Watery eyes in cats—called epiphora—mean tears are overflowing, but they do not reveal why. Tears may be produced in excess or may not drain properly. Because causes range from irritation to injury or a blocked tear duct, a veterinarian may need to examine the eye to identify the problem and choose treatment.
Why are my cat’s eyes watering?
Tears normally lubricate the eye and drain through the nasolacrimal ducts. Watering occurs when tear production exceeds what can drain, or when drainage is impaired. One or both eyes may be affected, and the appearance of the tears alone cannot identify the cause.
Inflammation, infection, or irritation
Conjunctivitis is inflammation of the tissue lining the eyelids and covering part of the eye. It can affect one or both eyes and cause watery or colored discharge, redness, swelling, squinting, and sensitivity to bright light. Infection is one possible cause, but allergens, irritants, foreign material, eyelid abnormalities, and other eye conditions can also cause conjunctivitis. Injury or corneal disease
A scratch, foreign material, or corneal ulcer can lead to tearing and discomfort. A cloudy-looking cornea, discharge, or sensitivity to bright light can accompany an ulcer. These signs call for veterinary assessment rather than home diagnosis. Cornell’s corneal-ulcer guide explains that management depends on severity; a veterinarian may recommend an Elizabethan collar to prevent a cat from injuring the eye further while it heals.

Tear-duct blockage or facial anatomy
If tears cannot drain normally, they may spill onto the face. Hair or debris can interfere with drainage, and flat-faced anatomy may make drainage less effective. Chronic overflow can also result from an obstructed nasal tear duct. The Merck Veterinary Manual’s guide to nasal and tear-duct disorders in cats notes that duct obstruction is more common in Persian and Himalayan cats. Depending on the findings, a veterinarian may flush the duct; persistent or irreversible damage may sometimes require surgery.
Other possible causes
Abnormal eyelashes or eyelids, allergies, glaucoma, and other eye conditions can also contribute to excessive tearing or poor drainage. The VCA guide to eye discharge (epiphora) in cats covers these possibilities. A cat’s facial anatomy or breed may affect drainage, but it does not establish the cause of a particular episode.

What signs should I look for?
Watering may leave damp fur or reddish-brown staining beneath the eyes. Other signs help show whether the eye may be irritated or painful, but they do not pinpoint a diagnosis.
- Redness or swelling around the eye
- Discharge that is colored, thick, or otherwise abnormal
- Frequent blinking or squinting
- Holding the eye partly or fully closed
- Cloudiness of the eye or sensitivity to bright light
A painful, persistently closed, cloudy, injured, or markedly abnormal eye should be assessed promptly by a veterinarian. The appropriate timing depends on the signs and the cat’s condition; the sources do not establish a universal number of hours or days to wait.

How will a veterinarian find the cause?
The veterinarian will ask about the onset and pattern of the watering, then examine the eye and surrounding tissues. One or both eyes being affected, the type of discharge, and signs such as pain or cloudiness help guide the evaluation; they are not a substitute for it.

Treatment addresses the cause, not the watering in isolation. A blocked duct may be flushed; an ulcer, conjunctivitis, eyelid problem, or other underlying condition may need its own medical or surgical treatment. Since conjunctivitis can have several causes, there is no single medication appropriate for every case. Tear staining alone does not prove that an infection is present.

What can I safely do at home?
Keep the skin beneath the eyes clean and dry, and gently remove buildup. Avoid putting unapproved products or medications near the eyes. VCA cautions that some over-the-counter tear-stain products have not been shown effective in research trials and may harm the eyes; do not use products containing hydrogen peroxide near the eyes. Ask a veterinarian before using a product around your cat’s eyes.
A recovery collar is not a treatment for ordinary tearing. It may be recommended by a veterinarian in a specific situation, such as preventing self-trauma while a diagnosed corneal ulcer heals.
