Although she had learned to scoot by pulling herself with her front legs, the sanctuary’s profile says her back later healed and veterinarians found no physical reason she could not stand and walk. She still often chose to scoot—and became a social leader among the pigs at Marshall’s Piggy Paradise.
How Petunia came to Best Friends
Petunia’s early life is partly unknown. According to Sarah Thornton’s Best Friends Animal Society profile, her person moved away without notice and left her outside an empty home. A horse named Willie was there too. A landlord found both animals, and they went to Best Friends for care.
The profile describes Petunia as having a spinal injury when she was young and seemingly untreated nerve damage. With her back legs not helping her move, she learned to pull herself forward using her front legs. The account does not establish a precise diagnosis or explain exactly when or how the injury happened.
Why Petunia kept scooting
The Best Friends profile says Petunia’s back later healed, and veterinarians found no physical reason she could not stand and walk. Even so, she continued to scoot much of the time. The article presents this as Petunia’s way of getting around, not as evidence that she needed a mobility aid.

- Lifelike plush (Safe, soft and smooth)
Her care also involved a decision about spaying. The veterinarians were uncomfortable with the procedure because of concerns about positioning her for surgery and keeping the incision clean where her body met the ground. The profile says the other pigs in her group were spayed or neutered; it does not offer general veterinary advice about pig surgery.
Life with the pigs at Marshall’s Piggy Paradise
Petunia joined a group of pigs at Marshall’s Piggy Paradise. Caregiver Rosalie Wind described her as a social leader who preferred a peaceful group: “She’s a really good boss and just wants harmony in her group.”
