Gizmo, a disabled cat evacuated from eastern Ukraine in October 2022, eventually found a home with an adopter experienced in caring for cats with mobility needs. Her story shows one way people can help: support organizations whose Ukraine connections and current needs are clearly documented, rather than assuming any donation or supply purchase will reach animals there.
Gizmo’s evacuation from eastern Ukraine
In October 2022, a volunteer working at a shelter evacuated Gizmo from eastern Ukraine. The disabled cat’s mobility needs made finding a placement more difficult, but she eventually joined an adopter experienced with disabled cats. The Cats.com account describes her as “super adaptable,” without identifying the rescuer by name. Cats.com’s story does not establish Gizmo’s current status or represent the experience of all animals in Ukraine.
How can I help cats in Ukraine?
A practical starting point is to support a rescue organization whose work and donation options you can verify. Cats.com recommends Homeward Trails Animal Rescue. The organization says it has international rescue partners in Ukraine, and describes itself as a nonprofit 501(c)(3) founded in 2002. It says it relies on donations and adoption fees and receives no government funding. Homeward Trails’ About page explains its organization and partnerships.
You can choose between a financial donation and selected in-kind goods. A monetary gift avoids guessing which supplies are useful; if you prefer to donate goods, check the organization’s current accepted-needs information first.

Donate money
Use the organization’s donation page to review its available ways to give. Donation options and needs can change, so rely on the current page rather than an old appeal or a third-party listing.
Give supplies only when they are requested
Homeward Trails lists wet or dry cat food, unscented cat litter and hard-sided cat carriers among selected goods it accepts. Its Gift Acceptance Policy cautions that donated items need to be useful to its mission and directs donors to current wishlists. Check that list before buying or dropping off supplies: an item the organization accepts is not necessarily needed now, or destined for Ukraine.

What other Ukraine cat-care work is documented?
FOUR PAWS’ Project Kishka is a separate example of organized cat-care work in Ukraine. A FOUR PAWS UK filing for the year ended December 31, 2023, says the project launched in October 2022 and focuses on stray cats, with local partners carrying out sterilization, vaccination and treatment work. The filing documents the program’s described scope at that time; it does not verify current operations or a present-day donation route. The charity filing is useful for understanding the project’s historical scope, not as confirmation of how to donate today.

- For the clearest documented connection in this story: Homeward Trails is the organization Cats.com recommends, and Homeward Trails says it has international rescue partners in Ukraine.
- For a specific requested item: consult Homeward Trails’ current wishlist and acceptance policy before purchasing. Do not assume an accepted item is currently needed or will be sent to Ukraine.
- For a Ukraine-focused program: Project Kishka’s scope is described in a 2023 charity filing, but verify current activity and donation instructions directly with FOUR PAWS before giving.
