Signs of Cancer in Dogs and Cats: When to See a Veterinarian

Lumps, wounds that do not heal, unexplained weight or appetite changes, and lasting changes in function deserve veterinary attention—but symptoms alone cannot diagnose cancer.

Possible cancer warning signs in dogs and cats include a lump that persists or changes, a wound that will not heal, unexplained weight or appetite changes, unusual bleeding or discharge, and lasting changes in breathing, eating, mobility, or everyday behavior. These signs can also have non-cancer causes; they are reasons to contact a veterinarian, not a way to diagnose cancer at home.

Which changes can be warning signs?

Cancer does not have one standard symptom pattern. Signs depend on the tissue or organ involved, and the same change can arise from many conditions. Cornell University College of Veterinary Medicine and the American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) list these possible warning signs:

  • A new or persistent lump or swelling, especially if it grows or changes
  • A sore or wound that does not heal
  • Unexplained weight loss or a change in appetite
  • Bleeding or discharge from a body opening, or an unusual offensive odor
  • Difficulty eating or swallowing
  • Reduced stamina or reluctance to exercise
  • Persistent lameness or stiffness
  • Difficulty breathing, urinating, or defecating
  • Abdominal swelling

These are screening clues, not proof of cancer. A veterinarian needs to assess the animal and interpret any test results. Cornell’s cancer FAQs and the AVMA’s cancer-in-pets brochure provide general warning-sign guidance for pets.

When should you contact a veterinarian?

Arrange an assessment for persistent or unexplained changes

Contact your veterinarian about a new lump, a lump that persists or changes, a wound that will not heal, unexplained appetite or weight changes, unusual bleeding or discharge, persistent mobility problems, or an ongoing change in your pet’s usual behavior or function. Do not wait for a lump to become large or painful before asking for advice; appearance alone cannot show whether it is benign or malignant.

Seek prompt help for serious signs

Collapse, pale gums, abdominal distention, or difficulty breathing can signal a serious problem and warrant prompt contact with a veterinarian or emergency veterinary service. Cornell describes these signs among possible presentations of hemangiosarcoma involving the spleen or heart, where internal bleeding or impaired heart function may occur. They are not signs of cancer alone, and the example does not make them a general cancer checklist.

What can a lump or other symptom tell you?

A symptom can point to a problem that needs assessment, but it cannot identify cancer by itself. For example, some lymphoma presentations may involve appetite or energy changes, vomiting, diarrhea, weight loss, or increased thirst and urination. Signs vary with the organs affected. The same symptoms may also occur with conditions other than cancer.

A veterinarian may begin with a physical examination and recommend tests based on what they find. For a lump or enlarged lymph node, one possible early step is fine-needle aspiration: collecting cells with a small needle for examination. It is not the right or sufficient test for every mass, and a diagnosis depends on veterinary interpretation. Cornell explains how its oncology service evaluates and supports cases, including working with a pet’s primary-care veterinarian on testing and a plan.

What should you note before the appointment?

For a lump, record where it is, its approximate size, when you first noticed it, and whether it has changed. For other symptoms, note when they began, how often they occur, and whether they affect eating, activity, breathing, or normal routines. If practical, take a dated photograph of a visible change to help describe how it has developed.

Cornell recommends mapping skin masses by location and size to help identify rapid growth or new masses. A notebook or pet health journal can help you keep those observations together, but it does not replace an examination. See Cornell’s general cancer-screening recommendations.

Do the signs differ between dogs and cats?

The general warning-sign lists from Cornell and the AVMA apply to pets, but they do not establish a complete dog-versus-cat symptom comparison. Cancer signs depend on the cancer’s location and the animal’s condition, so do not assume that a symptom is unique to one species or that a pet without the listed signs cannot have cancer.
