Not all air fresheners are safe around cats. Essential-oil products and liquid potpourri are particular concerns: cats can be exposed by breathing fragrance, getting product on their skin or fur, or swallowing it while grooming. The safest choice is to avoid essential-oil diffusers and liquid potpourri around cats, keep all products and spills out of reach, and contact a veterinarian promptly if exposure occurs.
Why air fresheners can affect cats
“Air freshener” covers products with different ingredients and ways of dispersing fragrance, so there is no single risk level for the whole category. Some liquid potpourri and oil-based plug-ins may contain essential oils and corrosive substances that can poison a cat or burn its mouth and skin, according to VCA Animal Hospitals and Pet Poison Helpline.
Exposure can happen in several ways:
- Inhalation: Fragrance in the air can irritate the eyes and respiratory tract. Cats with pre-existing respiratory disease may be more vulnerable to this irritation, according to Pet Poison Helpline.
- Skin or fur contact: Oil or residue may get on a cat’s coat or skin. Some oils can be absorbed through the skin.
- Ingestion: A cat may lick a spill or product off its coat while grooming. Liquid potpourri can also cause harm if swallowed.
The risk depends on the ingredients, concentration, amount, and route of exposure. The available veterinary guidance does not establish a universally safe air concentration or a safe product ranking.
How product and device types differ
| Product or device | What matters for cats |
|---|---|
| Liquid potpourri and oil-based plug-ins | Some contain essential oils and corrosive substances. Ingestion or skin contact can be harmful; secure the device and refills and prevent spills. VCA Animal Hospitals; Pet Poison Helpline. |
| Room sprays | Spray can be inhaled, and residue can settle on surfaces or a cat’s coat and later be contacted or groomed off. Avoid spraying near cats or places they use. This is an exposure-route precaution, not a product-specific safety ranking. Pet Poison Helpline; ASPCA. |
| Passive oil diffusers, such as reed or heated diffusers | They do not disperse oil particles in the same way as active diffusers, but strong fragrance may irritate the respiratory tract. A spill, tip-over, or direct contact can create skin or ingestion exposure. Pet Poison Helpline. |
| Active oil diffusers, including nebulizing and ultrasonic devices | These can emit oil microdroplets or particles that settle on fur. A cat may absorb them through the skin or swallow them while grooming. Pet Poison Helpline. |
| Products marketed as “natural” or “pet-safe” | Marketing language does not establish safety. VCA advises avoiding diffused scented oils and notes that products marketed as pet-safe can still cause adverse reactions. VCA Animal Hospitals. |
Cat pheromone products are a separate category, sold in forms such as diffusers, sprays, and collars for behavior-related use. They are not general air fresheners or odor-control products; ask a veterinarian whether one is appropriate for your cat. VCA Animal Hospitals.

How to reduce risk and manage household odors
The lowest-risk approach is to avoid essential-oil diffusers and liquid potpourri where cats live. Store products and refills securely, clean spills before a cat can reach them, and avoid spraying fragrance near cats or their beds and other frequently used surfaces.
If you choose to use scented oils despite the risks, VCA advises using them only in a large, well-ventilated room, keeping the pet out, limiting use, securing bottles, cleaning spills, and promptly washing areas that contacted oil. These are harm-reduction steps, not a guarantee that exposure is safe. VCA Animal Hospitals.

For persistent pet odors, identify and clean the source and improve ventilation rather than masking the smell with fragrance. VCA suggests an air purifier as one possible way to help clean indoor air and reduce unwanted pet odors. That does not establish that a purifier removes every fragrance compound or makes air-freshener use safe. VCA Animal Hospitals.
