What do paw pads do?
1. They cushion each step
Paw pads are built to absorb impact as a cat walks, runs, or lands. Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences describes the pads as cushioning structures that help absorb shock. That cushioning matters because the paws repeatedly bear the cat’s weight.
2. They help with traction and balance
The pads give cats contact with the ground and help them keep their footing as they move. Grip and balance work together: a cat needs reliable contact with a surface to adjust its stance and navigate turns.
3. They protect feet from the terrain
Paw pads form a protective layer between a cat’s feet and the surfaces beneath them. They are not invulnerable, though; rough terrain, sharp objects, and other hazards can still cause cuts or abrasions.

4. They can help detect vibration

Do cats sweat through their paws?
5. Yes—cats have sweat glands on their feet
Cats can sweat through their paw pads. When a cat is excited or stressed, the feet may leave damp prints on a surface. Paw sweating has a limited cooling role; wet footprints do not mean that paws are the cat’s main way of regulating body temperature. 6. Grooming does most of the cooling work
Cats primarily help regulate temperature by grooming: as saliva evaporates from the coat, it can help cool the body. They may also pant or drool. Dr. Christina Gentry, a clinical assistant professor at Texas A&M’s College of Veterinary Medicine & Biomedical Sciences, explains: “With their limited ability to truly sweat — because their true sweat glands are located in few body areas — most thermoregulation is done via panting, ear flaps and coat length, color, or type.”
How are cat paws and claws different?
7. Cat paws are generally rounder than dog paws
Cat paws are generally rounder in shape than dogs’ paws. A cat’s foot also has a specialized way of moving: cats can retract their claws and bear weight on the balls and tips of their toes. These traits are part of how feline feet are adapted for movement.

8. Retractable claws help cats move quietly
A cat can draw its claws back rather than keeping them extended against the ground with every step. This lets the cat place its feet without the claws constantly contacting the walking surface. Claws also serve practical purposes: they help cats catch prey and defend themselves.

9. Scratching maintains claws and leaves scent
Scratching helps remove old outer layers of a claw and keep the claw sharp. It also leaves scent cues: cats have scent glands in their paws, so scratching can deposit olfactory information on a surface. Can paw pads get hurt?
10. Yes—and small injuries can affect a cat noticeably
A foreign object, a cut, or an abrasion from rough ground can injure a pad. Because pads bear weight, even slight damage can make walking uncomfortable or affect how a cat moves. The pads’ protective role does not make them immune to injury. Texas A&M’s overview of paw pads describes these injury risks.
Keep claws trimmed safely
Routine nail trimming can reduce claw damage and lower the risk of a claw growing into a foot pad. If you are unsure how to clip your cat’s nails, ask your veterinarian to demonstrate the technique.
