Advantage II is a monthly topical flea treatment for cats, containing imidacloprid and pyriproxyfen. The correct dose is the entire tube sized for your cat’s current weight, applied once to the skin at the base of the skull. Each tube is labeled for a specific weight range, so the first step is to weigh the cat and match the package to that weight, not to estimate a dose or split a tube. The main safety signs to watch for are skin irritation at the application site and gastrointestinal upset, with lethargy also listed. Because the directions differ by tube, the label on the package in your hand is the authority for age, drying and retreatment details.
What Advantage II is and who it is for
Advantage II is sold as a spot-on (topical) flea product for cats. It contains 9.10% imidacloprid and 0.46% pyriproxyfen, according to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency-accepted kitten label dated April 23, 2025. Imidacloprid targets adult fleas, and pyriproxyfen interrupts flea development, which is why the product is positioned as a monthly control product rather than a single-use fix. The manufacturer, Elanco Animal Health, describes it for use in cats only.
Choosing the right tube by weight and age
The product is made in three weight presentations. Choose the tube that matches the cat’s current weight, and re-check when the cat grows or loses weight.
| Presentation | Labeled weight | Labeled minimum age | EPA label date cited |
|---|---|---|---|
| Kitten | 2 to 5 lb | 8 weeks and older | April 23, 2025 |
| Small cat | 5 to 9 lb | Read on the package; the age wording for this tube is not restated here | Not stated in the current label materials reviewed; an older EPA label for this presentation exists |
| Large cat | Over 9 lb | 8 weeks and older | October 10, 2024 |
The weight ranges come from the manufacturer’s U.S. product page. The age floor for the small-cat tube should be confirmed on its carton, because the kitten and large-cat labels are the ones with confirmed wording here. A cat that falls at the edge of a range should be weighed on a reliable scale, and a veterinarian can help if the cat is close to a boundary.

How to apply Advantage II, step by step
- Weigh the cat and select the matching tube. Both the kitten and large-cat labels direct owners to weigh the cat before applying the product.
- Keep the cat dry before application. Do not bathe the cat beforehand; the label asks that the cat stay dry before application and for 24 hours after it.
- Part the hair at the base of the skull. Work the hair apart until the skin is visible.
- Squeeze the entire contents of the tube directly onto the skin. Use one tube per treatment. The label says not to apply more than one tube per treatment, and tubes should never be split between cats.
- Keep contact away until the product dries. Keep children and other pets away from the treated area, and keep the cat from grooming the spot or being groomed by another cat in the household until it is dry.
- Keep the product out of the cat’s mouth. The label is for external use only.
When it starts working and how long it lasts
- Flea kill begins within 12 hours. This is the manufacturer’s description of onset, not a laboratory timing from the label.
- Waterproof after 24 hours. Elanco states the product is waterproof after 24 hours, so a bath or swim before that point can reduce its effect.
- Monthly interval under normal conditions. The label describes the product as effective for 30 days under normal conditions. The labels reviewed do not define which conditions change that interval, so ask a veterinarian if the cat is bathed often or spends a lot of time in flea-heavy areas.
Safety precautions before you use it
- Use the product on cats only. Elanco explicitly says not to use its cat product on dogs.
- Do not split a tube between cats, and do not use a larger or smaller tube than the one matched to the cat’s weight.
- Consult a veterinarian before use on debilitated, aged, pregnant or nursing cats, or on any cat taking medication. This comes directly from the EPA-accepted kitten label.
- Do not let the cat ingest the product, and keep it away from the cat’s eyes and mouth during application.
Side effects and when to call a veterinarian
The label’s side-effects statement reads: “Monitor your cat after application. Side effects may include signs of skin irritation such as redness, scratching, or other signs of discomfort. Gastrointestinal signs such as hypersalivation, vomiting or diarrhea have also been reported. If these or other side effects (such as lethargy) occur, consult your veterinarian or call 888-545-5973.”
The kitten label adds a broader caution: “Individual sensitivities may occur after using ANY pesticide product for cats.” Labels and manufacturer materials reviewed for this article do not report how often any of these effects happen, so no frequency is given here. Treat any listed sign as a reason to contact a veterinarian rather than waiting to see if it passes, and call sooner if signs persist or worsen.

Retreatment and heavy flea infestations
Retreatment language differs between presentations, so do not borrow it from another package. The kitten label says not to retreat more often than every 14 days, and not to exceed two bi-weekly treatments before returning to a monthly schedule. The large-cat label uses different retreatment wording. If fleas persist or the infestation is severe, a veterinarian can confirm whether a different plan is appropriate for that cat, rather than repeating doses on your own schedule.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Using a dog product on a cat, or a cat product on a dog.
- Applying a tube sized for a lighter or heavier cat because it is on hand.
- Bathing or letting the cat get wet before the 24-hour drying window closes.
- Assuming the monthly interval applies after the cat has been bathed or exposed to heavy flea pressure, without asking a veterinarian.
