Merck recommends referral to a veterinary ophthalmologist for pigmented iris lesions. Merck Veterinary Manual: Neoplasia of the Eye in Animals

How is eye cancer in cats treated?

Treatment is tailored to the tumor’s identity, location, growth, extent, and evidence of spread. The veterinary team also considers whether vision and a functioning eye can be preserved, how certain the diagnosis is, and the likely burden of treatment and follow-up. Options are not interchangeable or universally best.

Location or tumor Possible approaches described in veterinary guidance What influences the choice
Eyelid or conjunctiva Surgical excision, radiation, or cryotherapy. Tumor type, size, location, and whether adequate removal is feasible. Merck Veterinary Manual
Focal iris lesion Selected lesions may be treated with surgery or laser ablation; some may be monitored. Whether the lesion is changing, its extent, and specialist assessment. Merck Veterinary Manual
Diffuse or complicated iris disease Enucleation (surgical removal of the eye) may be recommended when a mass grows rapidly or causes complications such as pupil abnormalities, angle involvement, or glaucoma. Extent and behavior of the lesion, complications, and the veterinarian’s assessment. Merck Veterinary Manual
Post-traumatic intraocular sarcoma Early enucleation is recommended for this rare, locally aggressive tumor. Diagnosis and the tumor’s aggressive behavior; optimal-treatment evidence has historically been limited beyond removal of the affected eye. Merck Veterinary Manual Wood et al., 2019
Orbital mass Some masses can be removed while retaining a functioning eye. Advanced or malignant disease may require chemotherapy, radiation, or removal of the eye with the tumor. Mass type, location, extent, and whether the eye can remain functional. UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine

What is the prognosis?

There is no single survival estimate that applies to all feline eye tumors. Outlook depends on tumor type, location, extent, and spread. Merck describes a poor outlook for some eyelid and conjunctival tumors, while noting that earlier diagnosis and referral can improve options and prognosis. For post-traumatic sarcoma, a 2019 review says evidence for optimal treatment has historically been limited beyond removal of the affected eye. Merck Veterinary Manual: Tumors of the Eye in Cats Merck Veterinary Manual: Neoplasia of the Eye in Animals Wood et al., Journal of Feline Medicine and Surgery, 2019

For diffuse iris melanoma specifically, VCA cites metastasis estimates of 19% to 70% and untreated mortality estimates of 30% to 50%. These broad figures belong to that source’s discussion of this tumor; they are not a prediction for an individual cat or for other eye cancers. VCA Animal Hospitals: Melanoma of the Eye in Cats
