Visitors, park employees and security cameras continued to place her near Canyon Village through Oct. 12–13, but rescuers say snow, freezing weather and seasonal closures could make safe access impossible after about Oct. 19.
What happened to Luna
Luna was left inside a Canyon Village cabin while her family visited Norris Geyser Basin, an area where dogs are prohibited. The family reportedly left a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door. When housekeeping entered, Luna bolted. Staff chased her for roughly two hours, according to reports, and the frightened dog ran farther into the surrounding woods.

Her family searched Yellowstone for a week before returning to California. The search continued afterward through reports from visitors, employees and surveillance cameras. Luna weighs approximately 18–20 pounds and was still wearing her purple collar when she was photographed on Oct. 9.
Where Luna has been seen
Recent sightings have concentrated around Canyon Village. Witnesses have reported seeing Luna near lodges and restaurants, suggesting that she remains in or repeatedly returns to developed areas rather than traveling continuously through remote backcountry. Those reports are incident-specific observations, not evidence of a broader Yellowstone wildlife or dog-survival statistic.

How she has survived
Katie Boucher, president of Norris Ark Training and Recovery Center, said Luna lived as a feral street dog during her first year. Boucher believes those early experiences helped the dog revert to survival behaviors after becoming lost. “She has street skills,” Boucher said, adding that Luna “knows how to survive.”
A dog living outdoors for more than a month still faces major hazards, including cold, dehydration, injury, vehicles, wildlife and accidental contact with people. Luna’s repeated appearances near buildings may indicate that she is seeking shelter or familiar human activity, but it does not make approaching her safe or predictable.
The rescue plan
A remotely triggered humane trap
Norris Ark received permission from the National Park Service to use a humane, remotely triggered Missy trap after identifying an area associated with Luna’s bedding. The setup allows trained rescuers to monitor the trap and trigger or manage capture without sending a crowd after the dog.
Why rescuers are not using food bait
Rescuers have avoided food bait because it could attract bears, wolves, coyotes or mountain lions to the trap site. Instead, the operation is relying on Luna’s known bedding area, scent and remote monitoring. That approach is slower than an improvised chase but reduces the chance of pushing her into thicker cover or creating a dangerous wildlife encounter.

The shrinking access window
Snow, freezing temperatures and seasonal road and campground closures were expected to end safe access around Oct. 19. On Oct. 12–13, Boucher said the team had roughly one week to work safely. “There’s no safe access after that point,” she said, describing the situation as involving “some really hard deadlines.” About 30 volunteers were reported to be involved.
What the public should do if they see Luna
- Do not chase her. Pursuit can drive a frightened dog deeper into cover and away from the trap area.
- Do not call to, approach or feed her. Sudden movement or an attempted grab could cause another flight response, while food may attract wildlife.
- Stay at a safe distance. Keep people and other dogs away, and do not enter closed or hazardous areas.
- Record the details. If it is safe, take a photo and note the exact time and location, along with Luna’s direction of travel and any visible collar.
- Report the sighting immediately. Contact Yellowstone National Park at 307-344-2643 or Norris Ark at 406-946-2825. A prompt, precise report is more useful than trying to organize a citizen capture.
Why a controlled operation matters
Luna’s case illustrates the difference between humane recovery and improvised capture in a national park. A public chase can scatter witnesses, stress the dog and increase exposure to wildlife. A monitored trap gives rescuers a known location, limits human contact and lets the team coordinate with park officials. The trade-off is time: the method depends on Luna returning to the identified area before weather and closures remove safe access.
Yellowstone National Park Lodges director of marketing and sales Todd Walton said the lodging operation was “as supportive as we possibly can be.” Any further sightings should still go through the park or Norris Ark numbers so information reaches the authorized team rather than producing uncoordinated activity around Canyon Village.
What remains unknown
As of the Oct. 12–13 reports, Luna had not been captured, and there was no confirmed public account of her daily food or water sources, injuries or exact den location. The 32-day survival period, weight estimates and volunteer count describe this individual incident; they are not independent scientific findings about how dogs generally survive in Yellowstone.
