Ordinary people help pets in need in practical ways: searching a neighborhood for a lost cat, keeping a microchip’s contact details reachable, using a professional skill to rescue an animal, building a custom mobility aid, or contributing to a veterinary bill. Mary Daly’s feature for Best Friends Animal Society, published May 5, 2026, and originally run in the May/June 2026 issue of Best Friends magazine, gathers several of these stories. The examples below show what that help looked like, and where the feature’s own claims end.
Lost pets: a neighborhood search and a microchip reunion
Lost-pet stories often turn on speed and local knowledge, and the feature gives two that show both.
A cat found behind a fence after a neighborhood search
Julie Nashawaty helped search her Boston neighborhood for Ariel, a 17-year-old cat who had escaped the night before. She and her husband went back to the area where Ariel was last seen, and found her behind a fence. The feature reports that Ariel was reunited with her person. What made the difference was going back to the last-seen spot rather than widening the search at random, a step any household can take at once.
A microchip that still pointed to the right person
According to the feature, Aaron Foster first cared for a dog named Sadie after finding her during a Colorado snowstorm in 2014. Years later, a shelter took in Sadie without a collar or tags. Her microchip still held Foster’s contact information, and that record is what allowed the shelter to reconnect them. Foster’s words, as quoted in the feature: “I’m on my way, sweet girl.”

The lesson is simple and easy to act on. A microchip only helps if the registry record is current, so check that the phone number and address linked to your pet’s chip are up to date, and update them after every move or change of number.
Skills that go beyond the usual
Some of the feature’s most striking examples involve people using a trade or technical ability that most pet owners would never think to offer. Arborists Tom Otto and Shaun Sears run Canopy Cat Rescue, which helps cats stuck in trees return safely to the ground and to their families. The feature says the team has helped hundreds of cats in western Washington. That figure is the feature’s own account and was not independently counted, so treat it as a description of their work rather than a verified total.

The feature frames this as a general point: help fits best when it draws on what a person already knows how to do. A climber, a carpenter, a driver, a photographer, or a student with engineering training can each contribute something specific, and the feature points to exactly this kind of match.
Mobility help: a custom wheelchair for Tibby
Tibby, a kitten in Kentucky, was hit by a car and left with paralysis in her back end. The feature describes students in a school engineering class who made and fitted a custom wheelchair for her, and says they tried different designs with attention to comfort and mobility.

Tibby’s chair was built and fitted for her specific body, not bought off a shelf. That matters for anyone who wants to help a disabled pet move again. Wheelchairs for pets are not one-size-fits-all, so fit, adjustability, comfort, and the animal’s particular condition should guide any decision. The feature does not describe commercial models or recommend a product, so independent product information is the next step if you are considering one. A veterinarian or rehabilitation professional can help assess whether a mobility aid is appropriate for a given animal.
Veterinary bills: a donor who reached beyond one family
An anonymous donor outside Denver gave money toward the bills of at least 10 people at an animal hospital. The donor also contributed to the hospital’s charity fund so that future patients could be helped. The feature reports the count of at least 10 people; it is not an audited total, and the feature does not say how much was given or how wide the need was in that community.

- Foster. Opening your home to an animal waiting for a permanent placement gives a shelter or rescue group room to take in more animals.
- Adopt from a shelter or rescue group. The feature presents adoption as a direct way to support homeless pets and the people who care for them.
- Advocate. Speaking up with others in your community, whether about a local shelter or about a neighbor’s pet in trouble, is named in the feature as a form of help.
- Search. Joining a neighborhood search for a lost animal, like the one for Ariel, works best when you return to where the animal was last seen.
- Offer a skill. If you have a trade or technical knowledge that could help an animal, ask a local rescue or veterinary team whether it could be used.
