A potbellied pig can be a good companion for an owner who has secure space, time every day, a vet who treats pigs, and permission to keep one where they live. For most people in apartments, dense housing or areas zoned against livestock, the answer is no. Do not rely on a “mini” or “micro” label to predict adult size. UC Davis’s veterinary emergency guidance describes mini and potbelly pigs as ranging from 30 to 200 pounds.
Is a potbellied pig right for you?
A veterinary article indexed on PubMed cautions that housing, care and training can be harder for the average person than with traditional pets. It identifies inadequate diet and housing as common sources of both health and behavior problems. Texas A&M’s veterinary school quotes a faculty veterinarian who names time and the financial capacity for veterinary treatment as marks of a good candidate. (I could not open the Texas A&M page itself, so treat that as a general framing and not a detailed claim.)
The Merck Veterinary Manual describes potbellied pigs as territorial, curious and prone to chewing. It says indoor pigs need a defined space of their own. It also states that pigs are not suitable pets for apartment dwellers or for residents of high-density condominium complexes. Lease and HOA terms and local rules can be stricter still.
A realistic owner can say yes to each of these:
- I have a secure indoor area, an outdoor pen, or both.
- I accept rooting, chewing and damage to lawns, gardens, carpets and blankets.
- I can find and afford a veterinarian comfortable treating pigs.
- I have checked zoning, animal-control and property rules for my address.
- I can feed a measured, balanced diet for years and resist overfeeding.
How big will a “mini” or “micro” pig get?
There is no reliable promise. The California Veterinary Emergency Team at UC Davis (November 2024) says: “Mini pigs or potbelly pigs can be a wide variety of sizes (30lbs up to 200lbs).” That range is broad, and it is not a prediction for any one animal. A piglet’s looks and a seller’s marketing label say little about adult weight. Plan your housing, fencing, flooring and budget for a pig at the heavy end, and ask a pig-experienced veterinarian to assess the specific animal.

Housing: indoors, outdoors or both
Merck notes that housing may be outdoors, indoors, or both. The right choice depends on your property, climate and the pig’s needs for rooting, shelter, shade and clean water.
Outdoor housing
- Space: Merck recommends a large pen of at least 50 square feet per pig. This is a care recommendation from one source and not a legal minimum.
- Shelter: provide a structure such as a large dog house.
- Fencing: secure it in the ground, because pigs root.
- Hygiene: remove feces daily and add fresh dirt as needed. Relocate the pen periodically to limit waste buildup and give the pig fresh ground.
Indoor housing
- Set up a defined area with separate sleeping/eating and elimination spots.
- A large litter box with a lowered entry side may work. Merck names dry dirt or pine shavings as non-toxic litter options.
- Protect valuable or unsafe items, because pigs are curious and chew.
Comparing the options
| Factor | Indoor | Outdoor | Mixed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rooting outlet | Needs a designated area, or carpets and blankets suffer | Natural, but lawns and gardens are affected | Direct rooting outdoors, protect indoors |
| Temperature control | Easier to keep clean, dry and draft-free | Needs shelter and shade, and heat management | Pig can move between both |
| Waste | Litter box maintenance | Daily removal and pen rotation | Both routines |
| Permissions | Lease, HOA and local rules | Zoning and fencing rules | Both |
Rooting and temperature
Rooting is normal behavior. Merck says owners should expect and tolerate it, whether in lawns and gardens or in blankets, carpets and other items indoors. You can limit damage with fencing or a designated rooting area, but you cannot remove the urge.

Merck describes adults as usually comfortable at about 65°F to 75°F (18°C to 24°C). It says temperatures above 85°F (29.5°C) are stressful, and that prolonged high heat with humidity may be fatal. It advises clean, dry, draft-free conditions. These figures are veterinary guidance, and individual animals and climates vary, so ask your vet about heat plans such as shade and cooling.
Diet and water
- Water: fresh water should be available at all times.
- Ration: Merck describes starter, grower and maintenance rations for potbellied pigs. It advises feeding the recommended amount for body weight and age, split into two or more meals at consistent times. Balanced diets support health and help prevent obesity.
- Mini-pig chow: UC Davis CVET’s November 2024 emergency guidance recommends a specific mini-pig chow and a protein range of 12–14%.
- No salt block: the same guidance warns that pigs are at high risk of salt toxicity.
The UC Davis document is written for emergency response, so confirm the ration, portion and target weight with your pig’s veterinarian. They should tailor these to age, body condition, activity and health.

Veterinary care
Find a veterinarian experienced with pigs before you bring one home. Many practices see only dogs and cats. Merck identifies routine hoof maintenance and special dental care as ongoing needs.

- Pigs feel full while controlling growth.
- Mini-pellet form for minimal dust and wastage.
- Formulated with Yucca Schidigera Extract to help control odor.
- Organic selenium and flaxseed meal to support immune function and health.
Signs that need prompt veterinary contact
UC Davis lists these urgent warning signs for swine. The list is for triage, not diagnosis:
- Inability to rise, or significant lameness
- Eye swelling or discharge
- Wounds or trauma
- Difficulty breathing, significant coughing, or liquid diarrhea
- Failure to eat
- Straining to urinate or defecate
- Neurologic signs such as circling or stumbling
Legal checks before you buy or adopt
Merck advises checking zoning first. Many ordinances classify potbellied pigs as livestock and may prohibit them in residential areas. Verify city or county zoning, animal-control rules, property restrictions and transport rules for your address.

England
GOV.UK guidance (last updated 12 July 2023, so recheck it) says a pet pig keeper in England must:
- obtain a county parish holding number;
- register with APHA for a herd mark;
- keep movement records and an annual inventory;
- identify the pig before moving it from its premises;
- obtain a licence to walk it outside its home or premises.
Scotland and Wales have separate guidance, and these rules do not establish requirements for any other country. The DEFRA pig welfare code applies to England. It sets out needs including a suitable environment and diet, natural behavior, appropriate company or separation, and protection from pain, injury, suffering and disease. It is a code of practice and does not replace veterinary advice.

No comparable national summary is given here for other countries. Contact your local planning or zoning office and animal-control authority, and get permission in writing if you rent or live under an HOA.
