Dogs can make an expression that looks remarkably like a smile, and Staffordshire Bull Terriers are especially memorable when they do it. The closest documented match to this headline is Stella, a Staffy featured in a roughly 13-second video described by PetHelpful on October 7, 2024. Her owner asks her to smile, and the dog opens her mouth, draws back her lips and shows her teeth.
That face is real, but it does not prove a human-style smile or one definite emotion. A relaxed mouth can accompany pleasure, anticipation or a learned trick; the dog’s eyes, ears, posture, tail, sounds and choice to remain nearby provide the more reliable context.

Can dogs really smile?
Dogs can produce a facial expression people interpret as a smile. PetHelpful, reproducing an explanation from Purina, says dogs can make their faces appear to smile by opening the mouth and pulling the lips back, often when relaxed. Some dogs also make the expression after seeing a person smile.
That description concerns appearance, not a claim that dogs experience or communicate happiness exactly as humans do. Read the whole dog before interpreting the mouth.

What to look for besides the mouth
- Soft eyes and a loose, relaxed face rather than a fixed stare.
- Natural ears and a relaxed body, not rigid muscles or a crouched posture.
- A loose, comfortable tail movement rather than frantic or tucked movement.
- Willingness to stay, approach or continue the interaction.
- No repeated lip-licking, yawning, turning away, freezing, growling or attempts to leave.
An open mouth with visible teeth can also occur during stress, conflict or defensive behavior. A photograph freezes one instant, so the surrounding interaction matters more than the grin alone.
Why does a Staffy grin when someone asks?
Some Staffies have a naturally expressive face; others learn that a particular word or gesture earns attention or food. Stella’s clip is presented as a requested “smile,” while Herbert’s widely reported rescue video shows a clearly motivated behavior.

PetHelpful described a video of Stella, a Staffordshire Bull Terrier, smiling after her owner asked her to. The report says the approximately 13-second post attracted more than 2,600 comments. That account is best treated as a light description of a dog performing an expressive behavior, not proof that every Staffy understands smiling as a human does.

Herbert’s “Say cheese” grin
In 2016, CBS News reported that five-month-old American Staffordshire Terrier Herbert produced a forced-looking grin when his foster mother said “Say cheese.” Cheese was held up to motivate him. Colleen Toole of PAWS Chicago said, “It wasn’t something that he came to us being able to do.”
ABC News reported that Herbert had been timid and under-socialized after rescue from Chicago Animal Care and Control. PAWS Chicago’s Sarah McDonald said, “The best thing about the video is seeing Herbert come out of his shell.” His expression mattered because it showed growing confidence in foster care, not simply because it was amusing.
Which Staffy grin stories are documented?
| Dog | What was reported | Audience figure reported by the source |
|---|---|---|
| Stella, 2024 | Staffordshire Bull Terrier asked to smile in a short video. | More than 2,600 comments, according to PetHelpful. |
| Herbert, 2016 | American Staffordshire Terrier foster dog grinned after “Say cheese,” with cheese used as motivation. | CBS News reported 14 million views and more than 412,000 shares; ABC News reported a separate January 13, 2016 snapshot of more than 12.5 million views, more than 350,000 shares and nearly 200,000 likes. |
| Riley, 2025 | Staffordshire Bull Terrier was filmed while a cat groomed him; the report emphasized his grin, wagging tail and affiliative interaction. | Woopets reported 21.7 million TikTok views for the May 18, 2025 post. |
| Sybil, formerly Lily, 2020 | A rescue Staffy’s large smile helped attract adoption interest before she was adopted by Frankie Murphy’s family. | Shareably reported the adoption story; no comparable view total was stated. |
The view counts are platform- and date-sensitive, and the CBS and ABC figures are different snapshots. They should not be added together or treated as evidence that dogs smile in a human sense.

Is a trained “smile” different from a happy expression?
Yes. A trained cue is a behavior shaped by repetition and reward; a spontaneous relaxed face is an expression observed in context. A dog may perform a mouth movement for a treat without that movement revealing a single emotional state.
How positive-reinforcement training is described
PetHelpful, citing Vet Explains Pets, describes pairing a cue word with a gradual lip lift and rewarding the response. This is a training anecdote, not a universal instruction for every dog. Keep sessions brief, use a small reward such as an ordinary dog training treat, and stop immediately if the dog resists, stiffens, turns away or leaves.
Never pull a dog’s lips into position for a photograph. If the behavior requires restraint, repeated prompting or visible discomfort, the picture is not worth the stress.

What do these viral grins have to do with rescue?
Herbert’s story shows why the welfare context belongs beside the meme. He was recovering from illness, learning social skills and living in foster care. Toole said she believed his smile would help him find an adopter, but the larger goal was a permanent, suitable home.
Likewise, Sybil’s reported adoption interest came from a rescue dog being seen as an individual, not merely as a novelty. A grin can draw attention, but adopters still need to consider temperament, exercise, training, health and the dog’s ability to feel safe.

How should you respond when your dog appears to smile?
- Observe the entire body before labeling the expression happy.
- Allow the dog to choose whether to approach and continue.
- Reward calm, willing behavior rather than forcing a toothy pose.
- End the interaction if the dog turns away, freezes, stiffens or leaves.
- For persistent fear, pain or unusual behavior, ask a veterinarian or qualified behavior professional for advice.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do dogs smile when they are happy?
Sometimes a relaxed, open-mouthed expression appears during pleasant interactions, but the mouth alone cannot identify an emotion. Loose posture, soft eyes and a voluntary decision to stay provide stronger context.
Why does my Staffy show its teeth?
A Staffy may show teeth during a relaxed learned behavior, excitement, play or stress. Check the rest of the body and the situation; a rigid posture, hard stare or attempt to retreat calls for space rather than encouragement.
Can I teach my dog to smile on command?
Some dogs can learn a lip-lift cue with gradual, reward-based training. It should remain optional, brief and stress-free, and it should never involve physically pulling the lips.
Are Staffordshire Bull Terriers good family dogs?
The Royal Kennel Club describes the breed as intelligent and affectionate, especially with children, but an individual dog’s temperament and socialization still determine suitability. Prospective owners should also plan for daily exercise, training and recommended health screening.
