Keep water and a cool retreat available, change activity plans on hot days, and treat unusual breathing, weakness, confusion, or collapse as an emergency. If you suspect heatstroke, begin cooling and contact a veterinarian promptly—even if your pet seems better afterward.
How do I keep my pet cool in hot weather?
Make it easy for your pet to get out of the heat, and do not rely on outdoor temperature alone to judge safety. Dogs and cats can develop heatstroke in warm or poorly ventilated surroundings or after excessive exercise. Humidity, exertion, and the animal’s ability to reach a cooler space matter too. The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and ASPCA advise particular caution for pets with elevated risk.
Set up water and a cool retreat
- Keep fresh water available, and provide shade outdoors as well as access to a cool indoor area. A pet may not reliably move itself to safety.
- Make sure the resting place is ventilated. On hot days, bring pets inside rather than assuming shade alone will be enough.
- Never leave a pet in a parked vehicle, even in the shade or with the windows cracked. Cars can become dangerous quickly. See the American Veterinary Medical Association’s hot-weather guidance and the ASPCA’s advice.
Change exercise plans, not just the pace
Schedule walks and other strenuous activity for cooler hours. The AVMA advises not exercising dogs during the hottest part of the day or on particularly warm days. Take breaks and bring enough water for both you and your dog. A portable water bottle can make water easier to carry, but having one does not make a hot-weather walk safe.
Check the route as well as the forecast: hot asphalt and other heated surfaces can burn paw pads. The RVC says a surface that is too hot to hold a hand against is too hot for a pet to walk on; the AVMA also warns about hot surfaces.

Adjust for the individual animal
Short-nosed or flat-faced dogs are more vulnerable, as are Persian cats, according to the ASPCA. The AVMA and ASPCA flag flat-faced dogs; the ASPCA and RVC also identify older, overweight animals and pets with heart or lung or airway conditions as higher risk. The RVC additionally includes very young pets and thick-coated animals. Cats can show subtler heatstroke signs than dogs, so an absence of obvious distress is not a guarantee of safety.
Ask your veterinarian how heat affects your pet’s exercise and whether coat care needs to change. Do not shave a dog down to the skin: the ASPCA notes that coat layers help protect against overheating and sunburn. Grooming needs vary by breed. Use only sunscreen or insect repellent labeled for animals.

What are the signs of heatstroke in dogs and cats?
Do not wait for a particular temperature reading if your pet is showing concerning signs. Panting is common in dogs but unusual in cats; panting or noisy, distressed breathing in either animal deserves attention, especially in the heat. The RSPCA, AVMA, ASPCA, and RVC describe signs that can progress from distress to collapse.
Early warning signs
- Excessive panting, difficulty breathing, or noisy or distressed breathing
- Restlessness or agitation, or seeking shade or water
- Drooling; red gums or tongue; or an increased heart rate
- Vomiting or diarrhea
Signs of worsening illness
- Lethargy, weakness, confusion, or unsteadiness
- Collapse or seizures
- Bloody vomit or diarrhea, which the ASPCA identifies as a sign of severe illness
Heatstroke is a veterinary emergency. Move to the response steps below as soon as you suspect it; do not wait for symptoms to become severe.

- Instant Cooling, Rapid Relief: Made with Q-Max > 0.5 cool-touch fabric, this mat delivers an instant cooling sensation as soon as your pet lies down—no plug, water, or gel needed, safe and worry-free. Please note: the mat is not an active cooler; prolonged lying may cause slight warming as it absorbs body heat, which is a normal physical property. Simply have your pet move away briefly; the mat then dissipates heat through air convection and resumes cooling, allowing for a cycle of reuse. Placing it in a well-ventilated area speeds up the cooling recovery. Especially ideal for active dogs that sweat easily or need rapid cooling after exercise.
- Breathes Easy, Stays Comfy: Say goodbye to stuffy, uncomfortable naps! Our lightweight, breathable fabric combined with premium bonded fiber filling promotes continuous air flow, helping your pet release excess heat effectively. Better ventilation means faster cooling recovery – even if the dog mat has warmed up, good airflow helps it bounce back quickly. Instant coolness, cycling comfort – a dry, pleasant retreat for your furry friend.
- Safety Certified, Non‑Slip Design: Certified to OEKO‑TEX STANDARD 100, this mat is free from plugs and gels, made with materials that are safe and non‑hazardous for your pet. The non‑slip dot pattern on the underside keeps the mat firmly in place on any floor, ensuring your companion stays comfortable and secure at all times.
- Effortless Clean, Always Fresh: Simplify your life! This pad is conveniently machine washable and dryer safe (low heat), making cleanup a breeze. Ditch the scrubbing – enjoy a fresh, clean mat with minimal effort, every time.
- Versatile Comfort, Everywhere They Go: Find the perfect fit! Available in multiple sizes as a cooling blanket or mat for cats, puppies, medium, and large dogs. It's especially ideal for heat-prone active breeds or long-haired pals. Whether it's a scorching day, a summer night's sleep, car rides, crate training, or adding a cozy spot to their favorite corner, this is a comfort companion for every adventure and quiet moment at home.
What should I do if my pet overheats?
Start cooling promptly while contacting a veterinarian. Cooling is first aid, not a substitute for professional assessment: serious effects may remain even if the animal appears to recover.
- Move your pet out of the heat. Get them into a cool, ventilated place.
- Begin water cooling and airflow. The best approach depends on the animal’s age and health. For young, healthy dogs, the RVC recommends cold-water immersion. For older dogs or dogs with underlying health problems, it describes pouring water cooler than the dog over them while using a fan, breeze, or air conditioning. If these options are unavailable, use cool water; the RVC cautions against ice-cold water in its fact file. These dog-specific methods should not be treated as blanket instructions for cats.
- Offer water only if your pet can drink. Allow small sips; do not force water.
- Call a veterinary practice or emergency hospital promptly. Follow its instructions and arrange assessment. Keep the vehicle cool with air conditioning or open windows during transport. Do not delay the call or trip because cooling seems to help.
The RVC’s VetCompass guidance says pets should be checked by a veterinarian even if they appear to improve, unless the veterinarian advises otherwise. Its report emphasizes rapid cooling: “The key message for dog owners is to cool the dog quickly, using whatever water you have available provided the water is cooler than the dog. The longer a dog’s body temperature remains elevated, the more damage can occur so the sooner you can stop the temperature rise and start cooling the better.” Emily Hall, Lecturer in Veterinary Education at the RVC and lead author of the report, made this statement in material published and updated 20 July 2023 (RVC VetCompass).

What the available heatstroke figures do—and don’t—show
VetCompass examined 945,543 dogs seen at 886 UK primary veterinary practices during 2016–2018. Of that cohort, 856 dogs presented for veterinary management of heat-related illness. These UK figures describe dogs in the study population; they do not set a safe temperature for every pet or predict one animal’s risk.
The RVC’s 2023 report found that, among cooled dogs, 21.7% were actively cooled before transport to a clinic. Of those cooled dogs, 24% received immersion or evaporative cooling methods the report describes as currently recommended, while 51.3% were treated with wet towels, which it describes as less effective for rapid temperature reduction. The report also cites prior research reporting survival of 97% for mild heat-related illness and 43% for severe illness. Those survival figures come from prior research, not outcomes from the 856-dog cohort, and should not be interpreted as an individual prognosis.
