“Teacup pig” is a sales label, not a reliable breed or adult-size guarantee. A piglet advertised that way may grow into a substantial animal that needs secure space, a complete diet, opportunities to root and explore, and veterinary care for many years. Plan for the adult pig—not the piglet in a photo—and check local rules before bringing one home.

Do teacup pigs always stay small?

No. Merck Veterinary Manual says “teacup” has no strict definition, and Best Friends Animal Society notes it is not recognized by a breed standard. A piglet’s size, or a seller’s label, cannot reliably predict how large that individual will become.

Published size estimates vary because sources describe different categories of miniature and potbellied pigs. Merck says miniature pet pigs commonly weigh 45.5–68.2 kg (100–150 lb) and can weigh more. Best Friends gives a range of 100–200 lb for most potbellied pigs. VCA Animal Hospitals describes Vietnamese potbellied pigs as typically 70–150 lb, with some reaching 200 lb. These are reference ranges, not a forecast for a particular pig; genetics, crossbreeding, nutrition, and individual development all matter.

Growth can take years. Merck says miniature pigs rarely reach full size before two to three years. Best Friends says pigs may reach full height around three years and continue filling out until four to five years; VCA says pigs reach about half their adult size and weight by one year but may continue growing until four to five. Meet adult pigs and speak with a pig-experienced veterinarian or rescue before deciding whether you can provide a suitable lifelong home.

How long do mini pigs live?

Expect a long-term commitment, while recognizing that lifespan estimates are not guarantees. Merck estimates miniature pigs live approximately 8–20 years, typically 10–15. VCA gives potbellied pigs a lifespan of 14–21 years, with an average of 15–18.

Can mini pigs live in your house?

Some pigs can spend time indoors, but a home-only setup may not meet their needs. Best Friends says pigs need outdoor time to root, sniff, and explore. VCA recommends a pig-safe indoor room with toys and a rooting box, plus secure outdoor fencing and adequate bedding. Their recommendations are veterinary guidance, not a substitute for local rules or advice tailored to an individual pig.

Space, rooting, and enrichment

Plan for a secure area where the pig can move, explore, and express normal rooting and play behaviours. An indoor rooting area or pig rooting box and suitable toys can add enrichment; check dimensions, materials, and safety for the specific pig rather than assuming any product is appropriate. Outdoor fencing must be secure enough to contain the animal.

Heat, shade, and shelter

Pigs do not sweat effectively and can overheat. VCA gives an adult comfort range of about 60–75°F (15–24°C) and advises shade and protection from direct sun outdoors. Arrange appropriate shelter and cooling for your climate, and ask a pig-experienced veterinarian what is suitable for the individual animal.

What should a teacup pig eat?

Feed a complete diet appropriate to the pig’s age and condition, with a veterinarian’s guidance on the individual animal’s needs. Do not underfeed a pig to preserve a small appearance. Merck warns that nutritional stunting and selection for very small size may be associated with health problems. Best Friends likewise cautions that restrictive feeding can fail to support a growing pig and may contribute to medical and food-seeking behavioural problems. Appearance alone cannot establish whether a pig is healthy or receiving enough food.

What should you check before adopting or buying a mini pig?

Assess the actual care commitment and the uncertainty—not just the label or asking price. Use this checklist before you agree to take a pig home:

  • Adult size uncertainty: ask what is known about the pig’s background and development, but do not treat a piglet’s size or its parents’ size as a dependable adult-size prediction.
  • Time commitment: consider that growth may continue for several years and that published lifespan estimates span roughly a decade or more.
  • Housing and activity: make sure you can provide secure space, enrichment, rooting opportunities, suitable bedding, and protection from heat.
  • Veterinary access: identify a veterinarian experienced with pigs and discuss routine and individual care needs before adoption.
  • Diet and welfare: ask what the pig is currently fed and be cautious of anyone recommending restriction to keep it tiny.
  • Local rules: check zoning and any livestock registration, identification, or movement requirements that apply where you live.

What laws apply to keeping a mini pig?

Requirements depend on where you live. In England, Defra says pet pig keepers must follow the same traceability and welfare rules as pig farmers. Its guidance describes obtaining a county parish holding number, registering with APHA for a herd mark, identifying pigs before movement, recording or reporting movements, and getting a licence to walk a pig outside the premises. It also prohibits feeding pigs catering waste from domestic or commercial kitchens and generally prohibits animal-origin material. Check the current official guidance before acting.

England’s government pig welfare code says the Animal Welfare Act applies to domesticated pigs, including animals called micro pigs, teacup piglets, or mini pigs. It sets out welfare needs such as a suitable environment and diet, the ability to exhibit normal behaviour, appropriate social housing, and protection from pain, suffering, injury, and disease. These are England-specific examples, not universal rules; elsewhere, consult the relevant local authority or government guidance before bringing a pig home.
