Sometimes, for some behaviors—but Feliway is not a guaranteed fix. The clearest home evidence is a placebo-controlled trial in which the FELIWAY Classic diffuser reduced undesirable scratching more than a placebo over 28 days. Findings in veterinary clinics are mixed, and a shelter study found no detectable benefit. The product may be one part of a behavior plan, but it cannot diagnose or treat a medical problem.
What does the research show?
Home scratching: a positive trial with an important caveat
A 2023 randomized, triple-blind, placebo-controlled study in France tested the FELIWAY Classic diffuser for undesirable scratching over 28 days. It included 1,060 caregiver-cat pairs. Scratching frequency decreased for 83.5% of cats in the pheromone group, compared with 68.5% in the placebo group; measures of scratching intensity and a combined frequency-intensity index also favored the diffuser group (study report).
That is evidence of an average benefit for this specific behavior and study setting—not an all-purpose success rate. The study relied on caregiver reports, and many cats in the placebo group also improved. The result does not mean an individual cat is likely to respond at the same rate.
Veterinary clinics: mixed findings
A 2023 appraisal of five studies of an F3 feline facial pheromone analogue in veterinary clinical settings rated the evidence moderate. Four studies found improvement in selected acute-stress indicators; one found no significant effect on behavioral and physiological measures. The appraisal concluded the analogue may reduce some signs of acute stress, but should not be the only mitigation strategy. Handling, clinic design, and medication when indicated can also matter (Veterinary Evidence appraisal).

These results concern veterinary visits and other clinical contexts. They do not establish that a diffuser will resolve a cat’s behavior at home.
Shelters: a null result
A randomized controlled trial in shelter-housed cats found no evidence that the synthetic feline facial pheromone product studied changed stress scores or the incidence of upper respiratory infection (shelter trial). Shelter conditions differ from home life, so this does not rule out every possible home benefit. It does weigh against claims that pheromone products consistently help in every setting.

How should you use a diffuser?
For the Classic diffuser, FELIWAY’s US guidance recommends continuous use, placing it in the room where the cat spends the most time, and keeping it unobstructed. The manufacturer advises allowing at least one month before evaluating a response (Classic guidance). These are product instructions, not a guarantee that the diffuser will work.
A US manufacturer-hosted page quotes Valarie Tynes, DVM, DACVB, recommending at least 30 consecutive days before assessing a response. The same page says some clients see results within the first seven days, while noting that cats vary (FELIWAY “Vet Recommended” page). That account is not a promise of improvement within a week.

Use the spray only as a targeted option if that matches the situation; FELIWAY describes it for travel, vet visits, or specific locations and says its effects last four to five hours (spray guidance). A spray and a continuously used diffuser are not interchangeable instructions.

Urination outside the litter box, hiding, or reduced appetite can have medical causes. FELIWAY’s Classic guidance advises consulting a veterinarian to rule those out; a diffuser will not address an underlying illness (Classic guidance). New or persistent symptoms call for veterinary assessment rather than repeated product trials alone.

Behavioral and environmental needs matter too. The manufacturer notes that a diffuser will not compensate for a dirty or inaccessible litter box, or the absence of an appropriate scratching post (Classic guidance). Address the relevant need alongside any product you choose.
