Keep your dog away from water that is discolored, foamy, scummy, paint-like, or smells bad. If your dog may have entered it, rinse them immediately with clean tap water and stop them licking their fur. If they seem sick after going in or near suspicious water, contact a veterinarian right away—do not wait for symptoms to worsen or try a home treatment.

What is blue-green algae, and why is it risky for dogs?

“Blue-green algae” is the common name for cyanobacteria, microscopic organisms found in water. Some cyanobacterial blooms produce toxins that can cause severe illness or death in animals. Blooms are more likely in warm, slow-moving, nutrient-rich water, but a dog owner cannot determine safety by appearance alone. The CDC explains harmful algal blooms and their health risks.

Signs of a possible bloom include discolored water, foam, scum, mats, or paint-like material on the surface; the water may also smell bad. Blooms can change water color and may be hard to see. Clear-looking water is not proof that it is safe, and appearance cannot confirm whether toxins are present. When in doubt, keep your dog out.

How can a dog be exposed?

A dog does not have to drink the water to be at risk. Exposure can occur by drinking or swimming in contaminated water, contacting it on skin or eyes, inhaling material, swallowing algae, eating contaminated fish or other animals, or licking contaminated water or algae off fur. Keep dogs away from shoreline algae and dead animals as well as the water itself. CDC guidance for pets and livestock describes practical ways to reduce exposure.

What are the signs of blue-green algae poisoning in dogs?

Signs vary with the toxin and the amount and route of exposure. Possible signs include:

  • Vomiting or loss of appetite
  • Low energy or weakness
  • Stumbling or difficulty walking
  • Excessive drooling or foaming at the mouth
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Tremors or seizures

These signs can have other causes, but after possible contact with suspicious water they warrant urgent veterinary advice. Do not wait for a particular symptom or assume a dog is safe because they initially seem normal.

How quickly can blue-green algae affect a dog?

Freshwater cyanotoxin illness signs may begin within minutes to hours after exposure. Severe illness or death can occur within minutes to days after a dog swallows toxins, according to the CDC’s veterinary guidance. Timing and severity depend on the exposure and toxin, so there is no reliable “safe waiting period.” If your dog seems ill after going in or near suspicious water, call a veterinarian immediately. CDC’s veterinary guidance on harmful algal bloom-associated illness describes signs and timing.

What should you do if your dog swims in blue-green algae?

  1. Get your dog out of the water. Do not let them drink it, return to swim or play, eat algae, or eat dead animals washed ashore.
  2. Rinse immediately. Wash your dog with clean water from a tap, shower, hose, or outdoor spigot. Prevent them from licking their fur while you rinse. The CDC advises: “If your animal does go in the water, immediately wash them off with clean water to keep them from licking cyanobacteria off their fur.”
  3. Call a veterinarian if your dog seems sick. Contact them right away if signs appear after your dog went in or near suspicious water. Tell the veterinarian what happened, when it happened, and what signs you have noticed.

If you know or suspect your dog had contact but they seem well, rinse them promptly and contact a veterinarian for advice about the exposure. Do not induce vomiting or give a home antidote. The CDC says there are no known antidotes and no established treatment for freshwater cyanotoxin exposure; veterinary care is supportive and directed at the signs. Treatment decisions—including any use of medication or other interventions—belong to a veterinarian.

How to reduce the risk on future outings

  • Check the water and shoreline before allowing your dog near them; avoid water that is discolored, foamy, scummy, paint-like, or smells bad.
  • Keep your dog from drinking, swimming, or playing in suspect water, and do not let them eat shoreline algae or dead animals.
  • Follow local health advisories and posted warnings when available. A lack of a visible warning does not establish that water is toxin-free.

For animal exposure questions, the CDC lists the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center at 1-888-426-4435 and Pet Poison Helpline at 1-855-764-7661; calls may carry a fee. If your dog is sick, contact a veterinarian rather than delaying care to make a poison-control call.
