You can lower your dog’s food costs without choosing food by bag price alone: first confirm it is complete and balanced for your dog’s life stage, then compare what the appropriate daily portion actually costs. Measure meals, keep treats modest, and ask your veterinarian before making price-driven changes if your dog has special nutritional needs.
Which dog food should you feed?
Start with the package’s nutritional adequacy statement. For a healthy adult dog, look for a food labeled complete and balanced for adult maintenance or for all life stages. Puppies, pregnant or nursing dogs, and dogs with unusual activity or health needs may require a different match. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration explains that a complete-and-balanced claim is based on meeting an AAFCO nutrient profile or passing an AAFCO feeding trial: FDA: Complete and Balanced Pet Food. AAFCO also advises choosing food according to the animal’s species, life stage, and condition: AAFCO: Reading Labels.
Compare foods that meet your dog’s needs before comparing their cost. Terms such as “premium” do not establish that a food is more suitable. WSAVA notes that an ingredient list alone does not establish ingredient quality or the overall quality of the food; it recommends considering the manufacturer’s nutrition expertise and quality-control information as well: WSAVA Global Nutrition Guidelines.
How to compare the real cost of feeding
A large, inexpensive bag is not automatically the best value. The amount your dog should eat and the food’s calorie content affect how long the package lasts. Use this method to estimate the daily cost of each suitable option:

- Check the calories and feeding guide. Find the food’s calorie information and package feeding directions. Treat the directions as a starting point, not a guaranteed portion for every dog.
- Set an appropriate daily amount. Your dog’s needs depend on factors such as activity and body condition. A veterinarian can help determine a suitable amount when you are unsure.
- Estimate days per package. Divide the amount in the package by the amount your dog eats each day, using comparable units.
- Calculate cost per day. Divide the package price by the estimated number of days it lasts. When calorie information is available, comparing price per calorie can also help distinguish value between foods.
Ohio State’s nutrition service describes an economical food as one with a price per calorie that fits the household budget: Ohio State Companion Animal Nutrition Support Service. UK Pet Food likewise recommends calculating how long a bag lasts and its daily feeding cost: UK Pet Food: How Much Should I Feed My Dog?. Prices, package sizes, and products vary by location and over time, so there is no universally cheapest food.
Adjust portions instead of relying on the label alone
Feeding directions provide guidance, but an individual dog may need more or less depending on activity and condition. AAFCO notes that directions may need adjustment; consistently feeding too much or too little means the amount is not appropriate for that pet. Monitor your dog’s condition, measure meals, and consult your veterinarian if weight changes unexpectedly. Control treat and snack spending
Small extras can add to both food costs and calorie intake. The American Animal Hospital Association’s 2021 feeding-plan guidance recommends that at least 90% of total intake come from a complete-and-balanced diet, with treats, snacks, table food, and other items making up no more than 10%: AAHA Nutrition and Weight Management Guidelines.
One practical way to stay within that limit is to set aside a portion of your dog’s regular ration for rewards rather than adding separate treats. Cornell also suggests modest, low-calorie snacks when appropriate: Cornell: Dog Food.

Do not assume homemade food is a cheaper complete diet
Home-cooked meals can be deficient in nutrients even when they use appealing ingredients. If you want to prepare your dog’s food, ask a veterinarian to evaluate the recipe; Cornell advises using a vitamin and mineral mix designed for home-prepared diets when indicated. Chicken and rice is a temporary option for digestive upset, not a balanced long-term feeding plan: Cornell: Dog Food.
When to ask your veterinarian before changing food
Price should not be the deciding factor when a dog’s nutritional needs are unusual. Get veterinary guidance before selecting or changing food for a dog with a medical condition, a puppy, a pregnant or nursing dog, or a dog with unusual activity needs. AAFCO notes that life stage and condition affect nutritional needs. Cornell’s nutrition service works with veterinarians on balanced diets for dogs with health conditions, while Ohio State’s service reviews an animal’s history and provides written recommendations for commercial diets, treats, and supplements: Cornell Nutrition Service; Ohio State Companion Animal Nutrition Support Service.

A simple checklist for choosing between foods
- Does the label say the food is complete and balanced?
- Is it intended for your dog’s life stage and condition?
- What will the appropriate daily portion cost, rather than just the package?
- Can the manufacturer explain its nutrition expertise and quality controls?
- Is your dog maintaining an appropriate condition on the amount fed?
Ingredients should be considered in context, not rejected by name alone. In a 2013 Cornell article, clinical nutritionist Joseph Wakshlag noted that some by-products can be inexpensive protein sources with nutritional value. He also observed that grain-free foods may substitute ingredients such as rice or potato and cost more. These are points from that article, not a current price comparison for all foods: Cornell: Dog Food.
