Researchers at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh developed an experimental system that used cameras and machine vision to locate German cockroaches and aim a laser. It was a research prototype, not a consumer pest-control product—and its project lead advised against using it at home because lasers can cause serious eye damage.
How the cockroach-targeting prototype worked
The system combined a small computer with two cameras to identify cockroaches and direct a laser toward them, according to Futurism’s 2022 report. The underlying paper, “Selective neutralisation and deterring of cockroaches with laser automated by machine vision,” focused on German cockroaches (Blattella germanica) and described both neutralising and deterring them.
The researchers’ choice of a resilient insect was explained by project lead Ildar Rakhmatulin: “If you can kill them, you can kill any pests.” That was his rationale for selecting cockroaches as a test subject, not evidence that the system had been shown to work against every pest.
Why the reported laser power is unclear
The available accounts give different power figures. The indexed 2022 record for the paper reports a 100 mW demonstration; Futurism describes a 1,600 milliwatt laser. The sources do not explain whether the figures refer to different configurations or measurements, so neither should be treated as a definitive specification for the prototype.

Why the project lead discouraged home use
Futurism quotes Rakhmatulin saying, “It’s my opinion that it cannot be used for home applications.” He also warned that lasers can cause serious eye damage. The system should not be treated as a do-it-yourself household pest-control project: the reporting does not establish a safe home setup, and it offers no basis for recreating the device with consumer parts.
What the prototype does—and does not—show
Industrial and agricultural pest control were discussed as possible future applications, and the coverage presented the approach as a potential alternative to insecticides. Those are proposed uses, not demonstrated deployments. The available sources do not establish broad field effectiveness, commercial availability, or a measured environmental advantage.

They also provide no head-to-head results showing that the laser is more selective, safer for people or non-target animals, cheaper, faster, or more reliable than conventional pest control. Those questions would matter before judging it as a practical alternative.

This prototype is not an available household product, and its project lead advised against home use. For an active infestation, use established household pest-control methods appropriate to the situation or consult a licensed pest-control professional. Conventional bait stations are one distinct household option; they were not tested against the laser in this research.
