Croissant, an orange tabby, went from a neglect rescue to a high-rise fall, extensive orthopedic surgery, and finally a home with a dog named Minerva. The ASPCA told his story in a June 5, 2025 feature, and it is the most detailed public account of his care. It describes events that began in August 2024, and it has not been updated since publication, so Croissant’s current health and household situation are not known from the source.

How Croissant came into ASPCA care

According to the ASPCA, Croissant was one of 17 cats found in an apartment after their owner was hospitalized. The NYPD brought the cats to the ASPCA for urgent care. Croissant was emaciated, dehydrated, and had severe dental disease. Staff started him on a strict refeeding plan, which is a controlled way to restore nutrition in an animal that has gone hungry for a long time. Once he was stable, he had dental surgery.

The ASPCA’s account treats this first stage as the foundation for everything that followed: a cat could not safely recover from orthopedic surgery while still depleted and in pain from his teeth.

The timeline in brief

The published story covers a sequence of events over roughly a year. The table below lists each phase as the ASPCA reports it. The months are those given in the account, and the year for the adoption and return is inferred from the August 2024 starting point.

The injuries and the surgery

When Croissant returned to the ASPCA in October, the organization reports that he had dislocated, fractured wrists on both front limbs, a fractured right front leg, and a fractured left hip. The fall is described only as a high-rise fall. The account does not say how the fall happened, so readers should not assume any specific window or building defect was responsible.

The ASPCA reports that veterinary teams treated his wrists with carpal arthrodesis, a procedure that fuses the wrist joints, and his left hip with a femoral head ostectomy, which removes the head of the femur. Before surgery he wore forelimb splints and a hard e-collar. After the hip surgery he began physical therapy. These are the details of Croissant’s own care as the ASPCA describes it. They are not a treatment protocol for other cats, and the account does not give recovery timelines or outcome rates for these procedures.

From foster home to adoption

Kayla had met Croissant while volunteering at the ASPCA’s Adoption Center. She and her husband Ricardo fostered him during his recovery. Part of the reason for fostering rather than adopting right away was to introduce him slowly to Minerva, their dog. They formally adopted him in February.

Foster placement gave the couple a way to watch how Croissant handled daily life, from walking on his splinted or recovering legs to meeting a resident dog, before committing to him permanently. The account presents that gradual approach as a practical choice rather than a formula to copy.

Household adjustments that mattered

Keeping food away from the dog

Minerva kept eating Croissant’s food. Croissant also could not safely eat from a high location because of his injuries, so simply raising his bowl was not an option. The family’s solution was a special dish that unlocks after scanning Croissant’s microchip, so only he can access his meals. The ASPCA account does not name the manufacturer or model. It describes the feeder as a solution the family found for this specific household, not as a requirement for every multi-pet home.

Helping a shy cat adjust

At first Croissant hid under the office couch and was intimidated by Minerva. Kayla later reported that he became more confident exploring and began to prefer the couch as a spot of his own. Those changes came gradually, and the account credits a quiet, safe space as part of the process.

Where Croissant stood when the story was published

At the time of the ASPCA’s story, Croissant no longer needed pain medication and moved around without difficulty. His front legs remained visibly stiff after wrist surgery. He and Minerva sometimes stayed near each other but were not yet close companions. The story does not report any later update, so his condition and household circumstances after June 2025 are not known.

What adopters can take from this case

ASPCA staff and the adopter both emphasize patience. Adoption Veterinary Assistant Sydney Lu said that cats with trauma or pain often need a long time to trust again, and that an adopter needs to be patient enough to earn that trust, provide a safe space, and love the cat as they are. Lu described Croissant as a special case, noting that few cats are as trusting under similar circumstances.

Kayla offered two practical recommendations. The first is to consider pet insurance as a precaution. The second is to make sure windows have secure screens. These are her recommendations for pet owners in general. The account does not name an insurer or screen product, and it does not show that screens would have prevented Croissant’s fall.

Kayla’s broader message is that a disability or medical condition often sounds more daunting than it is in practice. In her words: “Some disabilities or medical conditions might sound intimidating, but they can often be managed much more easily than you think. These cats can live happy, loving, comfortable lives, and they deserve to be given that chance.”

The ASPCA also said its Adopt a Shelter Cat Month effort that summer aimed to help more than 300 cats and kittens find homes. That is a campaign goal stated in the 2025 story, not a result the article reports.

What this story does not establish

  • It is a human-interest account, not a clinical record. The medical details are the ASPCA’s description of Croissant’s care and have not been independently verified.
  • It does not provide costs, timelines for other cats, or success rates for adopting cats with injuries or special needs.
  • It does not establish the cause of Croissant’s fall.
  • It does not report anything about Croissant’s health or household after June 2025.
