A cat pooping in the tub may be avoiding a litter box, have developed a preference for that spot, or be dealing with painful or urgent bowel movements. The location alone cannot tell you which. If this is new or keeps happening, contact your veterinarian before assuming it is a behavior problem.

Why a cat may choose the tub

Bathtubs are one of the hard surfaces cats may use when they avoid the litter box, according to the Cornell Feline Health Center. The tub itself does not identify the cause: it does not prove that your cat is constipated, has diarrhea, or dislikes a particular box.

Pain, urgency, or difficulty getting to the box

Digestive problems can make defecation painful or urgent, or make it harder for a cat to control when it goes. Constipation, diarrhea, and other medical conditions are possibilities when toileting habits change. Age-related or mobility problems can also make a box difficult to reach or enter. A veterinary exam is needed to assess the cause.

An aversion to the box, litter, or location

A cat may reject a box that is dirty, difficult to access, or associated with an unpleasant experience. Litter texture, depth, scent, box size and shape, a cover, and the box’s location can all matter. Merck Veterinary Manual lists these among factors that can contribute to inappropriate elimination.

A preference for the tub or a change at home

A cat can develop a preference for a new place after an accident. For example, a painful or urgent episode may lead to avoiding the box, and the cat may then keep using another spot. Stress, conflict with other pets, a disrupted routine, or noise near the box may also contribute, but the tub does not reveal which, if any, applies.

What to do first

  1. Contact your veterinarian if this is new or recurring. Medical causes should be considered before treating the problem as behavioral. Note when it began and whether stool consistency or frequency, appetite, activity, vomiting, mobility, or household conditions have changed. These details help the veterinarian assess the situation; they are not a home diagnostic test.
  2. Get prompt advice if diarrhea comes with other symptoms. Cornell advises contacting a veterinarian as soon as possible when diarrhea lasts longer than a day or two and the cat also has poor appetite, lethargy, or vomiting. Some over-the-counter medicines can harm cats, so do not give one unless your veterinarian recommends it. See Cornell’s guidance on diarrhea in cats.
  3. Review the box setup. Check whether the box is clean, easy to reach, and in a quiet spot. Consider whether a recent change in litter, box, location, or access might have put your cat off using it.
  4. Look for household barriers. Consider nearby noise, blocked routes, changes in routine, or another pet intimidating your cat near the box.
  5. Do not punish your cat. Punishment does not explain or resolve the cause and can increase anxiety and worsen house-soiling, Cornell cautions.

Make the litter box easier to use

Keep the box clean, wash it with mild soap and water, and avoid strong-smelling disinfectants. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) recommends considering a shallow-sided, uncovered box, odor-free litter, and a quiet, accessible location. Observe your cat’s response rather than assuming one setup suits every cat.

AAHA’s general recommendation is at least one litter box per cat plus one more. Box access and size, entry height, whether it is covered, litter scent and texture, cleanliness, and location are all worth reviewing. No particular brand or model is established as a universal fix.
