For a chance to see wild Japanese macaques, three very different parks stand out: Jigokudani Yaen-Koen in Nagano, Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama in Kyoto, and Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden in Oita. Jigokudani is the famous snow monkey park, but its monkeys may not appear and hot-spring bathing is a seasonal possibility, not a scheduled show. Arashiyama combines macaques with a Kyoto hillside walk and city views; Takasakiyama offers a more organized viewing area with staff-managed feeding gatherings. The right choice depends on your itinerary, walking comfort and willingness to accept that wildlife is unpredictable.

Which wild monkey park in Japan should you choose?

Park Setting and experience Access and planning Best fit
Jigokudani Yaen-Koen, Nagano Mountain forest habitat; known for wild macaques and occasional winter hot-spring bathing. A 25–40 minute forest walk from Kanbayashi Onsen, according to the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO). Seasonal hours and admission are listed by the park; weather and animal behavior can affect opening or sightings. Travelers seeking a mountain wildlife outing who can manage the walk and accept uncertain sightings.
Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama, Kyoto Hillside macaque park with views over Kyoto and a designated feeding arrangement at the visitor-center hut. An uphill walk is required. Kyoto City lists the park about a five-minute walk from Hankyu Arashiyama Station, but check the park directly for current schedule and admission. Kyoto visitors who want to add a wildlife stop to a city itinerary.
Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden, Oita Free-roaming macaques gather in a designated area; staff explain their behavior, and the site includes a Monkey Museum. Between Oita and Beppu, with bus access from both cities. The tourism authority lists feeding gatherings every 30 minutes and an optional rail service; confirm current operations. Visitors already in Oita or Beppu who prefer an organized viewing area.

These are three established destinations, not an exhaustive list of places in Japan where macaques can be seen. They are better compared by location, walking demands, feeding rules and wildlife uncertainty than by promises of close encounters or animal counts.

What to expect at Jigokudani Yaen-Koen

Wild macaques, not a guaranteed performance

Jigokudani’s monkeys are not kept behind fences. The park says staff use a regulated feeding routine to attract them, but they may not appear during opening hours; sightings are particularly sporadic in autumn. Hot-spring bathing is associated with winter cold and is not guaranteed on a winter visit or at any particular time of day. JNTO also notes that Japanese macaques usually do not like getting wet. See the park’s official guide and JNTO’s Jigokudani visitor information.

Walk, weather and accessibility

From Kanbayashi Onsen, expect a forest walk of roughly 25–40 minutes, as estimated by JNTO; this is an indicative approach time, not a live transit or trail guarantee. The park describes the approach as unpaved and not wheelchair- or cart-accessible. It recommends sneakers or hiking shoes in warmer seasons, and rubber or snow boots in winter; simple crampons are suggested for winter safety. Check local conditions before setting out. JNTO also gives approximate bus journey times to Kanbayashi Onsen of around 40 minutes from Nagano, 30 minutes from Nozawa Onsen, 30 minutes from Shiga Kogen and 10 minutes from Yudanaka or Shibu Onsen; these are not live timetables. The park’s access guidance and visitor guide provide park details.

Hours, admission and rules

The park lists hours of 8:30 a.m.–5 p.m. from April through October and 9 a.m.–4 p.m. from November through March, and asks visitors to arrive 30 minutes before closing. Its listed admission is ¥800 for adults and ¥400 for children, with a fee revision announced to take effect December 1, 2026. Since hours, fees and temporary closures can change, check the official guide before travel. The park is open year-round by schedule, but severe weather, natural disasters or animal behavior may lead to shortened hours or closure.

At Jigokudani, do not feed or touch monkeys, approach closely or stare directly into their eyes. Pets are not allowed, and drones and selfie-stick photography are prohibited. Standard photography and video are allowed under the posted rules, including flash, but do not put cameras close to animals or into the bath. Check the park’s visitor rules for details.

What to expect at Arashiyama Monkey Park Iwatayama

Arashiyama is a Kyoto hillside park where wild Japanese macaques can be seen alongside views over the city. Reaching the park involves an uphill walk, so allow time and wear shoes suited to the climb. Kyoto City lists the entrance at 61 Arashiyama Genrokuzan-cho, about a five-minute walk from Hankyu Arashiyama Station. Its visitor page lists hours of 9 a.m.–4 p.m., irregular closures, adult admission of ¥550 and child admission of ¥250; because destination listings can lag, confirm schedule and fees with the Kyoto City information page and the park’s official site before visiting.

Feeding and safety rules

Unlike Jigokudani, Arashiyama permits feeding only at the mountain hut, using food purchased there. Do not bring food to feed the monkeys or feed them directly. The park asks visitors to keep about two meters away, and not to touch or stare at the animals. Pets and drones are prohibited, and visitors must not reach out with selfie sticks. Review the park’s official rules before your visit.

What to expect at Takasakiyama Natural Zoological Garden

At Mount Takasaki, between Oita and Beppu, macaques roam freely and gather in a designated area. Visit Oita describes a population of roughly 1,000 wild macaques and feeding events every 30 minutes, with staff on hand to explain behavior. The site also has a Monkey Museum, gift shop and Monkey Chaya. The gathering schedule is an attraction, not a guarantee that every individual monkey will be close to visitors. JNTO notes that visitors must not feed, touch or stare into the macaques’ eyes. See Visit Oita’s Takasakiyama listing and JNTO’s visitor information.

Visit Oita lists hours of 9 a.m.–5 p.m., last entry at 4:30 p.m., and no scheduled closure days, though temporary closures occur. It also lists bus access from JR Oita and JR Beppu stations and an optional Sarukko Rail round trip for ¥110. These are changeable facility and transport details: check the tourism authority’s current page for admission prices, service and access before departure. JNTO also describes the Sarukko Rail as an optional way to reach the viewing area.

How to choose based on your trip

  • Choose Jigokudani if Nagano fits your route, you want a forest-and-mountain outing, and you are comfortable with an unpaved approach and the possibility of seeing no monkeys. Winter offers the possibility of bathing behavior, not a promised spectacle.
  • Choose Arashiyama if you are already in Kyoto and can fit an uphill walk into the day. Its feeding arrangement is limited to food bought and used at the designated hut.
  • Choose Takasakiyama if you are based in Oita or Beppu and would value staff-managed viewing gatherings, museum facilities and bus access.

For anyone searching “where to see monkeys in Japan,” the practical difference is not which park guarantees the best encounter—none can guarantee wild-animal behavior—but which setting, approach and visitor rules suit your trip.
