Haggis is a three-legged cat whose upright posture, dramatic front-paw wave, and unusually loud purr have earned him a dinosaur comparison. According to a Cats.com feature published June 3, 2026, his story is one of adaptation rather than limitation, and it offers a useful look at what a tripod cat’s daily life can involve.
Why Haggis gets compared to a dinosaur
The comparison comes from three behaviors described in the article and reported by his owner, rather than from any single trait.
- The “T-rex” pose. Haggis stands on his hind legs and waves a front paw to get attention. His owner says he repeats this if petting stops before he is ready to be finished.
- Sleeping upright. The article describes him sitting up to sleep rather than curling into a loaf or lying flat.
- A very loud purr. According to his owner, it is loud enough to drown out the television, and she says it sounds like a dinosaur.
None of these behaviors is described as unusual for a healthy cat by itself. The article presents them as the characteristics that make Haggis memorable to the people who live with him.
What happened to his leg
The article reports that Haggis broke his shoulder in 2018 after jumping off a couch. His veterinarian found the break could not be repaired surgically and recommended amputation. Because the account comes from the article and his owner, it is best read as their description of events rather than an independently verified medical record.

His owner says Haggis is still the fastest cat in the house, which suggests that losing a front leg did not stop him from being active.
Does a tripod cat need special care?
The answer in the article is mixed, and it is worth keeping both parts of it in view.

- The owner’s view: tripod cats do not necessarily require special care.
- The article’s caution: some tripod cats may need help as they adapt, or if they struggle to get around.
The article also places weight management at the center of its guidance. Its reasoning is that extra body weight can put additional strain on the limbs a tripod cat has left. That is the article’s own care advice; it is not presented there as a formal veterinary protocol, so if your cat has lost a limb, ask your veterinarian what weight and activity targets suit that cat.
Optional home adjustments for mobility
The article suggests a few home changes for cats that need mobility support. They are presented as ideas to consider, not as requirements for every tripod cat. The most useful way to think about them is by the access problem each one addresses.

| Access problem | Adjustment named in the article | What it is meant to solve |
|---|---|---|
| Getting into the litter box | A low-sided litter box | Lets the cat step in without lifting a body weight over a high rim on three legs |
| Slipping on hard floors | Carpet runners on hard flooring | Gives paws more traction along frequently used paths |
| Reaching a place to rest | Low-level resting spots | Reduces the number and height of jumps needed to get comfortable |
The article does not name a brand or model for any of these, and it does not say every tripod cat needs all three. Choose based on what you actually see your cat struggling with.
Pausing during petting
Haggis’s owner notes that his dinosaur-style wave is a request for more attention. The article suggests a simple habit that works for any cat: pause during petting and watch what happens next. If the cat asks for more by pressing into your hand, nudging you, or waving a paw, continue. If it moves away, let it go. This gives you a reliable read on what your cat enjoys without relying on guesswork.
