Give your cat a calm place to rest, keep food and water within easy reach, and watch how they are acting. Mild tiredness, a smaller appetite, a low-grade fever, or soreness and slight swelling at the injection site can happen after vaccination. These signs should improve within a day or two. Do not give your cat medicine unless your veterinarian tells you to; seek emergency care for breathing trouble, facial swelling, collapse, hives or intense itching, or persistent vomiting or diarrhea.
What you can do at home
Make rest easy
Keep your cat somewhere quiet and comfortable, and let them sleep if they want to. Make fresh water and their usual food easy to reach. If their appetite is mildly reduced, offering wet food may help, according to a veterinarian-authored PetMD article. Follow any specific aftercare instructions from the clinic that gave the vaccine.
Ease mild injection-site soreness
A cold compress for about 10 minutes twice a day is one supportive option suggested by the same PetMD article. Stop if your cat resists or seems more uncomfortable. Avoid repeatedly pressing or manipulating a sore spot or lump.
Do not give medication without veterinary advice
Do not give painkillers, antihistamines, or other medication unless your cat’s veterinarian directs you to. A medicine that is safe for a person may be dangerous for a cat, and the appropriate response depends on the cat and the reaction.

Which reactions can be normal, and for how long?
The 2020 AAHA/AAFP feline vaccination guideline lists lethargy, reduced appetite, fever, and local inflammation among commonly reported reactions. Mild malaise may resolve without treatment. VCA notes that temporary lower appetite or activity often resolves within 24–48 hours (VCA, Vaccines for Cats).
Keep an eye on your cat’s overall condition, not only the injection site. Notice whether they are eating and drinking, how their energy and comfort change, and whether they develop vomiting, diarrhea, itching, hives, facial changes, or breathing problems. A small local reaction can occur, but a lump that grows or otherwise concerns you merits a call to the clinic.

When to get veterinary help
Go for emergency care now
Get immediate veterinary attention if your cat has difficulty breathing, facial swelling, hives or intense itching, collapses, or has persistent vomiting or diarrhea after vaccination. These signs may indicate a serious allergic reaction; do not wait at home to see whether they pass. The AAHA/AAFP guideline says severe reactions are rare, but they need urgent attention.
Call your regular veterinarian
Contact the clinic if mild signs last more than a day or two, worsen, or cause significant discomfort. Call sooner if you are uncertain whether what you are seeing is expected. The AVMA’s post-vaccination guidance advises contacting the veterinarian when mild effects persist beyond a day or two or the pet is significantly uncomfortable. The clinic can interpret the signs in light of the vaccine given and your cat’s health history.

How to monitor an injection-site lump
Keep track of when you first noticed a lump and whether it changes size; avoid repeatedly handling it. The AAHA/AAFP guideline’s “3-2-1” rule calls for veterinary evaluation if a mass:
- Remains 3 months after vaccination;
- Is larger than 2 cm across; or
- Is still growing 1 month after vaccination.
Those are follow-up thresholds, not a reason to wait if a lump is enlarging quickly or otherwise worrying you. Call your veterinarian earlier in that case.

Plan ahead if your cat has reacted before
Tell the veterinary team about any previous vaccine reaction before your cat’s next vaccination. The AAHA/AAFP guideline recommends documenting adverse events and planning future vaccination with the veterinary team. Your cat’s history can help the veterinarian decide how to approach the next appointment.
