A Century-Old Harpoon Fragment Was Found in a Bowhead Whale—What It Really Tells Us

A bomb-lance fragment recovered from a bowhead whale harvested in Alaska in 2007 was likely made between 1879 and 1885. That makes the weapon more than a century old when found—but it does not reveal the whale’s exact age. Separate eye-lens research estimated one bowhead at 211 years old, with substantial uncertainty; that was a different whale.

How old was the whale with the harpoon in it?

Scientists did not determine an exact age for the whale that carried the fragment. The whale was harvested in 2007, and researchers identified the embedded object as part of a historic bomb-lance—a whaling weapon. George and Bockstoce concluded that this weapon type was likely manufactured between 1879 and 1885.

The date belongs to the weapon, not the whale. Because the fragment was embedded in the whale when it was harvested, it indicates that the animal survived for decades after the weapon was made. But the evidence does not show when the whale was born, when it was struck, or how long it lived afterward. The primary artifact study describes two weapon fragments recovered from bowheads; the 2007 find is one of them. George and Bockstoce’s 2008 study

Was the whale 211 years old?

No such age was established for the whale with the 2007 fragment. The often-cited estimate of 211 years came from a separate 1999 study of bowhead eye lenses. George and colleagues successfully estimated ages for 42 of 48 samples; four of those estimates exceeded 100 years. One was 211 years, with a standard error of 35 years. That is a statistical estimate—not a directly observed lifespan—and it belongs to a different animal from the whale carrying the fragment. George et al.’s 1999 study

How do scientists estimate a bowhead whale’s age?

Eye-lens chemistry estimates age

In the 1999 study, researchers used aspartic-acid racemization in the eye lens. In the lens nucleus, which is metabolically inert, the amino acid gradually changes from its L form to its D form. Researchers measured the ratio and used it to infer elapsed time. This method can produce age estimates for whales, but the result is not a birth record, and uncertainty matters—especially for very old estimates.

Historic weapons provide a different kind of clue

A dated weapon fragment can show that a whale survived long enough for a weapon made in a particular period to be found embedded in it. It does not directly measure the whale’s age. The two methods therefore offer complementary evidence: lens chemistry estimates age, while an artifact can constrain a minimum span of survival after its manufacture.

NOAA Fisheries summarizes the eye-lens evidence this way: “Studying eye lenses, scientists confirm that bowhead whales can live for more than 100 years.” NOAA Fisheries, Bowhead Whales in Alaska

Are bowhead whales Earth’s oldest living creatures?

The evidence supports calling bowheads exceptionally long-lived, but it does not establish them as the oldest living creatures on Earth. The cited studies focus on bowhead whales; they do not compare them with every long-lived animal, plant, fungus, or clonal organism. “Among the longest-lived mammals” is a more careful description than a universal record claim.

A 2024 review discusses another, separate comparison: a bowhead eye-lens estimate of 133 years corresponded closely with a whaling artifact dated to about 120 years old. That example is distinct from both the 2007 fragment and the 211-year estimate. 2024 review in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences

What the harpoon story establishes—and what it doesn’t

  • Established: A bomb-lance fragment was found in a bowhead harvested in 2007, and the weapon type was likely made between 1879 and 1885.
  • Supported: Bowheads can live for more than a century, according to NOAA’s summary of eye-lens research.
  • Not established: The fragment alone does not give the whale an exact age, and it was not the source of the separate 211-year estimate.
  • Not established: These findings do not prove bowheads are the oldest living organisms overall.

The North Slope Borough’s age-estimation overview also reports an eye-lens estimate above 200 years, while keeping the distinction between age estimates and the artifact case clear.
