These five candidates are selected to represent both formats and the product details their manufacturers disclose—not because they have been independently tested or ranked for performance. Compare the format, instructions and composition before choosing; availability and formulas can change.
How to choose a pine litter
Start with the format your household can maintain. Non-clumping pellets do not get scooped out as urine clumps; in Feline Pine’s described system, urine-soaked pellets become sawdust that must be sifted or shaken away. Clumping products are intended for clump removal. A sifting tray may suit a pellet routine, but it is optional and depends on the litter box and product instructions.
- Cleanup: Decide whether you prefer removing clumps or separating sawdust from pellets.
- Disclosure: Check the product’s listed ingredients and sourcing rather than assuming every wood litter is made only from pine.
- Instructions: Follow the directions for the exact product you buy. One brand’s maintenance or transition advice is not universal.
- Evidence: The descriptions below are manufacturer information, not independent odor, dust, safety, environmental or value comparisons. Cat acceptance also varies.
Five pine and softwood litter candidates
1. Feline Pine Non-Clumping — best fit for a pellet-and-sifting routine
Feline Pine’s non-clumping litter is a pine pellet product. The manufacturer says it is made from compressed sawdust byproduct from lumber mills; the pellets absorb urine and break down into sawdust. That means it suits a different cleanup routine from conventional clumping litter: solid waste is scooped, while sawdust is separated from the remaining pellets.
Feline Pine’s product page says to begin with one inch of litter in a clean box. Its FAQ gives product-specific maintenance guidance: scoop solid waste daily, shake the box so sawdust falls and usable pellets rise, and replace the litter when the box is about 90% sawdust. Treat these as the manufacturer’s instructions for this product, not a rule for other pellet brands. Feline Pine product range · Feline Pine FAQ

2. Feline Pine Clumping — best fit if you want a clumping pine formula
Feline Pine also sells a clumping pine formula for people who prefer removing clumps rather than managing intact pellets and sawdust. The manufacturer lists a clumping agent and mineral oil for dust control. Those are product-page claims, not independent findings about dust or performance. Check the current package for its ingredient list and use directions. Feline Pine Clumping
3. Feline Fresh Non-Clumping Softwood — another pellet-format option
Feline Fresh offers non-clumping softwood pellets. Its product page makes claims about sourcing and biodegradability; these are the brand’s claims and should not be read as independently verified environmental findings. Confirm the current product description and follow its own instructions for filling and cleaning the box. Feline Fresh Non-Clumping Softwood
Rank #2
- NO HARSH CHEMICALS, NO ADDED FRAGRANCE—this non-clumping cat litter is an effective odor eliminator that’s made simple with plant-based ingredients like natural pine shavings, plus the absorbent power of ARM & HAMMER Baking Soda.
- BEST NATURAL ODOR CONTROL WITH NO ADDED FRAGRANCES + BAKING SODA. Eliminate the toughest odors with plant-based ingredients instead of harsh chemicals or synthetic perfumes.
- HIGHLY ABSORBENT PINE LOCKS AWAY ODORS. The pine shavings in this lightweight non-clumping cat litter directly bind to odors like thousands of tiny sponges to soak up liquid and lock away ammonia odors to keep the litter box fresh and dry.
- LIGHTWEIGHT so changing and refilling the cat litter box is fast and easy. That’s because this absorbent non-clumping kitty litter is natural and less than half the weight of clay litter and leaves no messy cloud of dust.
- A NATURAL CAT LITTER CHOICE. No new trees are cut down to make the pine shavings in feline pine. This cat litter comes from kiln dried shavings reclaimed from lumber production, so it’s a kitty litter that respects our precious natural resources.
4. Feline Fresh Clumping Softwood — a clumping softwood alternative
This is the clumping-format option in Feline Fresh’s softwood range. The manufacturer publishes numerical comparisons about odor performance and product longevity, but those are brand comparisons rather than independent head-to-head test results. They do not establish how it will perform in a particular home. Review the current package and product page before buying. Feline Fresh Clumping Softwood
5. CATPEL Pine Pellet Litter — a further pellet candidate to investigate
CATPEL’s brand page identifies a natural pine pellet litter, but provides comparatively little product detail. Verify the exact composition, directions and current availability with the seller before treating it as interchangeable with another pellet product. The available description is not enough to make a substantiated claim about odor control, dust or environmental performance. CATPEL

Switching to a pellet litter
For its non-clumping pellets, Feline Pine recommends beginning with one inch of pellets and placing one to two inches of the cat’s existing litter on top. The brand says to reduce the old litter over three to four changes. This is Feline Pine’s transition advice for its product; use the directions supplied with the litter you choose, and make changes at a pace your cat accepts. Feline Pine provides separate transition directions for its clumping formula in its FAQ.

The candidates differ most clearly by format and the amount of product information their manufacturers provide. The available descriptions do not establish a universal winner or independently verify comparative odor control, dust, safety, environmental benefits or value. Choose based on the routine you can sustain, your cat’s acceptance, and the current label and instructions; check that the product is available in your area before relying on an older listing.
