The creature was a tardigrade, a tiny animal also known as a water bear. Named Paradoryphoribius chronocaribbeus, it was found preserved in Dominican amber dating to about 16 million years ago. Its significance is less that it rewrites tardigrade history than that it adds an exceptionally rare fossil data point from the Cenozoic Era.
What creature was found in the amber?
The fossil is Paradoryphoribius chronocaribbeus, a tardigrade. Tardigrades are minute animals with eight legs; they are often called water bears or moss piglets. Harvard’s 2021 account describes them as the smallest-known animals with legs. Harvard Gazette
The amber specimen comes from the Dominican Republic. The New Jersey Institute of Technology’s October 2021 announcement dates the amber to about 16 million years ago, during the Miocene epoch of the Cenozoic Era. NJIT research release
Why is this fossil unusual?
Tardigrades are tiny, and living species are associated with habitats where liquid water is available. A fossil preserved in amber is therefore an unusual and valuable glimpse of an animal rarely represented in the fossil record. NJIT’s 2021 announcement counted this as the third formally named tardigrade fossil and the first from the Cenozoic. The two previously described fossils came from Cretaceous amber.

| Fossil-record context | What the 2021 accounts establish |
|---|---|
| Earlier described fossils | Two named tardigrade fossils from Cretaceous amber; the cited accounts do not give their precise ages or amber localities. |
| Paradoryphoribius chronocaribbeus | From Dominican amber dated to about 16 million years ago, in the Miocene; the first tardigrade fossil reported from the Cenozoic. |
The Cenozoic began about 66 million years ago, according to Harvard’s 2021 account. Harvard Gazette The fossil thus represents a later interval than the Cretaceous examples, but three named fossils cannot provide a continuous timeline of the group’s evolution.
What can scientists learn from it?
Researchers compared the fossil’s anatomical features with those of living tardigrade groups. That comparison gives scientists another point of evidence for considering relationships and evolutionary history, as the NJIT announcement explains. It does not, by itself, settle how tardigrades evolved or fill the gaps in their sparse fossil record.

- Safety Material: The high transparency plastic microscope slide is cleaned in advance so that it’s non-toxic, no stains, scratches and any bacteria. there is no danger of sharp corners on the fingers because the microscope slides have smooth edges
- Classification Label: The microscope slides with specimens is well prepared, well labeled, it’s easy to classify and collect for permanent storage&moisture-proof
- Clear Observation: Stereo microscopy with top and bottom lights can provide the best microscopic image which is clean , clear, and well-dyed. cell tissue slides will stimulate young children and slides with insect parts will be more interesting for them
- Amazing Quantity: 48pcs prepared microscope slide of plant ins_ect animal tissue for basic biology education, the kid's specimen can provide students or family educator interesting educational scientific tool and provid excellent teaching aids for biology
- Perfect Science Gift: A good collection of microscope slides, gift wrapping, is a great microscope accessory gift for close-up biology course for a young family member who is just beginning to do biological research
The contrast between the fossil count and living diversity illustrates the challenge: the same 2021 NJIT release reported more than 1,300 living tardigrade species, while counting only three formally named fossil species after this discovery. Those figures describe the release’s 2021 account, not a current census.

The discovery is striking because a minute animal rarely preserved in the fossil record survived in amber and could be studied closely enough to describe as a new species. The headline should not be read as evidence that scientists were astonished by a sudden reversal of established evolutionary knowledge. The documented importance is the specimen’s rarity and its contribution to the fossil record.
