A Trello board helped animal shelters and rescue groups coordinate placements and transports for 164 cats across four states, according to a 2020 account by Best Friends Animal Society. The effort began with a call about Burke County Animal Services in North Carolina and grew into a 13-organization collaboration. Best Friends reported that the board let sending shelters list cats needing placement while receiving groups claimed animals in real time.
How the collaboration began
Best Friends CEO Julie Castle wrote that a call from Angela Rovetto to Audrey Lodato set the effort in motion to help Burke County Animal Services in North Carolina. Lodato contacted colleagues at Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, which recruited foster homes for 47 cats in one day.
The effort expanded beyond Burke County to cats from Alexander, Mitchell, and McDowell counties. Organizations in New York joined as receiving partners. With help from Bissell Pet Foundation, Copper Country Humane Society in Michigan and Lexington Humane Society in Kentucky agreed to receive 45 cats combined.
Best Friends’ September 15, 2020 account says 13 organizations ultimately helped secure placements or transport for 164 cats across North Carolina, New York, Michigan, and Kentucky. These are figures reported by a participating organization, not an independently audited count. Best Friends Animal Society’s account.

How the Trello board supported placement matching
Sending shelters could enter animals needing placement on a shared Trello board. Receiving organizations could then pull cats into their own columns, making the animals’ status visible to collaborators in real time.
Castle said coordinators found Trello easy to use, efficient, and accurate compared with organizing the effort through Facebook. She described the Facebook workflow as requiring more sorting and updating, with room for mistakes. Those are observations in Best Friends’ account, not results from an independent or measured comparison of the platforms.

What the account says about transports and outcomes
By the time the story was published, transports to New York destinations had been completed. The final legs to Kentucky and Michigan were scheduled for the Thursday after publication. Best Friends’ account does not establish whether those later trips went ahead as planned, so the scheduled legs should not be counted as confirmed completions.
Jett, described as Burke County’s longest-resident cat, was matched with an adopter through Dutchess County SPCA. The adopter was seeking a barn cat, and the story reported that Jett was acclimating to his new home.

What the story establishes—and what it does not
The case illustrates how a shared, live list can make animals needing placement visible to potential receiving partners, while keeping claims and status changes in one workflow. It also shows the distinct roles involved: foster recruitment, matching, receiving commitments, and transport coordination.
Best Friends’ 2020 account says cats made up 85% of the pets dying in Burke County’s shelter. That figure describes the situation reported in that story; it is not a current shelter statistic. The article is a detailed account from a participating organization, not independent verification of the totals or a controlled test of Trello’s advantages.
