Normal cat nipples are small, often pink, and may be hidden by fur; males and females generally have similar-looking nipples. A new change is a reason to consider the context and, if pregnancy is possible, ask a veterinarian to confirm it.
What do normal cat nipples look like?
Most cats have small nipple protrusions that are usually pink and partly concealed by fur. Cats Protection reports that cats average six to eight nipples, though an individual cat may have more or fewer. Male and female cats generally have similar-looking nipples, so their appearance alone does not show whether a cat is female or pregnant. Cats Protection

What do pregnant cat nipples look like?
During pregnancy, nipples may become slightly larger and darker or pinker than usual. Cats Protection calls this change “pinking”; it may be noticeable around week three, but the timing is approximate, not a diagnostic cutoff. Cats Protection’s Caring for a Pregnant Cat page describes the change this way: “It is likely that your cat’s heat cycles will end, and you may notice her nipples become darker and slightly larger. This is called ‘pinking’.”
How can I tell if my cat is pregnant by her nipples?
You cannot tell for certain from nipple appearance. A new change may raise suspicion when the cat is an unspayed female that may have mated, especially alongside other possible signs, but none of these signs confirms pregnancy on its own.

| What you notice | What it may indicate | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Small nipples that look much as they did before | Often ordinary appearance; nipples can be difficult to see beneath fur. | Observe for changes and consider whether pregnancy is possible. |
| Nipples that have become slightly larger or darker/pinker | May be pregnancy-associated “pinking,” particularly in a cat that could have mated; it is not proof. | Arrange veterinary advice if pregnancy is suspected. |
| Discharge, a lump, redness, crusting, or marked swelling | May reflect a health problem other than pregnancy. | Contact a veterinarian for assessment. |
Possible pregnancy signs beyond nipple changes include weight gain, increased appetite, vomiting, changes in heat signs, and later behavioral or body changes. Their timing and presence vary. Cats Protection describes possible nipple changes around week three, vomiting or reduced appetite around week four, weight gain during week four, and pregnancy lasting about 63 days—around nine weeks. These are approximate guides, not precise predictions for an individual cat. Cats Protection
How does a veterinarian confirm pregnancy?
Contact a veterinarian if you suspect your cat may be pregnant. Cats Protection says ultrasound may confirm pregnancy around week four. VCA Animal Hospitals describes ultrasound as a way to diagnose and monitor pregnancy: “Ultrasound examination is an ideal imaging technique for pregnancy diagnosis and monitoring, since the fetuses can be seen in real time, and their development and viability can be tracked.” VCA Animal Hospitals, Ultrasound Examination in Cats

Do not try to confirm pregnancy by pressing or palpating your cat’s abdomen. A veterinarian can assess the situation and advise on appropriate care. If pregnancy is confirmed, Cats Protection recommends good-quality kitten food and advises discussing pregnancy care and safe treatments with a veterinarian. If your cat vomits frequently or stops eating, contact a vet. Cats Protection

Ask a veterinarian about suspected pregnancy, and contact one about nipples that are leaking, lumpy, red, crusty, or unusually swollen. These signs do not identify a specific condition by appearance alone, and pregnancy is not the only possible cause. Frequent vomiting or not eating also warrants contacting a vet.
