Before adopting a cat, make sure the cat’s needs suit your household, understand what the adoption fee includes, and prepare a calm, safe place to settle in. You’ll also want basic supplies, a plan for veterinary care, and a realistic budget for ongoing needs. Shelters and rescues set their own requirements, so ask about the individual cat and the organization’s process before you commit.

1. Choose a cat whose needs fit your household

Look beyond appearance. Ask the shelter or rescue what it knows about the cat’s temperament, history, health, energy level, and care needs. Consider how those details may fit with children, resident pets, your schedule, and your housing situation. The ASPCA notes that adoption profiles may describe personality and individual needs, and that its staff can help assess a potential match (ASPCA adoption guidance).

A profile is useful information, not a guarantee of how a cat will behave after moving. Ask what the organization has observed and what support it can offer if the cat needs time or has difficulty adjusting.

2. Find out how the adoption process works and what the fee covers

Each shelter or rescue sets its own application process, requirements, and fees. Ask what the fee includes and request the cat’s available medical records. In particular, clarify which veterinary care has already been provided and whether any follow-up is recommended. Adoption fees may help cover care such as veterinary treatment, spay/neuter, vaccinations, and food, but inclusions vary by organization (ASPCA adoption guidance).

3. Prepare a quiet home base and secure hazards

Before the cat arrives, set up a quiet room or area with food, water, a litter box, and a place to rest. A smaller, calm starting space gives the cat a chance to explore gradually rather than having to navigate the whole home at once.

Check the area and the rest of your home for hazards. Secure electrical cords, windows, and doors; put cleaning products and medications away; and make sure cabinets containing dangerous items cannot be opened. Check houseplants for toxicity and move unsafe plants out of the cat’s reach. The ASPCA’s plant guidance can help you identify plants that may pose a risk.

  • Food, a food dish, and a water bowl
  • A litter box and litter
  • A carrier
  • A scratching post or pad and interactive toys
  • A brush and comb
  • A safety collar and ID tag
  • A bed or box with warm bedding

A secure carrier is especially important for transport. The ASPCA’s New York City adoption center requires adopters to bring one for cats adopted there; that requirement is specific to that center, not a universal adoption rule (ASPCA NYC adoption guidance). Check with your own shelter or rescue about its pickup instructions.

5. Give your cat time and space to settle

A move can be stressful, and adjustment takes different amounts of time for different cats. The ASPCA’s “3-3-3” guideline describes the first days as a potentially stressful period, the following weeks as a time of settling in, and longer adjustment after that. Treat it as a broad framework rather than a timetable or promise.

Keep a predictable routine, speak and move calmly, and let the cat approach when ready. Do not force contact with you, visitors, children, or resident pets. The ASPCA puts it plainly: “Some pets adjust to a new environment quickly and confidently. Others may need more time to feel comfortable” (ASPCA adoption guidance).

6. Arrange veterinary care and ask questions specific to your cat

Establish a relationship with a nearby veterinarian shortly after adoption. Bring the medical records you received and ask what care is appropriate given the cat’s age, health, and history. Diet, vaccinations, preventive care, and the timing of spay/neuter follow-up are topics to confirm with the veterinarian rather than assume from a general checklist. The ASPCA recommends regular veterinary examinations; your veterinarian can advise on the schedule for this cat (ASPCA cat-care guidance).

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ask the shelter or rescue about any symptoms or ongoing care needs it has observed, and tell the veterinarian about them. Do not give a cat medication unless a veterinarian has prescribed or specifically recommended it.

7. Budget for routine and unexpected care

Plan for recurring expenses such as food, litter, routine veterinary care, and preventive medication, as well as unexpected medical needs. The ASPCA’s cost page labels its figures a “2021 UPDATE” and estimates annual cat costs at $1,149 and first-year costs at $1,904. Those are historical ASPCA estimates—not current quotes, a national average, or a guaranteed budget. The page’s categories include food, routine medical costs, preventive medication, litter, toys, treats, and insurance (ASPCA cost guidance).

Actual costs depend on where you live and the cat’s individual needs. If you consider pet insurance as one way to plan for veterinary expenses, read current policy documents carefully: coverage, exclusions, waiting periods, reimbursement, and price differ. The ASPCA notes that waiting periods and pre-existing-condition exclusions can matter (ASPCA adoption guidance).

8. Plan for identification and long-term welfare

An ID tag or implanted microchip can help reunite a lost cat with its owner. Ask the shelter or rescue whether the cat is already microchipped, how to update the registration if needed, and what local identification or registration rules apply. The ASPCA includes a collar and ID tag among basic supplies and discusses microchips as an identification option (ASPCA cat-care guidance).

Think beyond the first weeks, too. The ASPCA’s general guidance recommends keeping cats indoors and describes risks associated with outdoor access. Discuss the cat’s circumstances and safe enrichment options with your veterinarian; no single setup replaces an assessment of the individual cat and home.
