The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) estimates that about 1 in 4 dogs will develop cancer during their lifetime. For dogs aged 10 or older, its estimate is about 1 in 2. These are broad population estimates—not a prediction of any individual dog’s risk. Knowing possible warning signs can help you decide when to contact a veterinarian, but signs alone cannot diagnose cancer.

How common is cancer in dogs?

In its 2025 Cancer in Pets brochure, the AVMA estimates that approximately 1 in 4 dogs will develop cancer at some point in life, and approximately 1 in 2 dogs aged 10 years or older will develop it. The figures describe broad groups; the brochure does not give a separate estimate for every breed, country, or veterinary-care population, and they cannot tell you an individual dog’s likelihood. Read the AVMA brochure.

What can affect a dog’s cancer risk?

Age

Cancer is common in older dogs, and risk generally rises with age. Cornell describes dogs beyond seven or eight years as being at risk and discusses twice-yearly physical examinations for animals over eight. That is Cornell’s general guidance, not a universal screening schedule; your veterinarian can tailor checkups to your dog’s age, breed, medical history, and health. Cornell’s screening recommendations.

Breed, inherited factors, and exposures

Some cancers are more common in particular breeds or may be influenced by inherited factors. Cornell also identifies possible contributors that include certain chemicals, ultraviolet or X-ray radiation, some viral infections, and secondhand smoke. However, the causes of most cancers in companion animals are not known. These risk factors do not establish why a particular dog develops cancer, and cancer should not be treated as generally preventable. Cornell’s overview of cancer care.

Spaying and neutering

Spaying or neutering can reduce the risk of some cancers while increasing the risk of certain others. The balance and timing depend on the individual dog. Discuss the potential benefits and risks with your veterinarian rather than relying on a single rule for all dogs.

What are the early warning signs of cancer in dogs?

Possible warning signs include:

  • A lump or swelling that persists, grows, or changes.
  • A sore or wound that does not heal.
  • Unexplained weight loss or loss of appetite.
  • Bleeding or discharge from a body opening, or an unusual odor.
  • Difficulty eating, swallowing, or breathing.
  • Reduced stamina or reluctance to exercise.
  • Persistent lameness or stiffness.
  • Difficulty urinating or defecating, or abdominal swelling.

These signs have many possible causes and are not proof of cancer. Some cancers cause subtle signs, resemble other illnesses, or show no obvious signs early on. A dog that appears well is not necessarily cancer-free. The AVMA advises contacting a veterinarian if you notice a concerning sign or think something is wrong. Does a lump mean my dog has cancer?

No. A lump can have many causes, including noncancerous ones, and its appearance or feel alone cannot establish what it is. Arrange veterinary assessment if a lump persists, grows, or changes. A veterinarian can examine it and decide whether testing is appropriate.

When should I take my dog to the vet?

Contact your veterinarian about persistent or changing signs

Call your veterinarian about a growing or changing lump, a wound that does not heal, persistent unexplained changes in weight or appetite, or ongoing trouble with eating, breathing, elimination, or mobility. These signs warrant assessment because they may reflect cancer or another health problem.

Seek urgent care for severe or sudden symptoms

Sudden collapse, marked weakness, pale gums, sudden abdominal swelling, or rapid or difficult breathing can signal a serious emergency, including internal bleeding. Go to an emergency veterinarian promptly rather than trying to diagnose the cause at home. Cornell notes that some cancers, such as hemangiosarcoma, may have absent or vague early signs; these emergency symptoms do not identify a specific cancer. Cornell’s cancer FAQs.

How do veterinarians check for cancer?

Assessment typically starts with a medical history and physical examination. Depending on the suspected problem and the dog, diagnostic work may include X-rays, ultrasound, blood or urine tests, cytology (examining cells), biopsy (examining a tissue sample), or advanced imaging. Not every dog needs every test; the veterinarian recommends an approach based on the findings and the individual patient. The AVMA’s advice is to contact your veterinarian about signs of illness, not to rely on symptoms or at-home tests to diagnose cancer. AVMA, Cancer in Pets (2025).
