Before a puppy arrives, make the areas it can reach safe, set up one small resting space with a way to limit access to the rest of the home, gather supplies and the puppy’s current food, and choose a veterinarian and collect the puppy’s records. The first days go best when they follow the puppy’s own routine rather than a fixed calendar. This guidance draws on the ASPCA’s puppy preparation checklist (published March 3, 2021), American Kennel Club (AKC) preparation articles, and the American Veterinary Medical Association’s (AVMA) consumer brochure Selecting a Dog. It is general and largely U.S.-oriented. Local rules and vaccine recommendations vary, so confirm them with your puppy’s veterinarian.
Make the home safe at puppy height
A puppy explores with its mouth, so the reliable approach is to remove hazards from its reach rather than expecting training to stop every grab. Walk each room the puppy will be allowed into and look at it from floor level, since that is where most of the risk sits.
Indoor rooms
- Medications, vitamins, and cleaning products: move them into closed storage, including cabinets under sinks and laundry areas.
- Cords and cables: secure them, cover them, or route them out of reach.
- Shoes, socks, and valuables: keep them in closed spaces or on high shelves.
- Garbage and recycling: use containers with lids or store them inside a cabinet.
Plants and the yard
Check every plant the puppy can reach indoors and out, and verify each one against a veterinary or poison-control source before arrival. Walk the yard as well. Look at fence gaps, gate latches, places where the puppy could squeeze under or climb, and any standing water, tools, or chemicals stored at ground level.
Set up a resting area and limit access
Pick one or a few safe areas for the first days instead of opening the whole house. The goal is a place where the puppy can rest and where you can see it.

The crate
AKC advises that a crate should let the puppy stand up and turn around comfortably. Choose a size that suits the size the puppy is expected to reach, and check the fit once the puppy is home rather than assuming the first size will last. A crate is a resting space, not a place to leave the puppy for long stretches.
Gates and exercise pens
Where access to other rooms, stairs, or the kitchen needs to be restricted, use gates or an exercise pen. AKC recommends gates for this purpose. Gates limit access; they do not supervise. Keep an adult watching the puppy while it is out of its resting area.

- A properly sized crate, plus gates or an exercise pen if the layout calls for them
- Food bowls and water bowls
- Puppy food that matches what the puppy is already eating (see the next section)
- A collar and leash, and identification such as an ID tag
- Safe chew toys sized for a puppy
- Grooming tools suitable for the coat type
- Waste bags and cleanup supplies for accidents
Buy the crate, gates, and collar after you know the puppy’s expected size, and confirm the food choice with the veterinarian rather than switching brands on the way home. If the breeder, shelter, or rescue can provide a familiar towel or blanket that carries the litter’s or the puppy’s scent, it can help during the first night.

Get the feeding routine and records from the current caregiver
Ask the breeder, shelter, or rescue for the information you need to keep the puppy’s routine steady:
- The name and brand of the food the puppy eats now, and how much it gets per meal.
- The feeding schedule, including the number of meals per day and the times.
- The daily routine: when the puppy sleeps, goes outside, and plays.
- Vaccination and deworming records, with dates.
- Any medical history, including previous illness, treatments, or medications.
Keep the current food on hand for the transition. Any change to diet or care should be discussed with your veterinarian first.

Choose a veterinarian before the puppy arrives
Identify a veterinary practice before you bring the puppy home. Waiting until a problem appears makes it harder to pick a clinic calmly.
What to check at a practice
- How easy it is to reach, including travel time from your home
- How clearly the staff communicates and answers questions
- The cleanliness of the facility
- What happens after hours and in emergencies, including which practice or emergency hospital covers those times
AKC specifically asks prospective clients to consider the clinic’s emergency setup. Ask this question directly and write down the answer and the emergency phone number.

Schedule the first visit and bring the breeder’s, shelter’s, or rescue’s records. AKC also suggests bringing a fecal sample to that visit. Be ready to ask about vaccines, parasite control, nutrition, microchipping, and when it is safe to start outings. Those answers depend on the puppy’s history and on local conditions, so they should come from the veterinarian who examines the puppy.

What to ask at the first veterinary visit
AVMA’s consumer brochure Selecting a Dog describes the value of the veterinarian in these terms: “Not only is your veterinarian best qualified to evaluate the health of your new companion, but he/she can advise you about proper immunization, parasite control, nutrition, sterilization, socialization, training, grooming and other care that may be necessary to protect the health of your new pet.”
AKC, in its first-visit guidance, cites AVMA’s definition of the veterinary-client-patient relationship: your veterinarian knows your pet well enough to be able to diagnose and treat any medical conditions your animal develops. Building that relationship starts with the first visit, so bring a list of questions and a notebook.

Early socialization can begin with the breeder, and it continues at home. Public outings, such as busy streets, shared dog areas, or pet stores, should follow the veterinarian’s safety advice for this particular puppy. Some owners find puppy training or socialization classes helpful; ask the veterinarian whether a class is appropriate and what vaccination or health checks the class expects before enrollment.

Plan the first days
Schedule time for the transition rather than expecting the puppy to adapt on day one. Build in time for:
- Settling in: a quiet first evening, a short walk through the house, and a rest in the resting area.
- Feeding and toilet routines: meals and bathroom trips at consistent times, with the same food the puppy already eats.
- Gentle handling: short sessions for touching paws, ears, and the mouth, so later vet exams feel routine.
- Supervision: an adult available to watch the puppy whenever it is out of its resting area.
Treat these as a starting structure. The pace of the transition varies from puppy to puppy, and a veterinarian can advise if the puppy is eating poorly, toileting unusually, or seems unwell.
