Dogs can enjoy swimming, but no setting is risk-free: supervise closely, give your dog a clear way out of pools, bring fresh water, and keep them out of suspect algae blooms. On boats and around open water, use a properly fitted dog life jacket when appropriate. If your dog may have contacted harmful algal-bloom water, rinse them with clean tap water and seek urgent veterinary care without waiting for symptoms.
Before your dog gets in the water
- Match the outing to your dog. Swimming ability varies, and even a confident swimmer can tire or encounter trouble. Introduce water gradually and stay close enough to intervene.
- Check conditions first. Look for local water-quality advisories and posted warnings. At beaches, account for tides and riptides; in rivers, watch for current. Keep your dog under close control around wildlife and other hazards.
- Bring fresh drinking water. Do not rely on pool, lake, river, or ocean water as a drinking source. Offer breaks, especially during active outings.
- Plan how your dog will get out. Pools need a familiar, accessible exit. For boats and open water, consider a well-fitted life jacket with high visibility and a sturdy handle.
Pool safety
Prevent unsupervised access
Keep the pool inaccessible when you are not supervising; the American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends a fence. A dog that can get into a pool may not be able to find or manage the exit.
Teach the exit before swimming
Show your dog where the steps or pet-friendly ramp are, then practice using that route. Keep it clear and accessible whenever the dog is in the pool area.
Manage pool water and chemicals
Keep fresh water nearby so the pool is not your dog’s water bowl. AAHA says swallowing small amounts of properly maintained pool water is unlikely to harm most dogs, but larger amounts can cause gastrointestinal upset. Concentrated pool chemicals can be caustic, and unusually high chlorine after pool shock may irritate skin or respiratory tissues. Keep dogs away from chemicals and recently treated water as directed by the product label and local pool guidance.

Lakes, rivers, and other natural water
Check for harmful algal blooms
Do not let your dog drink, swim, or play in water suspected of having a harmful algal bloom, or eat algae or dead animals near it. CDC guidance also says to keep pets from eating near suspected bloom water. Blooms may look discolored, foamy, scummy, or paint-like, or smell bad, but appearance alone cannot establish whether a bloom is toxic. Harmful blooms can occur in fresh, salt, and brackish water, so check local advisories and heed posted warnings.

If your dog contacts suspected bloom water, rinse them promptly with clean tap water and seek urgent veterinary care. Do not wait for symptoms after a credible exposure: toxin illness can progress quickly, and the CDC says there are no known antidotes. See the CDC’s veterinary guidance, prevention guidance, and Cornell’s blue-green algae poisoning information.
Account for currents and wildlife
Rivers can have currents that are difficult to judge from shore. At the ocean, tides and riptides can put dogs at risk; jellyfish and snakes are additional hazards in some locations. A leash or close control and a visible life jacket can help, but neither replaces supervision or checking current conditions.

Beach and saltwater safety
Keep seawater out of the water bowl
Do not let your dog drink seawater. Bring fresh water and offer frequent breaks; Cornell also recommends hydrating a dog before a beach visit. Excess saltwater ingestion can cause vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, weakness, tremors, or seizures, according to AAHA.
Rinse off salt and sand
After swimming, rinse salt and sand from your dog’s coat and paws, then dry them. Keep an eye out for discomfort or irritation after the outing.

Boat safety
Choose and fit a life jacket carefully
Use a dog life jacket that fits snugly without restricting movement or slipping off. Bright or reflective material improves visibility, and a sturdy handle can help you lift your dog back aboard. The handle is not a substitute for supervision, and a jacket does not make unsupervised swimming safe. AAHA and the American Kennel Club recommend a properly fitted jacket; the VCA boat-safety guide also addresses hazards around pets on boats.
Prepare for the trip
- Provide shade and fresh drinking water.
- Keep your dog clear of fishing hooks, bait, fuel, and other boat hazards.
- Pack appropriate pet first-aid supplies and find the nearest emergency veterinary hospital before departure.
What to do if your dog seems distressed
Get your dog out of the water immediately if you notice labored breathing, excessive panting, disorientation, or uncoordinated swimming. Vomiting or diarrhea after water exposure is also a warning sign identified by AAHA. Contact a veterinarian promptly for concerning symptoms, including coughing, lethargy, skin irritation, ear discomfort, gastrointestinal signs, or changes in breathing. For suspected harmful-algal-bloom exposure, rinse immediately and seek urgent veterinary care even if your dog appears well.
