If your cat’s belly feels firm, touch alone can’t tell you why. A fuller or newly enlarged belly may have several causes, some serious. Know which signs need emergency care, and contact a veterinarian about a new, persistent, or worsening change.
When a firm belly is an emergency
Contact an emergency veterinarian or your cat’s veterinarian for immediate direction if your cat has any of these signs:

- Difficulty breathing
- Repeated or continuous vomiting or diarrhea
- Collapse, severe weakness, or marked pain
- Signs that suggest a urinary or intestinal blockage
A male cat that cannot urinate may have a urinary obstruction and can become critically ill. An unspayed female with a uterine infection may also need emergency care. Do not wait to see whether a firm belly resolves if these warning signs are present.

Arrange veterinary advice for a belly that is newly firm or enlarged, remains that way, or is getting bigger—even if your cat seems otherwise stable. The change can reflect serious disease, but there is no single appointment deadline that fits every cat. Call your clinic and describe what you see so they can advise how soon your cat should be examined.

Abdominal enlargement means a belly looks fuller or larger than usual, sometimes bulging beyond the cat’s normal outline. Veterinary sources also use “abdominal distension” for a swollen abdomen. These terms describe an appearance, not its cause; a firm feel does not establish that the belly is distended or explain why it changed.
What can cause a fuller or firm-feeling belly?
Possible explanations include intestinal parasites, obesity, pregnancy, enlarged organs, fluid, tumors, and gastrointestinal or urinary problems. Heart or liver disease and feline infectious peritonitis are among the conditions associated with abdominal enlargement. In kittens, intestinal parasites are one possible cause. A sudden bloated appearance is not necessarily weight gain: fluid buildup is another possibility, including fluid associated with cancer, but that does not mean cancer is the likeliest explanation.

The veterinarian will ask about your cat’s history and perform a physical examination, which may include palpating the abdomen. Depending on those findings, initial tests may include a complete blood count, blood chemistry, and urinalysis. X-rays, ultrasound, targeted blood tests, heart evaluation, fluid analysis, or sampling of a mass or enlarged organ may also be considered. These are possible parts of a workup, not tests every cat needs.
