Microchipping Pets: A Pet Parent’s Guide to Preparation, Not Panic

A microchip gives a scanner a unique ID number that works only when a registry record is current. Here is how to prepare for implantation, register the chip, and keep it useful.

A microchip gives a scanner a unique identification number. That number only helps when someone scans the pet and a registry record links it to you. The chip does not track your pet and does not guarantee recovery. Preparing well means understanding the implantation visit, registering the chip and keeping your contact details current, and having a veterinarian scan the chip once a year.

What a microchip does and does not do

A microchip is a small device implanted under the skin. When it is scanned, it supplies a unique identification number. It does not contain your name, phone number, or address, and it does not transmit location. As AAHA’s pet microchipping FAQ, updated May 19, 2026, puts it: “Microchips are identification devices, not GPS trackers.”

Recovery depends on a chain of steps, and each one has to work:

  1. Someone finds your pet and takes it to a veterinary clinic, shelter, or animal control facility that has a scanner.
  2. The scanner reads the chip’s identification number.
  3. That number is looked up in a registry.
  4. The registry provides contact details, but only if your record is current.

How a chip and a collar tag work together

A chip and a collar tag solve different problems. The tag works instantly for anyone who sees the collar. The chip works when the collar is gone, but only after a scan and a registry lookup.

Factor Microchip Collar ID tag
What it carries A unique identification number; contact details are kept in the registry record The contact details you put on the tag
Who can use it A person or facility with a scanner Anyone who sees the pet’s collar
Needs a scanner Yes No
Helps when the collar is missing Yes, if the chip is detected and the registry record is current No
Depends on current information Yes, the registry record must be updated Yes, the information on the tag must be correct

AAHA recommends keeping a collar ID tag with current contact details alongside the chip. A personalized pet ID tag with your current phone number is a practical companion to the chip. It does not replace the registry-backed identification the chip provides when the collar is absent.

The implantation visit

Implantation is a routine veterinary procedure, and it can often be done during a regular visit. If your pet is already going under anesthesia for another procedure, AVMA says it may be implanted then. Do not assume a separate surgery or anesthesia is always needed. Ask the clinic how it plans to handle your pet.

Questions to ask before the appointment

  • What should I expect for my pet, and can it be done during a visit we already have scheduled?
  • How will the chip number be recorded, and how will I receive it?
  • Which registry or registries will hold the record?
  • Can I confirm that the registry is accessible and that I can update my own contact details there? AAHA urges owners to check this before agreeing to implantation.
  • Can the clinic scan the chip at our annual visits?

This guide does not recommend a specific registry. Your veterinarian can explain which options are used in your area.

After implantation: registration steps

  1. Get the number and instructions in writing. Before you leave the clinic, obtain the chip number and the registry’s instructions, and save them with your pet’s records.
  2. Confirm the chip is registered. Make sure the registry the clinic named has your pet’s record, and complete any enrollment steps it requires.
  3. Check your contact details. Confirm that the record holds the phone number and address you want used if your pet is found.
  4. Update the registry promptly. Make the change after a move, a new phone number, or any other contact change.
  5. Keep the chip checked. Follow the annual scan schedule described below.

Keeping the chip detectable

AVMA recommends that a veterinarian scan the chip at least once a year to confirm it can still be detected and is functioning. Scanners do not detect every chip, so a microchip is not fail-safe. The annual scan is the check that catches a chip that has moved or stopped reading before you need it.

When there is no paperwork

If you do not have the chip records, a veterinarian or local shelter can scan your pet and retrieve the number. You can then use AAHA’s Microchip Registry Lookup. It accepts 9-, 10-, or 15-digit numbers and helps identify the registry to contact. The tool does not show owner contact information and cannot update a record, so contact the identified registry directly.

Why standards and registries vary in the US

There is no single national registry

The United States does not have one centralized registry. Separate services maintain records, so the registry that holds your pet’s number depends on the chip and the company that supplied it. Finding the number does not tell you which database holds the record; check the registry the clinic gave you.

The 15-digit format is the international standard

AAHA states that the 15-digit pet microchip is the international standard, and it references ISO 11784:1996 and ISO 11785:1996. Lookup tools still accept shorter numbers, which is why the lookup accepts 9-, 10-, or 15-digit entries.

Scanners and databases are not uniform

AAHA notes that the US has multiple microchip companies, several scanner technologies and frequencies, and multiple registration databases. It also states that the Animal Welfare Act does not authorize USDA-APHIS to mandate one national standard for privately owned pets. Do not assume every scanner or registry works the same way. Ask your veterinarian which scanner technologies are used in your area and whether the clinic can read your pet’s chip.

What the lost-dog figures show

AAHA’s article “7 Benefits of Microchipping Pets,” updated July 10, 2026, reports AVMA data showing that lost dogs with microchips were returned to their owners at 52.2%, compared with 21.9% for dogs without microchips. The comparison applies to dogs. It does not establish the same figures for cats or for all pets, and it does not predict what will happen to your dog.

AVMA’s pet-owner microchipping FAQ states: “For the vast majority of pets, the benefits of microchipping far outweigh the risks.”
